TAG Truck Center is moving forward with a $28 million trucking facility at the former site of the Mall of Memphis. Contractor Linkous Construction Co. recently filed two building permits for TAG’s new headquarters.

The Downtown Memphis Commission is accepting applications for grants that will activate the street with creative meet-ups and art installations.

Up to $5,000 is available per grant for projects that bring about creative place-making and social and professional engagement.

5. ServiceMaster to Change Mall’s Exterior -

Memphis-based ServiceMaster Global Holdings Inc. and its landlord, Belz Enterprises, plan to remove the pedestrian skybridge into the Peabody Place development that crosses over Second Street and will add more than 50 new windows to the second and third levels on the Second Street side of the mall.

Are your lights on yet? How is your air conditioning? First came the rain Wednesday night and then came the power outages that stretched into Thursday.

So the last Twitter update from Memphis Light Gas and Water at 8 p.m. Thursday shows 248 outages in the MLGW service area with 2,746 customers still in the dark and the worst heat of the year so far. Those numbers translate to 95 percent of the customers impacted having their power restored Thursday evening.

8. EDGE Grants Incentives for TAG Truck Center, Turner Dairy -

Two longtime Memphis-area companies secured tax incentives at the June meeting of the Memphis-Shelby County Economic Development Growth Engine.

The payment-in-lieu-of-taxes will support TAG Truck Enterprises LLC’s plans for the former Mall of Memphis site as well as an expansion of Turner Dairy in the heart of Midtown.

9. Parking Was Key in ServiceMaster Deal -

Parking concerns for ServiceMaster Global Holdings’ move to Downtown Memphis have been resolved.

On June 14, the Downtown Parking Authority granted ServiceMaster access to the parking garage at 250 Peabody Place.

The Center City Revenue Finance Corp. approved a tax incentive package Tuesday, June 14, to support ServiceMaster Global Holdings’ conversion of Peabody Place mall into a multimillion-dollar headquarters.

11. EDGE to Consider Incentives for ServiceMaster, Others -

ServiceMaster Global Holdings is one of three local companies with tax-incentive applications before the Memphis-Shelby County Economic Development Growth Engine board on Wednesday, June 15.

The residential- and commercial-services company, which plans to move its headquarters into the former Peabody Place mall in Downtown Memphis, is seeking a payment-in-lieu-of-taxes incentive to offset its $9.3 million personal property investment for items such as furniture, fixtures, computers and equipment.

12. Show Time -

For the first time in years, the Peabody Place mall was packed. On June 3, hundreds of ServiceMaster employees and a handful of business and government leaders ushered in One ServiceMaster Center, a multimillion-dollar headquarters for Memphis’ fourth-largest public company.

13. City, State Incentives Lining Up For ServiceMaster's Move Downtown -

ServiceMaster Global Holdings Inc. will be getting a lot of help with its headquarters move into the vacant Peabody Place mall.

Documents obtained by The Daily News show that mall landlord Belz Enterprises will contribute $12 million to improvements to the facility while ServiceMaster will invest $14.8 million in converting the 340,000-square-foot retail center into corporate offices with open working and research spaces.

The Whitehaven mainstay was bought in a March 31 substitute trustee’s sale by an entity called 1215 East Shelby Drive Holdings LLC. The sale did not include the mall’s two anchor spaces – the Sears store on the west end and the shuttered Macy’s on the east end.

16. City Council Approves Colonial Conversion, Vintage Trolley Purchase -

One of two golf courses at Colonial Country Club would give way to houses under a planned development approved Tuesday, Jan. 19, by the Memphis City Council.

The council approved a development that would turn the north course at Colonial into either a mix of single-family homes, townhouses and cottages or a mix of housing for senior citizens.

Details: The 113-acre former Mall of Memphis property has a new owner. TAG Real Estate Holdings, an affiliate of Memphis-based TAG Truck Enterprises LLC, paid $3.9 million, or $34,513 an acre, to buy the property from Johnson Development Associates Inc., acting as Memphis Industrial Properties LLC.

18. Mall of Memphis Land Sold to Trucking Company -

The development company that wanted to build a speculative industrial park on the former Mall of Memphis site has sold the property instead.

Johnson Development Associates, Inc., acting as Memphis Industrial Properties, LLC, has unloaded the Mall of Memphis land in a Dec. 29 warranty deed.

19. Tanger Southaven Expected To Drive More DeSoto County Retail -

At its grand opening Nov. 20, Tanger Outlets Southaven mall will finally see light after years of development.

The project, which initially was developed by Memphis-based Poag Shopping Centers and shelved during the recession, was revived thanks to a relationship with national group Tanger Factory Outlet Centers Inc. and several public partnerships with DeSoto County and the state of Mississippi.

In recent years, the tax incentives used to bring economic development and jobs to Memphis have been a lightning rod.

The debate’s volume grew as it became apparent that Memphis was emerging from the national recession at a slower pace than other major cities as well as some parts of rural west Tennessee and north Mississippi.

35. Commercial Real Estate Takes a Beating -

Commercial real estate suffered a sharp decline in May, with sales falling dramatically from the same month a year ago and the previous month.

Shelby County saw just 35 commercial sales in May, marking a 49 percent dropoff from 69 sales in May 2008 and a 35 percent dropoff from 54 sales in April, according to the latest data from real estate information company Chandler Reports, www.chandlerreports.com.

The World Overcomers Ministries Church Inc. has bought the former Macy’s department store at the Hickory Ridge Mall. The church, which already owned the main mall building, paid $1 million for the 212,282-square-foot store. Macy’s anchored the mall’s west side before a tornado damaged the property last year.
