50. 'Perfect Storm' of High River, Mechanical Failure Shuts North Wastewater Plant -

As the Mississippi River at Memphis neared a crest of 39.4 feet, the river overwhelmed and submerged three pumps at the city’s north wastewater treatment plant Thursday, March 8, causing the Maynard Stiles Wastewater Treatment Plant to shut down. The result was raw sewage coming through manholes at nearby General DeWitt Spain Airport in Frayser and an overflow that is going untreated into the Mississippi River.

Going to the doctor is going high-tech at two rural West Tennessee clinics in a few weeks, thanks to a project University Clinical Health plans to launch within the next 30 days.

UCH is a physician group and affiliated faculty practice plan of the University of Tennessee College of Medicine in Memphis. It encompasses about 130 physicians, covering 18 specialties, and all of its physicians are also faculty members with the College of Medicine.

The Arkansas Democrat-Gazette reports the FDA issued a statement Friday saying the study was immediately put on hold in September when agency officials learned the four monkeys had died at the National Center for Toxicological Research.

79. AP Source: Former Uber CEO Kalanick Selling Part of Stake -

DETROIT (AP) — Uber co-founder and former CEO Travis Kalanick will sell 29 percent of his stake in the ride-hailing service, a person briefed on the deal says.

The sale is part of a transaction with investors that includes Softbank Group Corp. and would bring Kalanick about $1.4 billion, according to the person, who asked not to be identified because the sale terms are private. Kalanick had not previously sold Uber shares but decided to do so now to diversify his holdings, the person said.

83. Technicolor, Agilent Approved for Tax Incentives -

The Economic Development Growth Engine for Memphis and Shelby County approved a pair of tax abatements Wednesday, Dec. 20, that have the potential to affect more than 1,000 jobs in the county.

The payment-in-lieu-of-taxes agreement for California-based life sciences, diagnostics and applied chemical company Agilent Technologies would create 117 new jobs, while one for a division of multimedia production and distribution giant Technicolor would retain anywhere from 158 to 916 jobs.

Chris Lankford has been named farm manager for Agricenter International’s newly created Organic Resource Center, which is designed to be a resource for Mid-South growers in the basics of the organic certification process. Lankford will be responsible for the operation of the new organic farm, developing peri-urban agriculture projects, and promoting organic agricultural practices. He also will assist the director of research in additional research as well as the operation of Agricenter’s farm as a whole.

99. FDA to Target Addictive Levels of Nicotine in Cigarettes -

For the first time, the federal government is proposing cutting the nicotine level in cigarettes so they aren't so addictive.

U.S. Food and Drug Administration chief Scott Gottlieb on Friday directed the agency's staff to develop new regulations on nicotine. The FDA has had the power since 2009 to regulate nicotine levels but hasn't done so. Stocks of cigarette makers plunged after the announcement.

100. SCO Opens FocalPoint Telemedicine Clinic -

Southern College of Optometry has opened FocalPoint, the first facility of its kind in the United States to offer completely paperless telemedicine via a service called EyecareLive.

FocalPoint’s 8,000-square-foot clinic has four doctors and offers several technological advances for eye health along with exclusive eyewear lines. The clinic also provides clinical instruction space for the college’s students.
