13. US Home Prices Surpass Pre-Recession Peak Amid Healthy Sales -

WASHINGTON (AP) – U.S. home prices have fully recovered from their steep plunge during the housing bust and Great Recession, according to a private measure.

The Standard & Poor's CoreLogic Case-Shiller national home price index , released Tuesday, is slightly above the peak it set in July 2006, after rising 5.5 percent in September from a year earlier. The milestone comes after more than four years of steady gains.

14. Kirk-Ivy Named 2016 Mississippi Commercial Realtor -

Bambi K. Kirk-Ivy, a commercial Realtor and marketing director at Olive Branch-based Utley Properties, recently was recognized as the 2016 Mississippi Commercial Realtor of the Year at the annual Mississippi Realtors Convention and Expo.
As a landlord representative for all of Utley’s properties, most of Kirk-Ivy’s work has been in retail; however, she says the company is now focusing on light industrial-type flex spaces consisting of office, showroom and warehouse uses.

NEW YORK (AP) – As more and more people get their favorite TV shows and movies online, Disney is also learning to embrace the stream.

The Walt Disney Co. once resisted offering channels like ESPN directly over the internet, preferring old-fashioned cable subscriptions. Its investors are fretting over ratings as more people cut the cord and cancel cable or satellite service. NFL game viewership is also down, and the contentious election drew viewers away from Disney networks like ABC to cable news networks.

Mississippi-based Vibrant Hotels Inc. is one step closer to developing a new full-scale hotel in the heart of Downtown Memphis after its special use permit was approved by the Land Use Control Board Thursday, Nov. 10.

33. Downtown May Get New 12-Story Boutique Hotel -

A plan to redevelop the former Tenoke Building into a hotel may be revived several years after a similar idea for the vacant Downtown office high-rise fell through.

Vibrant Hotels Inc., an affiliate of Batesville, Mississippi-based development company JVD Enterprises, is seeking a special use permit that would allow the conversion of the century-old Tenoke, located at 161 Jefferson Ave., and the adjacent one-story office at 191 Jefferson Ave. into an “upper-brand franchised full-service hotel,” according to an application filed with the city-county Office of Planning and Development in August.

Memphis-based Mid-America Apartment Communities Inc. reported third quarter net income of $84.3 million, down from the $91.7 million reported by the real estate investment trust a year ago.

Memphis-based EdR recorded a net loss of $3.5 million, or 5 cents per share, in the third quarter, the real estate investment trust reported Oct. 31. That compares to a net loss of $4.7 million, or 10 cents per share, during the same period a year ago.

NEW YORK (AP) – USA Today publisher Gannett walked away Tuesday from its attempted takeover of Tronc, the owner of the Los Angeles Times, Chicago Tribune and other major dailies.

Gannett's target was elusive from the beginning, with a publicly contentious back-and-forth between the two companies. Tronc, formerly known as Tribune Publishing, rejected at least two bids from Gannett since April because it said it preferred to go it alone and focus on tech-driven initiatives involving artificial intelligence and global expansion in entertainment news and video.

Multifamily real estate sales have been strong in Memphis for a couple of years, and the 41 transactions posted in the third quarter mark the most recorded in a quarter in two years.

“The multifamily market continues to be very strong and has been the strongest real estate sector for the past several years,” said Mark Fogelman, president of Memphis-based Fogelman Management Group, a national multifamily property management company.

When ServiceMaster Global Holdings announced its move to the shuttered Peabody Place Mall from Ridge Lake office park, it promised new life for a 328,000-square-foot black hole in Downtown’s retail market.

49. $92M Graceland Hotel Expected to Be a Catalyst for Whitehaven -

The Heartbreak Hotel on Elvis Presley Boulevard was full Wednesday, Oct. 26 – its final night as a hotel.

By the time the $92 million, 450-room Guest House at Graceland resort opened across the boulevard Thursday morning, many of the doors at the Heartbreak Hotel were missing their room numbers – taken as souvenirs by guests who filled the circa-1980s hotel in its final days.

2010: On the front page of The Daily News, Memphis Mayor A C Wharton marks one year in office with the city filing more than 130 lawsuits in Shelby County Environmental Court against owners of blighted properties. “I’m a lawyer and I’ve gotten to the point where I’m just saying, ‘Hey, I gotta sue somebody,” he says. Wharton says he feels “right at home” in the mayor’s office. “You never see me arguing with council members,” he adds. “Wonder why that is?” The remark is the closest Wharton comes to comparing his governing style to former Mayor Willie Herenton, whose July 2009 resignation set the stage for the October 2009 special election that Wharton won while serving as Shelby County mayor. The contrast in governing styles is one factor in Wharton’s move to City Hall. But Wharton’s relationship with the council is already becoming more complex as he marks one year as mayor.

56. US Home Sales Rebounded in September Despite Tight Supply -

WASHINGTON (AP) — More Americans bought homes in September, many for the first time, despite a persistent shortage of properties for sale.

The National Association of Realtors said Thursday that sales of existing homes rose 3.2 percent from August to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 5.47 million, the strongest pace since June. Sales rose across the country: 5.7 percent in the Northeast, 5 percent in the West, 3.9 percent in the Midwest and 0.9 percent in the South.

NEW YORK (AP) – Tribune Media has completed the sale of several real estate assets, including the Tribune Tower in Chicago.

The Chicago-based company announced last month that it was selling the 1925 neo-Gothic tower to CIM Group. The sale is part of Tribune Media Co.'s ongoing efforts to sell its entire $1 billion real estate portfolio.

After a two-month slump, home sales in Shelby County increased 15 percent in August.

There were 1,712 sales recorded in August compared to 1,494 recorded in August 2015, according to data from real estate information company Chandler Reports, chandlerreports.com.
