14. Z-Bo Leaves Memphis With Many Memories -

Eight years ago this week, there was a press conference at FedExForum. The Memphis Grizzlies had acquired a power forward via a trade with the Los Angeles Clippers.

As is the routine when the Grizzlies get a new player, he posed holding his new jersey – No. 50 – with general manager Chris Wallace. That was how the Zach Randolph years started here.

22. Ulta to Join Nordstrom Rack in Poplar Commons Retail Center -

Ulta Beauty will be a neighbor of Nordstrom Rack in the upcoming Poplar Commons shopping center, set to open in the fall of 2017.

This will be the third Ulta store in the Memphis market and the first in the East Memphis submarket.

25. Memphis Army Vet Lands Major Publishing Deal -

For Joshua Hood, everything changed after graduating from the University of Memphis in 2003.

The following year, he enlisted in the Army. His stint in the military, which included service in Iraq and Afghanistan, stretched to 2008. When that was done, he joined the Shelby County Sheriff’s Department in 2009.

The Kickstarter campaign to raise at least $25,000 for the financially struggling Memphis Symphony Orchestra has beaten its goal, pulling in a little more than $28,500.

That’s one example among many of how, once the orchestra’s dire straits became known earlier this year, supporters have been lining up to come to the rescue. And more chances for the public to help are still to come.

31. Retailers See Slow Start to Back-to-School Season -

NEW YORK (AP) – Shoppers are holding off on back-to-school shopping, and those who delay long enough might be rewarded with some steep discounts from desperate retailers.

Revenue at stores open at least a year – an industry measure of a retailer's health– rose 3.8 percent in July, the slowest pace since March, according to a preliminary tally of 10 retailers by the International Council of Shopping Centers. The figure, which excludes drugstores, was below a 5.5 percent increase in June.

As consumer demand for healthy, locally grown food has increased, farmers markets are cropping up all over Memphis.

Farmers markets provide a place for smaller producers to sell their goods, and hopefully earn a profit. But profitability can be challenging for the operators who run the markets. Some, like Agricenter International’s Farmer’s Market and the farmers market at the Memphis Botanic Garden run the markets to support their overall mission. They say the markets are about more than profitability.

Batman, Superman, Spider-Man, the Fantastic Four and many other comic book heroes and heroines have commanded the attention of dedicated fans since their debuts in the middle of the last century.

Just last month, a copy of “Amazing Fantasy #15,” a comic featuring the first appearance of Spider-Man back in 1962, sold for $1.1 million to a private collector.

It was two years ago at a Five Guys Burgers and Fries franchisee conference when license rights to Memphis were up for grabs.

Mark Moseley, director of franchising for the Lorton, Va.-based burger chain and friend of FedEx Corp. founder Fred Smith, approached Alabama franchisee Seth Hargett about putting together a package and asked him if he wanted Memphis.

Shelby Singleton has been talking to a colorful cast of characters about selling the Sun Records label he bought in 1969.

Singleton is chairman of Sun Entertainment Holding Corp., the Nashville company that owns the Sun logo and master recordings of such musicians as Jerry Lee Lewis, Johnny Cash and Carl Perkins. He was a record producer himself before buying the Memphis label and its catalog from Sam Phillips.
