The news of Malco’s 38,000-square-foot theater comes several months after the 160-plus-acre mixed-use Lake District project announced its first tenant would be The Stock Market, an upscale grocery store operated by independent retailer Jeff Burkhead.

11. Malco Sues Overton Square Landlord Over Lack of Parking -

Memphis-based Malco Theatres Inc. is suing Overton Square landlord Loeb Properties over the dwindling number of parking spaces surrounding Studio on the Square.

The movie theater chain alleges net profits from Studio on the Square have been reduced as a result of insufficient free parking, which Malco claims is in violation of a long-standing lease agreement, according to documents filed in Shelby County Chancery Court.

A protest Sunday evening at the Prescott Place Apartments after federal ICE agents – Immigration and Customs Enforcement – took people into custody there and at Emerald Ridge and Corner Park apartments Sunday morning. The group of organizations protesting the federal action – Memphis Coalition of Concerned Citizens, Cosecha and SURJ Memphis -- say Memphis Police assisted in the immigration operation. Memphis Police deny they were involved in any way. No estimate from ICE on how many people were detained.

13. Malco Theatres Moves Forward With Adjusted Powerhouse Cinema Plans -

The Malco Powerhouse Cinema proposed for Downtown’s South Main Historic Arts District is still a go, despite delays that have already pushed it well past its expected opening day.

But the roughly $8 million project is going to look a little different than initially proposed, Malco officials disclosed recently, due to projected costs that came back much too high.

Malco Theatres’ Downtown movie theater continues to take shape, with the Memphis-based cinema chain seeking its second multimillion-dollar building permit for the project in recent months.

Malco has filed a $5 million building permit application with the Office of Construction Code Enforcement for the seven-screen theater being built at at 45 E. G.E. Patterson Ave., at the southeast corner of G.E. Patterson and Front Street. The application lists Linkous Construction Co. as the contractor, SRC Consultants as the engineer and TK Architects as the architect.

18. MBX Teen Workforce Seminar, Job Fair April 1-2 -

The 21 percent youth unemployment rate in Memphis in 2015 is evidence of one challenge. It goes further.

“It’s an issue plaguing Memphis because a large population of teens are unemployed, but also a large population has no job training,” said community advocate Jaques Hamilton, who will be helping teens ages 16-19 with resume writing, interview preparation and other skills as part of the Memphis Black Expo (MBX) Workforce Ready Seminar and Youth Summer Job Fair at Hamilton High School.

Malco Theatres hopes to start construction next month on its boutique movie theater Downtown thanks to a hefty grant from the CCDC.

At its Aug. 17 meeting, the Center City Development Corp. approved a $125,000 grant for the “high-impact” project. The grant amount soars past what the CCDC, an affiliate board of the Downtown Memphis Commission, has awarded in the past. Most of the storefront improvement grants over the past few years have come in below $30,000.

Malco Theatres’ Premier Lanes Oxford, a 20-lane, 36,000-square-foot center, opens May 15. The center will have 14 regular bowling lanes and six “boutique” lanes in a special VIP area that can be reserved for parties.

36. $30 Million Apartment Community to Rise Near Lakeland -

A $30 million multifamily community is beginning to take shape on the east side of Houston Levee Road just south of U.S. 64 in Memphis.

Developed by WessCorp Communities, the Charleston Place apartments will house 284 units and is the first new multifamily project in that area in a decade. The Memphis office of Financial Federal Bank has arranged the $30 million construction financing of Charleston Place.

37. Harahan Bridge Could Get Brighter -

Memphis civic and business leaders are in the early stages of talking with an anonymous donor about lighting the Harahan Bridge while a Memphis-based movie theater titan is exploring building a new theater Downtown.

38. Holding On -

The national outlook for traditional enclosed malls is bleak. No new enclosed mall has been built in the U.S. since 2006. More than 24 have closed since 2010, and an additional 60 are teetering on the edge, according to data from Green Street Advisors. Around 15 percent of malls nationwide are expected to close in the next decade.

42. Grand Reopening Planned for Malco Winchester -

Malco Theatres is planning a grand reopening celebration April 11 for the Winchester Cinema, which recently completed renovations.

The cinema’s upgrade included fully converting to digital cinema, installing larger wall-to-wall screens, remodeling the lobby, restrooms and concession stand and upgrading all seats with plush rocking chairs.

Memphis-based Malco Theatres has acquired a nine-screen movie theater in Winchester, Ky., from Bluegrass Theatres.

The cinema has been reopened as the Malco Winchester Cinema and will undergo major renovations over the next few months. Jimmy Tashie, Malco executive vice president of theater operations, said the company is making “a significant financial investment” in the new facility.

54. Malco Theatres Opening New Locations -

Malco Theatres is in the midst of a growth spurt.

The Memphis-based movie chain has acquired a shuttered 10-screen movie theater and outdoor amphitheater in Oxford, Miss. It’s in Oxford Commons, a 480-acre mixed-use commercial, residential, hospitality and entertainment development in the North Mississippi town.

MovieMaker magazine has included the Indie Memphis Film Festival on the magazine’s list of “Top 50 Film Festivals Worth the Entry Fee.”

MovieMaker has for more than 10 years compiled its annual guide for aspiring independent filmmakers. This year the magazine expanded its list from 25 to 50 festivals in “order to encompass a more diverse range of fest locations.”

The movie chain completed initial site work several years ago but decided to shelve the development when the recession hit. The company announced this week it’s resumed construction on the project with plans for completion by the middle of next year.

Malco Theatres and YoLo Frozen Yogurt have teamed up to offer self-serve frozen yogurt at the Paradiso Cinema and Malco Smyrna Cinema locations.

Beginning Monday, July 16, patrons at both locations will have a new dessert option to accompany the current concession menu at the movies. Malco Theatres converted space in both locations that was formerly an Internet cafe into a “mini” YoLo Frozen Yogurt Shop.

Patrons at all 33 Malco Theatre locations will be able to buy handmade bows for $1. Each bow is made from 24 frames of film, which is equivalent to one second of a movie. Patients of St. Jude and their families participated in the creation of the bows at the hospital.

77. Memphis Silver Screen World Has Champion in Edwards -

In the late 1990s, Les Edwards was close to parlaying his love of independent and art-house films into something tangible that all of Midtown Memphis could appreciate: a new Midtown cinema.

A former executive at a Memphis medical company, Edwards and his wife, Emily Trenholm, had lined up the financing, hired an architect and began getting the zoning variances they needed for what they envisioned would be a three-screen movie theater. A verbal commitment was secured for space on Madison Avenue next to what today is Neil’s bar.

It was 1977, the same year a futuristic space adventure called "Star Wars" debuted in theaters. For the first time, Memphis-based Malco Theatres Inc. dimmed the lights and turned on four screens in its newest cinema, the Ridgeway Four along Ridgeway Center Parkway.
