9. Memphis Drawing More Out-of-Town Retailers -

Second- and third-tier retail markets are seeing a resurgence nationally, and Memphis’ own economic recovery is garnering attention from out-of-town retailers.

Among the higher-end retailers preparing for their first local store are Ikea, which is set to open in the next few months, and Trader Joe’s and Nordstrom Rack, both of which are in their early stages and are expected to open by the end of 2017.

Developers on Tuesday, Jan. 7, cleared a key regulatory hurdle for a planned Whole Foods Market store in Germantown.

Before a packed house, the Germantown Planning Commission voted to approve a revamped plan for a new Whole Foods store at the southeast corner of the intersection of Poplar Avenue and Pete Mitchell Road, on the eastern edge of Germantown’s Central Business District.

The development team behind a proposed Whole Foods store in Germantown is going back to the drawing board after some neighbors expressed concerns about the project, particularly over traffic.

With its 30th birthday less than two years away, the Hilton Memphis' new owners are making sure the iconic hotel ages gracefully.

Built in 1979, this East Memphis landmark is undergoing yet another renovation, this one an $8 million, four-year process courtesy of Davidson Hotel Co., the Memphis-based company that bought the 405-room building in May for $45 million.

A recent ruling by the U.S. Supreme Court could change the way Memphis businesses look at patents.

One thing is for sure, it will definitely change the way attorneys look at them.

In a unanimous ruling on a patent case in late April, the court used a new, more flexible standard that favors competition and ultimately will make it more difficult to get - and keep - patents on new and existing products.

Memphis-based Commercial Alliance Management LLC has been tapped to handle all new leases for a Downtown office portfolio that includes the Morgan Keegan Tower, Falls Building and Toyota Center.

Those buildings are owned by Jackson, Miss.-based Parkway Properties Inc., a real estate investment trust (REIT) that had contracted last fall with Trammell Crow Co. to lease the properties.
