Amid a teacher shortage attributed partly to economic opportunities luring away candidates, local educators are creating urban teaching programs and adopting new recruitment strategies.

Rhodes College is launching a master’s program in urban education in June and is offering a $10,000 scholarship to each student. If the student receives a Stafford federal loan of $15,000 and commits to teaching at a “high-need” school, the degree essentially will be free.

Wendy Saulsberry is one of two recipients of the 2016 Direct Support Professional of the Year for Tennessee by the American Network of Community Options and Resources. Saulsberry is a direct support professional for SRVS, a United Way agency that supports more than 1,200 children and adults with disabilities.
Saulsberry says that as a DSP, she is deeply committed to the well-being of SRVS clients, assists them with their daily activities and advocates on behalf of their interests.

Super Submarine Sandwich Shop is moving along with its plans to relocate from its longstanding location on the Highland Avenue strip near the University of Memphis.

A $141,000 building permit has been applied with the city-county Office of Construction Code Enforcement for the interior and exterior remodel of the old Captain D’s restaurant space at 3316 Summer Ave.
