1. Inner Fortitude -

Amid a teacher shortage attributed partly to economic opportunities luring away candidates, local educators are creating urban teaching programs and adopting new recruitment strategies.

Rhodes College is launching a master’s program in urban education in June and is offering a $10,000 scholarship to each student. If the student receives a Stafford federal loan of $15,000 and commits to teaching at a “high-need” school, the degree essentially will be free.

2. SRVS' Saulsberry Honored for Her Work -

Wendy Saulsberry is one of two recipients of the 2016 Direct Support Professional of the Year for Tennessee by the American Network of Community Options and Resources. Saulsberry is a direct support professional for SRVS, a United Way agency that supports more than 1,200 children and adults with disabilities.
Saulsberry says that as a DSP, she is deeply committed to the well-being of SRVS clients, assists them with their daily activities and advocates on behalf of their interests.

3. Sports Notebook: Lynch at Gruden’s QB Camp, Memphis Defense, Cards' Leadoff Hitter -

If you want to see the whole thing, Jon Gruden’s QB Camp with former University of Memphis quarterback Paxton Lynch will air at 11 a.m. on Saturday, April 16, on ESPN. The NFL Draft is April 28-30 in Chicago.

I am blessed to have as a regular reader one Kathy Young. Kathy keeps the books at Palmer Brothers, a commercial real estate firm in Memphis that turns 103 years old this year. Greater Memphis National College Fair will be held Tuesday, Feb. 24, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. and Wednesday, Feb. 25, from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at Agricenter International, 7777 Walnut Grove Road. Students and parents can meet with admission representatives from a wide range of colleges and universities, learn about financial aid and discuss individual needs with college experts. 6. U of M Sub Shop Finds New Home -

Super Submarine Sandwich Shop is moving along with its plans to relocate from its longstanding location on the Highland Avenue strip near the University of Memphis.

A $141,000 building permit has been applied with the city-county Office of Construction Code Enforcement for the interior and exterior remodel of the old Captain D’s restaurant space at 3316 Summer Ave.

7. Green Line Marketing Doubles Office -

Green Line Marketing Group has outgrown its East Memphis office space due to its expanded staff and client roster.

The boutique agency has signed a 2,000-square-foot lease in Racquet Club Plaza, where it will relocate from its three 350-square-foot executive suites in Clark Tower by the end of the month.

8. Digs of Highland Avenue Sub Shop, Whatever in Flux -

Two mainstay retail businesses on the Highland strip, Super Submarine Sandwich Shop and smoking accessory and gift shop Whatever, have about six months to find new locales.

That’s because the property owner of 612 S. Highland St. is under contract to sell the 9,628-square-foot strip center to a new owner that will allegedly raze it.

10. New Owner For Bartlett Car Wash Property -

A former car wash site in Bartlett has traded hands. Nyan Jaf acquired the 0.71-acre lot at 5960 Summer Ave. from Mr. Carwash LLC for $65,000.

11. Monroe Ave. Bldg. Sells For $3.3M -

A fully leased Downtown office building has traded hands for more than twice its assessed value.

309 Monroe Property LLC purchased the 22,792-square-foot property at 309 Monroe Ave. for $3.3 million. The Shelby County Assessor of Property’s 2011 appraisal was $1.5 million.

When Bert Smythe decided to launch new restaurant concept Alchemy last summer in the Cooper-Young district, the 5,200-square-foot space formerly occupied by Grace and Au Fond Farmtable seemed about 25 percent larger than was needed.

Christian Brothers University has chosen a new dean of information and technology services.

David Palmer brings more than 20 years of strategic technology leadership and management experience to CBU. He has worked for global corporations including the Hilton hotel chain, and he’s managed budgets large and small in addition to global infrastructures, corporate IT acquisitions and complex contracts. He also has startup, consulting and prior university experience.

Ron Riley launched his sales career by selling copiers and printers at Xerox Corp. shortly after receiving his bachelor’s degree in business from the University of Memphis.

There aren't many places in Cordova where customers can see live music, hear a philosophy discussion, catch a dinner theater performance and enjoy a hot cup of Joe. But at Huffman's Deli Cafe, which celebrates its two-year anniversary in December, patrons find all of that and more.
