Tigers Face South Alabama in Tennis Friday as NCAA Tournament Begins -

Getting to the NCAA Tournament has become no big deal for the University of Memphis tennis squad. Coach Paul Goebel’s Tigers (18-5) will open tournament play for the sixth time in seven years Friday in Starkville, Mississippi, with a first-round match against South Alabama (14-9). That kind of consistency is what new Tigers basketball coach Penny Hardaway and his squad can only dream about, for now.

Right now, the best thing that can be said about the Tennessee Titans is they play in the AFC South, where someone’s mediocrity will be rewarded with a playoff berth come Dec. 31.
After the past two weeks – a 57-14 shellacking at Houston followed by an abysmal offensive performance in Sunday’s 16-10 loss in Miami – that’s about all the Titans have to hang their hat on in what began as a promising season with strong playoff aspirations.

Granted, there are many other factors in play that will determine the success, failure or return to mediocrity of the Titans in 2017. Has the defensive backfield been successfully retooled? Can the offensive line remain one of the best in the NFL? Will the additions at wide receiver pay the expected dividends?

The University of Memphis men’s tennis team has earned its 13th Intercollegiate Tennis Association All-Academic Team honor for having a team GPA of 3.2 or higher. Memphis also had four players honored as ITA Scholar-Athletes for posting a GPA of 3.5 or higher during the past academic year.

Moorman Named Chief Scientist at Ducks Unlimited -

Tom Moorman has been named chief scientist of Memphis-based Ducks Unlimited, the world’s largest nonprofit dedicated to conserving North American waterfowl habitats. Moorman, who will take over from retiring chief scientist Scott Yaich on March 1, has worked for DU for more than 25 years, most recently serving as head of its 13-state Southern Region.
As chief scientist, Moorman will serve as DU’s leader on waterfowl and habitat science, provide vision and direction in addressing DU’s science needs and ensure it maintains its standing and credibility as a top-notch science-based organization.

The Public Relations Society of America's Memphis chapter has named Memphis City Schools superintendent Carol Johnson as its Communicator of the Year for 2005. Johnson accepted the honor at the organization's January chapter meeting. PRSA presents the award annually to a respected member of the community who invests time or talent in communicating a specific message to public audiences. Johnson replaced superintendent Johnnie Watson after his retirement in 2003. She had served as superintendent of Minneapolis Public Schools since 1997.
