The Orpheum Theatre Group and Memphis arts community will host the second annual Midsouth Arts Against Hunger food drive benefiting Mid-South Food Bank through Wednesday, Dec. 20. Patrons who donate at least one nonperishable item will receive a voucher for free admission to see a screening of “Miracle on 34th Street” Wednesday at 7 p.m. at the Orpheum, 203 S. Main St. Donations will be collected at the Orpheum box office and Halloran Centre lobby Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., through the day of the event; tickets for the screening also are available for $5 cash only at the Orpheum box office. Ballet Memphis will perform “The Nutcracker” Friday through Sunday, Dec. 15-17, at The Orpheum Theatre, 203 S. Main St. The production features more than 100 professional dancers, children, musicians and vocalists. Tickets start at $10. Visit balletmemphis.org.

3. Archer-Malmo Starts 2015 with Batch of Hires -

Memphis-based advertising agency archer-malmo has added 10 new hires to its ranks.

They include Samantha Blake and Dianna Davis on the account service team; Ben Colar, Megan Schmitt and Barry Wolverton on the creative side; Jeff Janovetz, Madeline Otto and Jonah Westbrook to digital; Cheryl Mathis to accounting; and Lisa Hawkins to media.

5. Book Blitz -

Literacy Mid-South is spending part of this month literally surrounded by books.

The nonprofit, which is promoting the national Read Across America initiative in March, is in the process of collecting some 3,000 books (valued at $48,000) to give away. And in the meantime, those books will need to be somehow stored in the organization’s 1,300-square-foot office.

6. Literacy Mid-South Gears Up for Busy March -

Literacy Mid-South is gearing up for a whirlwind of activity next month.

The national Read Across America event happens in March, and Literacy Mid-South will have special events, book giveaways, author visits and more throughout the month. The literacy organization also will be hosting a month-long “virtual book club” on social media via Facebook, Instagram and Twitter.
