3. I-240 Project Will Replace Four Bridges -

The Tennessee Department of Transportation will begin replacing a set of four 50-year-old bridges over Interstate 240 in East Memphis next month. The $54.1 million project will mean up to 12 weekends when the interstate is completely shut down from the I-40/I-240 split to the I-40/Tenn. 385 split.

4. Memfix 4 to Replace 4 Bridges with Interstate, Poplar Closures In July -

The Tennessee Department of Transportation will begin replacing as set of four 50-year old bridges over Interstate 240 in East Memphis next month in a $54.1 million project that will mean up to 12 weekends when the interstate is completely shut down from the I-40/I-240 split to the I-40/Tn 385 split.

5. Bartholomew Named St. Mary’s Athletic Director -

St. Mary’s Episcopal School has promoted John Bartholomew to athletic director. Bartholomew has been coaching lacrosse at St. Mary’s since 2014, and the following year, he joined the school full-time as assistant athletic director and lacrosse coordinator. He has been serving as St. Mary’s interim athletic director since last fall.

6. Last Word: Mud Island Changes, Zoo Parking and Capitol Hill Revolt On UT Board -

This could be your last chance to see the Mississippi River Museum at Mud Island River Park as it has been for about the last 30 years. The park on the southern half of Mud Island opens for the season Saturday. The museum will be open only through July 4 is what is billed as a “limited run” followed by a public engagement process for “reimagining how we tell the story of the Mississippi River in a 21st century way,” according to park general manager Trey Giuntini in a Thursday press release.

After more than a decade of preparation, The Lake District multiuse development in Lakeland is seeing some concrete progress. An Arkansas-based fitness boutique is building out its first Memphis location, with plans to open early next year.

1975: The Peabody Hotel is sold out of receivership at auction for $400,000 – with another $140,000 for its belongings – to secret bidders through attorney Raymond Shainberg. The only other bid is $100,000 from Robert “Prince Mongo” Hodges.
Shainberg’s clients are father and son Philip and Jack Belz, who undertake a $20 million renovation and reopen the hotel in 1981. Years later, Jack Belz says he and his family expected more competition in the bidding and may have intended to quickly sell the hotel again but instead undertook the renovation.

27. Last Word: Alexander and Corker Differ, Instant Runoff React and Kroger On Hold -

Tennessee’s two U.S. Senators split their votes Tuesday in Washington on the vote that followed the vote to open debate on a repeal and replacement of Obamacare. Lamar Alexander and Bob Corker both voted yes on the debate motion. But then Corker was one of the nine Republican Senate votes that killed the Obamacare replacement plan known as BCRA, while Alexander voted for it.

28. Haslam Touts IMPROVE Act At Interchange Opening -

It looked like another day at the Interstate 40-240 interchange Wednesday, July 19, from the roof of a building by the state’s tallest interchange.

Inside the building tucked away in a residential area off White Station Road, a bank of video monitors on the wall of the local offices of the Tennessee Department of Transportation showed the same – cars and trucks moving smoothly there and elsewhere on the county’s interstate system.

30. How Did Vols Not Win More With This Talent? -

One check of the 2017 NFL Draft shows why Tennessee was the favorite to win the SEC East Division last fall.

UT had six players drafted in the first four rounds, the most for the program since 2002, breaking a two-year drought with no players. The six Vols drafted tied for the most since 2010 and 2007. Eight Vols were drafted in 2003 and 10 drafted in 2002.

31. Last Word: Tri-State Inks Move to Midtown, Main and Gayoso and 'Wise Trek' -

The open land across Union Avenue from AutoZone Park remains just that as some of it has changed hands again. Vision Hospitality buying the land that had been the location of the Greyhound bus station at Union and Hernando. Vision Memphis LLC sold to Vision Hospitality of Knoxville for $4 million, according to a warrant deed we reviewed Monday.

44. Last Word: Cubits Anyone, The G-Word and The TV News Crime Block -

How long is a cubit? After a day in which many of you got about four to five inches of rain and more to come Thursday, it seems an appropriate and timely question.
And yes, there is a cubit conversion chart on line for converting that and other really old units of measurement no longer in use like the mina, drachma or the synodic month.
So the average cubit, which is supposed to be the length of a forearm, is 18 inches or a foot and a half. That’s 0.4572 of a meter, which might as well be an ancient unit of measurement.
Someone had to say it.
According to biblehub.com – I’m not making up websites – the book of Genesis sets God’s instructions to Noah as an arc with the dimensions of 300 cubits long, 50 cubits wide and 30 cubits tall. And it was to be made out of gopher wood and covered inside and out with pitch.
The New Living Translation and Holman Christian Standard Bibles convert that to an arc 450 feet long, 75 feet wide and 45 feet high.

46. Quince Road Walgreens Sells for $3.6 Million -

A Walgreens at 5121 Quince Road, at the corner of White Station Road, has sold for $3.6 million.

Florida-based Lease Fund I LLC sold the property to a conglomerate made up of four trusts and a limited partnership, according to a Feb. 17 warranty deed recently filed with the Shelby County Register’s Office.

47. East Memphis Medical Office Fetches $1.2 Million -

A medical office building at the corner of White Station Road and Poplar Avenue has sold for $1.2 million. In a warranty deed signed Feb, 29, Tennessee-based 5210 LLC sold the property at 5210 Poplar to Tennessee-based Banc3 Holdings Inc.

48. East Memphis Medical Office Sells for $1.2 Million -

49. Poplar Opens Up -

The prized retail stretch of Poplar Avenue between Perkins Road and Interstate 240 is shaking up in a way the area hasn’t seen in several decades. Within the next two years, more than 230,000 square feet will be made available in what has historically been a tight trade area.

Southwest Tennessee Community College is opening its new Whitehaven Center on Tuesday, Jan. 19. The building, which accommodates nearly 2,000 students at 1234 Finley Road off Elvis Presley Boulevard, is seeing new life following its run as a Kroger store that closed in 2011.

53. 4 Applicants Up for Beale Street Gig -

A Fortune 500 corporation, the Memphis-based company behind the Delta Fair, a Memphis real estate management firm with office experience, and a newly formed group of Memphians with experience in real estate, entertainment and restaurants as well as commercial development and financing. Those are the four companies that have applied to manage the Beale Street entertainment district.

55. iBank Tower Sells for $19.2 Million -

The iBank Tower, located at 5050 Poplar Ave., has sold for $19.2 million, and for the first time, the same owner controls both the iBank Tower and the nearby Clark Tower at 5100 Poplar Ave.

56. Craving Cooper-Young -

If a neighborhood can be said to possess whatever the real estate equivalent is of that new car smell – a sense that there’s something new here to enjoy, of possibilities, of happy things to come – Cooper-Young would seem to have that, in spades.

Downtown has the South Main Historic Arts District and the Main Street core. Midtown has Cooper-Young, Overton Square and the Broad Avenue Arts District, among others.

In East Memphis, defining a proper restaurant and entertainment district might seem to be more difficult, but in fact it’s existed all along on Brookhaven Circle. It’s just taken a few new restaurant openings to bring the neighborhood into full focus.

59. Clark Tower to Get $6 Million in Capital Improvements -

The venerable Clark Tower is getting an infusion of cash for capital improvements.

In-Rel Properties, which owns the East Memphis skyscraper, has executed an agreement with the building’s lender paving the way for a $6 million capital improvement project that will begin immediately.

60. Del-Nat Sells Warehouse, Newby’s Makes A Comeback -

Del-Nat Tire Co. has unloaded a 500,000-square-foot warehouse in Southwest Memphis.

Sunhill Holdings LLC acquired the warehouse at 2365 Texas Drive for $6 million from Del-Nat Realty.

Archie Willis III had just earned his master’s degree in business at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill when he returned to Memphis in 1981 to help his father, A.W. Willis Jr., redevelop the Adler Hotel Annex.

STORIES 90 YEARS IN THE MAKING. The other day, Willy Bearden and I visited with Norman Blackley in his kitchen. Willy and I are suckers for stories and that kitchen was chock-full.

Matter of fact, Norman built the kitchen. “Everything in here cost about 200 bucks,” he told us, “put it in myself. This was the garage. Needed a kitchen more than a garage.” He has other garages behind the house. Like the one that holds the 1978 Lincoln Town Car he restored. Or the 1965 Chrysler New Yorker. Or the 1920-something Jordan he’s working on now. His 1955 Chevy’s not back there. It’s in a museum. However, in another garage there’s a tank he built to float his 1927 Chris-Craft 14-footer. He was with his mother when she bought it in 1930 and he’s had it ever since. “Gotta keep it wet,” he explained, “the mahogany shouldn’t dry out.”

70. Park Avenue Professional Building Sells for $1.3M -

An affiliate of Memphis-based Belz Enterprises has sold an East Memphis office building for $1.3 million.

Belz Investco GP sold the Park Avenue Professional Building at 930 S. White Station Road, at the northeast corner of White Station and Park Avenue, to Mem1 RE LLC, according to an Oct. 31 warranty deed. The buyer is affiliated with Dallas-based real estate investment company Pro Domo LLC.

71. Station Inn: Music History Amid Gulch High-Rises -

J.T. Gray – who pioneered smokeless nightclubs before it became fashionable (and/or mandated) – is glad to see sparkling condo towers, office buildings, restaurants and the like sprouting around him. After all, these newcomers eventually might find themselves inside his time-out-of-mind blockhouse where Bill Monroe used to just drop by and pick.

An affiliate of Memphis-based Belz Enterprises has sold an East Memphis office building for $1.3 million.

Belz Investco GP sold the Park Avenue Professional Building at 930 S. White Station Road, at the northeast corner of White Station and Park Avenue, to Mem1 RE LLC, according to an Oct. 31 warranty deed. The buyer is affiliated with Dallas-based real estate investment company Pro Domo LLC.

Rosemont Realty LLC is investing around $400,000 to update the 24-story i-bank Tower at 5050 Poplar Ave. The 275,634-square-foot building, built in 1967 by pioneering developer William B. Clark Sr. and formerly known as White Station Tower, includes the signature round top floor, which once housed a rotating restaurant.
