Tennessee Gov. Bill Haslam has appointed eight business leaders, including a former University of Memphis interim president and the CEO of J.C. Penney Co., to the newly formed governing board of the University of Memphis.

The judgments began early for the new Memphis City Council, which met for the first time Tuesday, Jan. 5, at City Hall.

State Sen. Lee Harris, on hand to be honored as a former city council member, called the group the “Kumbaya Council,” as it approved 13 appointees by Mayor Jim Strickland, 11 of them with unanimous votes.

6. McKinney Named Branch Manager at Waddell & Reed -

Mack McKinney has been promoted at Waddell & Reed to district branch manager for the Memphis area. McKinney has been with the financial advisory firm for five years, holding management positions for four of those years.
McKinney works to develop field leaders and help financial advisers leverage their strengths and experiences to build successful practices. He serves as mentor to both new and seasoned financial advisers and says he’s committed to building an office that demonstrates the collective passion shared for clients and the community.

8. Wonderstone Worth Wait -

Since writing about magician David Kwong last November, I’ve been waiting for “The Incredible Burt Wonderstone” to come out. David’s listed as one of the film’s two magic consultants at IMDB, though I saw three names in the film’s credits. I enjoyed the film on the day it was released, and now I’m watching the reviews roll in on Rotten Tomatoes.

WASHINGTON (AP) – It could be quite a while yet before the Federal Reserve starts raising the interest rates it's kept at record lows for three years.

Maybe not before 2014.

That's the thinking of many analysts as the Fed prepares this week to provide more explicit clues about how long short-term rates will likely stay near zero.
