The Mississippi River at Memphis should reach flood stage at any moment. As Last Word was going up online Wednesday evening the National Weather Service at Memphis put the river level here at 33.52 feet. Flood stage at Memphis is 34 feet. The river is forecast to crest some time next week at 38 feet, four feet over flood stage. Keep in mind that in April 2011, the river at Memphis crested 10 feet higher, at 48 feet on the Memphis river gauge – which turned to be the one on the support beams of the bridge over Beale Street at Riverside Drive. That was the second highest river level at Memphis ever recorded.

The Achievement School District is considering adding up to 12 Memphis schools to the state-run school district that is now in its third school year.

Leaders of the school district released Wednesday, Oct. 15, the list of schools being considered for the 2015-2016 school year. The schools are taken from the bottom 5 percent of schools statewide in terms of student achievement test results.

The union representing Memphis Light, Gas and Water Division employees, including meter readers, plans to take its problems with Smart Meters to the road – the side of the road.

Leaders of International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 1288 said Monday, July 8, they intend to put up billboards warning the public of what they say are the dangers of the new meters the utility plans to seek city funding for later this year.

MORRISTOWN, Tenn. (AP) – Gov. Bill Haslam will administer the oath of office Tuesday to the state's newest Court of Appeals judge, Thomas R. Frierson II.

Tennessee Supreme Court Justice Gary R. Wade will also be at the ceremony in Morristown.

WASHINGTON (AP) – The government can require airlines to show consumers a total ticket price that includes taxes and fees in print and online ads, the U.S. Court of Appeals said Tuesday, rejecting an industry challenge to a series of consumer protection regulations.

The field for Millington mayor in that city’s Aug. 2 nonpartisan general election is three candidates following last week’s filing deadline.

MADISON, Wis. (AP) – Patients cannot sue the makers of potentially unsafe medical devices approved for sale by federal regulators, the Wisconsin Supreme Court ruled Tuesday.

The court ruled against a Wisconsin man who had surgery to remove a defibrillator after the manufacturer, Medtronic Inc., warned its battery had a chance of failing. The ruling is a victory for Minneapolis-based Medtronic and other manufacturers who want to limit product liability. Medtronic’s Spinal and Biologics Business is based in Memphis.
