It’s the busiest time of the year for Tennessee athletics. There’s even some football to whet your gridiron appetite.

The Vols begin spring football practices March 21, and the DISH Orange & White Game is April 22 at Neyland Stadium. By then, much will have happened in Big Orange Nation.

5. Tire Plant Breaks Ground Amid Concerns Over Local Contracts -

CLINTON, Miss. (AP) – Mississippi and Continental AG leaders Thursday celebrated the start of construction of the German company's $1.45 billion tire plant west of Jackson.

But during the ceremonial groundbreaking, U.S. Rep. Bennie Thompson added his voice to those who want local and minority-owned businesses to get as much of the work involved in the mammoth construction project as possible.

Brad Carmony has been named Newcomer of the Year in the 2006 MPACT Maker Awards. The award recognizes individuals who have lived in Memphis for a short time, but who have made significant contributions to the community. Carmony is the public relations manager at inferno. He also serves on the regional advisory board of the Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis Association of Tennessee, the Exchange Club Family Center's Gala Committee and as a member of the Shelby County Humane Society's Pet Set organization.

Ken Newberry has been named the president and chief executive officer of LG&W Federal Credit Union, which serves immediate family members, employees and retired employees of Memphis Light, Gas & Water Division. Brad V. Smith, president of Cecil Smith Insurance Agency in Germantown, was elected president of Insurors of Tennessee. Smith has served on the association's board of directors and executive committee for 12 years. He won the group's Chairman of the Year award in 2004 and Insuror of the Year award in 1992.
