16. Council Takes Up Beale’s Next Act -

Memphis City Council members are likely to have some questions Tuesday, Jan. 20, about the still tentative settlement of the last part of the court fight for control of Beale Street.

The tentative terms of the settlement between the city of Memphis and the Beale Street Development Corp. leaked last week and include a share of revenues from the operation of the entertainment district for the BSDC that would otherwise go to the city, which owns the property between Second and Fourth streets.

NEW YORK (AP) – Independent booksellers may never regain the stature of the pre-digital, pre-superstore era, but their presence continues to grow.

The American Booksellers Association, the independents' trade group, told The Associated Press on Tuesday that core membership has increased to 1,664, up from 1,632 last year and more than 200 higher since 2009. It's the fifth straight increase for an organization that was losing members for decades and seemed in danger of permanent shrinkage under the combined pressures of Amazon.com, Barnes & Noble Inc. and Borders, discount clubs and a weak economy.

The Exchange Club Family Center has been named the recipient of the United Way G. Bradley Wanzer Jr. Award For Excellence. The award includes a $25,000 grant, which the Center will use to support its services and programs that assist those impacted by family violence and abuse.

23. Kroger Midtown Expansion Gets Mixed Reaction -

While the expansion of Kroger’s Midtown store is still in the early stages, the effects are apparent in the surrounding community.

Kroger Delta Division earlier this month bought the Belvedere Apartments for $2.6 million. It then purchased the Kroger store on Union Avenue that it was leasing from Art Seessels’ family, as well as two adjacent parcels for a combined $4.6 million, bringing Kroger’s ownership of property in the area from South Idlewild Street to LeMaster Street along Union.

Lucia Heros walks down the hall of her home each morning to her office with its windows overlooking a garden. She carries a steaming cup of black coffee.

On an office shelf is a glass award with blue stars. In September the coffee business she owns with her two brothers, Cafe Las Flores, won the Memphis Latino Leadership Award, small business category, given by the Memphis chapter of the National Hispanic Professional Organization.

The Memphis City Council isn’t finished making difficult decisions about city finances.

The recommendations approved by the council’s budget committee this week set the framework for votes at the council’s June 8 session. Those votes will get the city a budget for the fiscal year that begins July 1.

Yet after selling more than 61 million albums in the U.S. and having a decade-long attraction open at Disney theme parks, the "King of Pop" died Thursday at age 50 reportedly awash in about $400 million in debt, on the cusp of a final comeback after well over a decade of scandal.

The Exchange Club Family Center recently completed a $1.2 million facelift that will allow it to serve clients better, furthering its mission of ending the cycle of domestic violence.

With the additional space, interns and counselors will better be able to help children and families, said executive director Barbara King.

MEMPHIS (AP) - The National Civil Rights Museum, built around the motel where the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated in 1968, is drawing criticism that its governing board is too white and too closely tied to big business to watch over such an important piece of black history.

Dr. Fred Johnson has been appointed to the Shelby County Board of Education. Johnson also is a Memphis Area Teachers' Credit Union (MATCU) board member. Johnson will fill the vacancy left by Wyatt Bunker, who left the board to serve on the County Commission. Johnson has served as a MATCU board member since 1996.
