The Germantown school board has approved a contract to buy 38 acres of land at Forest Hill-Irene Road and Poplar Pike for a new elementary school for 750 children.

The board, which voted on the contract Wednesday, April 5, also set terms for further negotiations to possibly buy Germantown Elementary and/or Middle schools from Shelby County Schools.

5. Snowball Express Benefits Local Families Who Lost Military Parent -

Seven local families are in Dallas/Fort Worth this week for the 11th annual Snowball Express Weekend, an all-expense-paid holiday gala for children of fallen military heroes.

They are among approximately 1,800 children and spouses of fallen military participating in the event that runs Dec. 11-15.

14. ‘Complete Gut’ Planned for Dermon Building in Downtown Memphis -

The historic Dermon Building at the northeast corner of Third Street and Court Avenue will be turned into a boutique hotel following a recent purchase.

The 46 N. Third St. structure, which was built in 1925, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places due to its art deco and Renaissance-styled architecture. Real estate and bail bonding firms have occupied the lower levels, but the 10-story building has sat completely vacant for a few years and substantially vacant for well over 10 years.

15. Appeals Court Vacates Kyle Ruling on Bail Bond Rules -

Shelby County Chancery Court has no jurisdiction over the rules that Criminal Court judges make for bail bond companies.

That’s what the Tennessee Court of Appeals has ruled in a case that reversed a March decision by Chancellor Jim Kyle, which barred Criminal Court judges from enforcing a drug-testing requirement in its recently updated rules for bail bond companies.

The University of Memphis Cecil C. Humphreys School of Law is celebrating its golden anniversary this year. On Oct. 27, the school held its 50th anniversary celebration for the Downtown facility, which opened in 2010 and marked a new chapter for a building that once was the Front Street post office for nearly 40 years and a federal courthouse before that.

The Deaf Family Literacy Academy (DFLA) of Memphis, which has been in the pipeline for roughly two years, was founded with the financial support of Tennessee-based Dollar General, which wanted to fund a literacy program in Memphis and Shelby County.

The largest securities fraud case ever brought in Memphis federal court returns to a courtroom today for the re-sentencing of its key player – David Namer.

U.S. District Judge Bernice Donald sentenced Namer in 2003 to 29 years and two months in prison nine months after a jury convicted him of 93 counts of conspiracy, securities fraud, mail fraud, wire fraud, tax evasion and money laundering.
