The Americana musician, producer and author was among the performers at the Peabody and he had a bit of trouble getting the group of 700 business and political leaders to sing along with the refrain of one of his most popular tunes – “I Lie When I Drink and I Drink A Lot" -- with at least a dozen video cameras panning the room. But he continued on without audience participation. Other entertainment highlights featured Memphis Mayor Jim Strickland as the voice of Amazon’s Alexa.

Located on a vacant lot at 126 N. Bellevue Blvd, between Jefferson and Poplar avenues, the unique project hopes to serve as a “catalyst for future developments and improvements in the area,” according the Conditional Use Permit application.

9. South Memphis Businesses Awarded $40K in ICED Loans -

A pair of South Memphis businesses were awarded a combined $40,000 in Inner City Economic Development loans by the Economic Development Growth Engine’s finance committee this week.

Champion’s Pharmacy & Herb Store, 2369 Elvis Presley Blvd., and Park Place Recycling & Logistics, 815 E. Georgia Ave., were each approved for a $20,000 ICED loan Wednesday, Feb. 1, to assist with building improvements and business expansions.

10. Sherman Joins Campbell Clinic as Sports Medicine Physician -

Dr. Henry “Hank” Sherman has joined Campbell Clinic Orthopaedics as a sports medicine family practice physician in its Southaven office. Sherman treats patients who suffer from a variety of orthopedic injuries – from competitive athletes looking to get back in the game to weekend warriors who want to stay active later in life.

11. White Joins BankTennessee As Mortgage Specialist -

Judy Sulton White has joined BankTennessee as a mortgage loan specialist. White has worked in the mortgage industry for 30 years and will focus on new-home financing options, mortgage refinances and custom construction loans.

12. Artist Turns Distinctive Signature Into Business -

Fred Spikner made his signature into a brand.

He compressed words and cursive scrawling into a loopy symbol that sort of looked like a couple of hyphenated, illegible alphabet letters. The symbol carried a certain fluidity, attitude and mystery.
