1. Redbirds Return to AutoZone Park for PCL Playoff Games 3-5 -

The Memphis Redbirds and Fresno Grizzlies (Astros) are tied 1-1 in their best-of-five Pacific Coast League Championship Series and Games 3 and 4, and 5, if necessary, will be played at AutoZone Park starting Friday night.

The Redbirds and KTG USA have teamed up to offer $1 tickets for all of the series games played in Memphis. The $1 Dugout and Field Box tickets can be purchased at www.memphisredbirds.com/playoffs and at the AutoZone Park Box Office.
 
The Redbirds are vying for their second-straight PCL championship. Game times are as follows: Friday (7:05 p.m.), Saturday (6:35 p.m.), and, if necessary, Sunday (5:05 p.m.).

The Redbirds won Game 1 in Fresno 10-4 and the Grizzlies bounced back to take Game 2 by a score of 10-1.

The Redbirds are seeking their fourth PCL title in franchise history after winning in 2000, 2009, and 2017. A second-straight league championship this weekend would also mark the first time a Memphis professional baseball team has won back-to-back titles since the Memphis Chickasaws in 1952-53.
 
Manager Stubby Clapp has won back-to-back PCL Manager of the Year awards. His clubs’ 174 regular-season wins are the most in a two-year span by a Memphis pro baseball team since the Chickasaws in 1933-34.

8. Newsmakers: Aug. 15, 2018 -

Joseph W. Smith, associate attorney at Rice, Amundsen & Caperton PLLC, has been selected as an associate member in the Leo S. Bearman Sr. American Inn of Court. Smith was nominated and voted by the Masters of the Inn. He began his legal career at Rice, Amundsen & Caperton as a runner during his undergraduate studies at the University of Memphis and continued as a law clerk while attending the U of M Cecil C. Humphreys School of Law. He joined the firm as an attorney in May 2016 and focuses his practice on all aspects of domestic relations, including divorce, custody, support and adoption.

9. MCA Closing On a Dozen Properties Near Park -

Memphis College of Art has either sold or accepted offers on all 12 of the properties it owns just south of Poplar Avenue and Overton Park where the school is headquartered.

The financially strapped college is disposing of its apartment buildings, single-family homes, office and studio/class space, and dormitories in preparation for closing by spring 2020.

A New York-based company has purchased a Whitehaven car wash for $3.1 million.

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Twin wildfires fueled by dry vegetation and hot, windy weather continued to grow Saturday in Northern California, destroying 55 homes and forcing thousands of residents to flee their neighborhoods.

15. Camp Aims to Build Confidence in Those Who Stutter -

The Orpheum Theatre is partnering with a New York-based nonprofit to bring a two-day camp to Memphis this fall for kids and teens who stutter. “Camp SAY Across the USA: Memphis” is part of a pilot program to extend the programming of the Stuttering Association for the Young (SAY), and will be held at the Halloran Centre for Performing Arts and Education in November.

24. Republican debate for Tennessee governor canceled -

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Organizers have canceled a scheduled Republican debate for governor because two of the leading candidates said they would not participate.

The Tennessean reports the debate had been scheduled for Tuesday at Belmont University between Knoxville businessman Randy Boyd, House Speaker Beth Harwell and Williamson County businessman Bill Lee. But organizers decided to cancel the debate after Boyd and Harwell withdrew amid negotiations about the event's details.

25. Memphis Women’s Hoops Adds 2 Coaches to Staff -

University of Memphis women’s basketball head coach Melissa McFerrin has announced the hiring of Amy Stephens and Michele Savage to the Tigers coaching staff. This will be Stephens’ second stint with Memphis after spending the 2013-14 season as McFerrin’s associate head coach. Both Savage and Stephens will assume an associate head coach title.

26. State Probes Misuse of Funds Accusation Against Acting TBI Leader -

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) – The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation says an immediate, outside review is looking into accusations that its acting director has misused state funds.

TBI spokesman Josh DeVine said Monday that the agency has been made aware of, and takes seriously, the accusations involving Acting Director Jason Locke. TBI did not specify further what the allegations entail.

31. 5 Executives Sentenced in 'Made in USA' Boots Scheme -

GREENEVILLE, Tenn. (AP) – Several former executives of a one-time leading manufacturer of boots for the U.S. military have been sentenced in a "Made in USA" scheme.

The Kingsport Times-News reports the former Wellco Enterprises Inc. executives sold boots falsely advertised as being made in the U.S. The boot uppers and insoles were manufactured in China. The newspaper says workers at a Morristown, Tennessee, factory where the boots' soles were attached were instructed to remove the "Made in China" tags before shipping the footwear.

32. Memphis AD to Serve on NCAA Football Oversight Committee -

University of Memphis Athletic Director Tom Bowen has been named to the NCAA Division I Football Oversight Committee effective immediately, the NCAA announced. Bowen’s term of service on the committee will continue through June 30, 2022.

33. Fewer Adopt Fee Waivers for Records for the 'Public Good' -

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (AP) – The Tennessee Public Records Act is adamant that public records should be available. But that doesn't mean government entities will make them affordable.

A statewide examination of 259 local government public records policies by the Tennessee Coalition for Open Government found that while almost all stated the government entity will charge for copies of public records, fewer offered the possibility of fee waivers.

Jernigan Capital Inc., a Memphis-based real estate investment trust that provides debt and equity capital for self-storage facilities, has named Jonathan Perry executive vice president and chief investment officer. He is expected to join the company in early June.

TOONE, Tenn. (AP) – A defense contractor plans to invest $40 million and add 100 jobs to expand its operations in western Tennessee.

The Department of Economic and Community Development announced Tuesday that the expansion by Kilgore Flares Company, a subsidiary of Chemring Countermeasures USA, will triple production capacity at its Toone operations.

41. Three Companies Seeking Tax Abatements for Expansion Projects -

Three companies will be seeking tax incentive packages from the Economic Development Growth Engine for Memphis and Shelby County during its Wednesday, May 16 meeting.

The largest of the three, online managed content distribution and printing company Mimeo.com, is seeking a 15-year Expansion PILOT (payment in lieu of taxes) for a $13.4 million project at 3350 Miac Cove.

Several thousand people marched Saturday, March 24, from Clayborn Temple to the National Civil Rights Museum in the Memphis version of the national March For Our Lives.

The group, led by students from Memphis schools, called for the passage of federal gun control measures as well as more mental health counseling at schools with chants of “The NRA has got to go” and “Vote them out.”

PITTSBURGH (AP) — It was a beautiful day to honor Mister Rogers with a postage stamp.

The U.S. Postal Service on Friday released a stamp featuring Fred Rogers, the gentle TV host who entertained and educated generations of preschoolers on "Mister Rogers' Neighborhood."

59. Third School’s the Charm -

When Nick King signed with the University of Memphis, he had dreams of being the player he was at East High School: an impossible mismatch all over the floor. Problem was, coach Josh Pastner saw the 6-foot-7 King as a traditional power forward. The conflicting visions never meshed and after two seasons King transferred to the University of Alabama.

60. High Point Climbing Takes Foothold in East Memphis -

Pastner, who is in his second season as coach at Georgia Tech, responded to a question during his post-game press conference after his team played at Louisville.

NEW YORK (AP) – Independent retailers who've had a successful holiday season say they took advantage of the fact that there are strengths in not being huge.

Fastest Labs was founded in 2008 and offers a range of drug, alcohol and DNA testing services, touting other benefits that include no appointment being required and clients getting seen within five minutes of arrival. The company also promises to send test results immediately after the visit as a way of differentiating the brand from competition.

HELSINKI (AP) – Volvo Cars said Monday it will sell tens of thousands of self-driving cars to Uber, which is expanding to become an operator and owner of its own car fleet.

Volvo said in a statement that it would provide the San Francisco-based ride-sharing company with its XC90 premium SUVs complete with autonomous driving technologies, from 2019 until 2021. The framework deal is non-exclusive.
