Memphis City Council members were told Tuesday, March 6, that removing a mural from a private business front on Lamar Avenue will be difficult despite a council call to do so.

The zombie-like mural by the artist Dustin Spagnola has drawn most of the ire of council members for several months. Some have called it “satanic.” Others on the council argue the imagery isn’t respectful of the surrounding community.

Vishal Trolley Station LLC purchased the property from Kimco Trolley Station LP in an Oct. 29 special warranty deed, financing the deal with a $1.9 million deed of trust through Citizens Savings Bank & Trust Co. Shiv K. Aggarwal signed the trust deed as sole manager of Vishal Trolley Station.

19. School Board Starts Process on School Closings-Transformations -

Countywide school board members voted Thursday, Nov. 29, to begin the process of considering the closing of four elementary schools in western Memphis and the conversion of two other inner city schools in what amounts to a move to compete with the Achievement School District.

20. Opponents of School Closings Raise Concerns -

The first of three of the most politically challenging decisions the countywide school board has to make about the consolidation of public schools probably won’t happen this week.

Instead of taking a first preliminary vote Thursday, Nov. 29, to close 21 schools by the August merger date, Memphis City Schools superintendent Kriner Cash is asking the board to start a set of “impact studies” and schedule public hearings for closing five elementary schools.

Countywide school board members put off a vote Tuesday, Nov. 20, on a recommendation to close 21 schools in northwest and southwest Memphis.

The recommendation from the schools consolidation planning commission is considered one of the most controversial items from the citizens group that made 172 recommendations in all on the move to a merger of Shelby County's two public school systems earlier this year.

When countywide school board members finish their work session Tuesday, Nov. 20, the real work will begin.

That’s when the school board will get back to the work of acting on schools merger recommendations from the consolidation planning commission.

ATLANTA (AP) – Delta Air Lines Inc. pilots want their seniority list merged with Northwest Airlines Corp.’s pilot list based on pilots’ status and aircraft category, while Northwest pilots insist the fair and equitable method is to merge the lists based on pilots’ date of hire.

Within months of Delta’s buyout of Northwest, the airline will begin shifting its planes around to put them on the right routes, a Delta executive said this week.

The two fleets will operate separately until after the federal government signs off on a joint operating certificate, which could take much of next year. But they don’t have to wait that long to shift planes to different routes, with the potential for Northwest 747s to fly out of Atlanta, for instance.
