Election Day arrives in Shelby County.

And this election cycle, in the shadow of the November Presidential general election, has turned out to be pretty interesting.

2. Les Passees ‘Stock Exchange’ Enters 30th Year -

During World War I, members of Les Passees Inc. made bandages and did knitting for soldiers. Today the oldest women’s volunteer organization in Memphis is about to celebrate the 30th year of its “Stock Exchange” upscale consignment shop.

3. Hughes Promoted at Harris Shelton -

Brett Hughes has been promoted to managing member at Harris Shelton Hanover Walsh PLLC law firm. In his new role, Hughes will provide managerial support to the firm’s three offices. His primary responsibility will be to manage the firm’s administration and committees, particularly on issues that impact client service, as well as the morale, compensation, growth and development of the firm.

4. StyleBlueprint to Give $5,000 to Local Charity -

Digital lifestyle publication StyleBlueprint Memphis is giving $5,000 to a Memphis charity and is calling on Memphians to vote online over the next four weeks to help them decide which agency receives the funds.

5. What They’re Cooking Isn’t Genuine Gumbo -

IT TAKES OKRA. This Sunday, April 15, Mike Warr has asked me to help judge the gumbo cookoff at the City Auto Rajun Cajun Crawfish Festival, the annual mudbug throwdown to benefit Porter-Leath. Mike started this party when he was at the helm of Captain Bilbo’s 23 years ago, initially ordering 600 pounds of crawfish. Now he heads Porter-Leath, and this year some 20,000 people will be picking away at 16,000 pounds of the little critters.

6. Sister Joan Byrne Finds Calling in Memphis -

When Sister Joan Byrne completed her high school education at a boarding school run by the Irish Sisters of Mercy in County Westmeath, Central Ireland, she made the biggest commitment of her life: to stay on and join the religious order.

7. Consigned to a Cause -

When the women of Les Passees sit down to discuss the Stock Exchange – the nonprofit group’s largest annual fundraiser, which kicks off with a preview party Thursday at 7 p.m. – they don’t talk much about the sale itself.

8. Events -

Les Passees will host its second Family Night event today from 6 p.m. to 11 p.m. at Golf & Games Family Park, 5484 Summer Ave. A portion of the wristband sales will go to Les Passees, which provides advocacy and support to children and families in Memphis. Les Passees wristbands are available for the pre-sale price of $15 and can be bought at Les Passees headquarters, 5489 Murray Road or at Cheer Station, 7740 Trinity Road, No. B, Suite 126. The rain date will be Aug. 15.

9. Events -

The Mid-South Area Business Travel Association will hold a luncheon today from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Fleming’s Prime Steakhouse, 6245 Poplar Ave. The luncheon topic will be “The Economy’s Impact on Business Travel.” Cost is $25 for members and $40 for guests. 10. Fogerty Works to Increase Community Service in Legal Field -

Whitney King Fogerty is a shareholder with Ogletree, Deakins, Nash, Smoak & Stewart PC, a labor and employment firm. Recently, she was ranked by her peers in the Chambers USA publication as one of the best labor and employment lawyers in the country.

Les Passees Inc. will host its first Family Night today from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. at Golf & Games Family Park, 5484 Summer Ave. Patrons with a Les Passees wristband will have unlimited access to games, rides and putt-putt. Proceeds from the wristband sales will go to the organizations Les Passees supports via grants. Wristbands will cost $15 in advance and $25 at the door. The University of Memphis will host international financial expert Lynn Turner today at 7:30 a.m. at the Holiday Inn-University of Memphis, 3700 Central Ave. Turner's talk, "What Makes Markets Work or Not Work," is part of the Fogelman College of Business & Economics' 2008 Distinguished Speaker Series.
