Details: In a letter that went out to its congregation over the weekend, Temple Israel announced plans to expand into the Crosstown Concourse this summer.
Officials said the new Crosstown campus won’t be a second synagogue, but will instead enhance the Temple’s community outreach programs.
“We believe that Temple will thrive in Crosstown and that you, the members, will be truly amazed by the collaboration in the years ahead,” Temple Israel president Elkan Scheidt said in the email. “Crosstown’s creativity, innovation, and social-action focus aligns seamlessly with Temple and Reform Judaism’s inclusive philosophy.”
Temple Israel formed a preliminary Crosstown committee, which included Cara Greenstein, Alex Shindler, Daniel Kiel, Meggan Kiel, Bruce Landau, Susanne Landau, Joanna Lipman, Josh Lipman, Liz Rudnick and Elton Parker to discuss the move before deciding to sign a lease for a 1,200-square-foot “Midtown Living Room” in the Concourse.
“By offering countless programming and Tikkun Olam opportunities, Temple Israel Crosstown will bring the celebrated Temple Israel spirit of 38120 to 38104,” the announcement went on to say. “It will also become a new member gateway for unaffiliated Downtown/Midtown Jews and newcomers to Memphis.”
“Tikkun Olam, Hebrew for “repairing this broken world,” expresses the fundamental Jewish idea that what we do to heal the hurt and help those who are suffering most – in our city and in this world – is what matters most to the one God who loves us all,” Rabbi Micah Greenstein, senior rabbi at Temple Israel, said.
The email outlined some of the programs Temple Israel could offer in Crosstown, such as partnerships with their Crosstown neighbors, lunch and learns, baby-and-me classes, Hebrew tutoring and Women of Reformed Judaism-Sisterhood knitting for the Manna House.
Temple Israel, which is located at 1376 E. Massey Road, was founded in 1854 as the first permanent Jewish house of worship in Tennessee and now serves 1,500 member families in the Memphis area.

Plans for Trader Joe’s Germantown location are changing again, and it could expedite the store’s opening.

Developer Centennial American Properties received unanimous approval from the Germantown Planning Commission Tuesday, Jan. 3, for a revised site plan that would locate Trader Joe’s within the former Kroger store at 2130 Exeter Road instead of in a new building on an outparcel of that site.

66. US Pending Home Sales Fell in November -

Fewer Americans signed contracts to buy homes in November. The decrease likely reflects the drag caused by rising mortgage rates and the shallow inventory of properties on the market. 

The National Association of Realtors said Wednesday that its seasonally adjusted pending home sales index fell 2.5 percent to 107.3, the lowest reading since the start of 2016. Pending sales declined in the Midwest, South and West, while improving in the Northeast.

Coming off of a strong year in 2015, the commercial real estate market in the Memphis metropolitan area continued to do well in 2016.

Larry Jensen, president and CEO of Cushman & Wakefield/Commercial Advisors, said his company was tracking approximately 6 million square feet of net absorption in the industrial market headed into the last week of 2016, as compared to 8.4 million in 2015.

LA Fitness is one step closer to opening a Cordova location.

Insomnia Inc., the company owned by former topless-club operator Steve Cooper, sold two parcels near its former restaurant/nightclub on Fischer Steel Road to Orlando, Florida-based National Retail Properties Inc. for $2.4 million, according to a Dec. 20 warranty deed. The same day as the sale, Fitness International LLC, an affiliate of L.A. Fitness International LLC, signed a lease with National Retail Properties for the property.

72. Long-Term US Mortgage Rates Hit Highest Levels Since 2014 -

WASHINGTON (AP) – Long-term US mortgage rates climbed again this week, hitting the highest levels since 2014.

Mortgage giant Freddie Mac said Thursday that the rate on 30-year fixed-rate loans jumped to an average 4.30 percent from 4.16 percent last week and the highest since April 2014. The average for a 15-year mortgage rose to 3.52 percent from 3.37 percent last week and highest since January 2014.

76. December 16-22, 2016: This week in Memphis history -

2015: A record high temperature of 70 degrees at Memphis, according to the National Weather Service. The 70-degree mark ties a record for the date set in 1982.

2011: On the front page of The Daily News, the Memphis City Council approves a planned development for the south side of Madison Avenue in Overton Square, including a new $16 million public parking garage to be built by the city. The garage is eligible for public funding because it is to include a water detention basin in its base that alleviates a chronic flooding problem in the area, which includes Lick Creek. Loeb Properties Inc. has a contract with the Colorado company that owns the entertainment district and the contract runs out at the end of 2011. WASHINGTON (AP) – U.S. home prices have fully recovered from their steep plunge during the housing bust and Great Recession, according to a private measure.

The Standard & Poor's CoreLogic Case-Shiller national home price index , released Tuesday, is slightly above the peak it set in July 2006, after rising 5.5 percent in September from a year earlier. The milestone comes after more than four years of steady gains.
