JACKSON, Miss. (AP) – Mississippi's economy is growing gradually but still lags behind the pace of the U.S. economy overall, an expert told state lawmakers Thursday.

State economist Darrin Webb said during a briefing at the Capitol that the state and nation have a "boring kind of economy" right now, with slow job growth and shaky consumer confidence.

NEW YORK (AP) – Cancer has overtaken heart disease as the No. 1 killer among Hispanics in the U.S., and the rest of the country may be only a few years behind.

The change is not exactly cause for alarm. Death rates for both cancer and heart disease have been dropping for Hispanics and everyone else. It's just that heart disease deaths have fallen faster, largely because of improved treatment and prevention, including the development of cholesterol-lowering drugs.

NEW YORK (AP) – Within just over a week, Netflix and Hulu are both debuting their first stabs at original scripted programming.

The shows amount to a milestone in Internet television, an early sign of the leveling between broadcasting and streaming. Programming options between TV and the Web are increasingly separated by little more than the "video source" button on your remote.

DETROIT (AP) – General Motors is offering free loaner cars to Chevrolet Volt owners worried about the vehicles catching fire.

The move comes after the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration announced Friday that the government is investigating fires involving the Volt's lithium-ion batteries.

61. Medical Facilities Feather Their Nest in Germantown -

Three years ago, Greg McGaw figured it would cost an outlandish amount to convert some of the now-vacant Wal-Mart property at 1280 S. Germantown Road into a medical space.

Wal-Mart abandoned the 16-acre site in 2003, leaving McGaw - principal of Landstone Medical Properties - and others to speculate that the land was a prime site for a medical user. That type of real estate also is something Germantown officials have been keen on attracting since the town is landlocked, very nearly built-out and has few opportunities available to expand its property tax base.
