The Varsity Brands distribution building in the Bartlett Corporate Park has sold for $9.5 million. A trust comprised of Oparts Memphis LLC and KABR Real Estate Investment Partners LLC sold the property to Appling Road Memphis LLC in a Aug. 4 warranty deed.

Consumers are increasingly turning to technology and the convenience of smartphones to pay for goods and services or perform banking-related tasks.

That explains everything from the launch of Apple’s new ApplePay service to the formation of Memphis startup SynapsePay, a self-described early-stage financial network that has just completed a seed funding round.

17. Investment Group Buying Varsity Brands -

A private equity firm is in the process of leading an acquisition of Memphis-based Varsity Brands.

The latter is comprised of a portfolio of three school achievement brands – Herff Jones, BSN Sports and Varsity Spirit. Varsity Brands’ current leadership, under the terms of the proposed acquisition agreement, will get to both keep their current positions and join the investment group led by Charlesbank Capital Partners that’s buying the firm.

18. Archer-Malmo Hits Record-High Headcount -

In terms of its headcount, Memphis-based marketing communications agency archer-malmo is at a high-water mark.

The agency’s growth – in everything from its creative talent to its physical footprint and client roster – hasn’t slowed down this year. In the second quarter alone, for example, archer-malmo added seven new hires, bringing its employee roster to a record high of 160.

Skyline Exhibits MidSouth is expanding its presence at East Pointe Business Center.

The St. Paul, Minn.-based tradeshow exhibits company renewed its 9,958-square-foot lease at 3895 Vantech Drive, Suite 9, and expanded into an additional 3,524 square feet. The additional space will enable Skyline to assemble and store exhibits for clients.
