A $71.2 million federal transportation grant announced Tuesday, June 5, in Washington, D.C., will fund long-planned and awaited infrastructure updates to the city’s major freight corridor.

Funding under the Infrastructure for Rebuilding America grant by the U.S. Department of Transportation goes for repairs and upgrades to Lamar Avenue from Getwell Avenue to the Mississippi state line.

A Target fulfillment center in southeast Memphis is closing in April, resulting in 486 layoffs.

Radial, a third-party logistics firm that manages the distribution center for Target Corp., has filed notice with the Tennessee Department of Labor and Workforce Development that the permanent layoffs at its 5461 Davidson Road facility will start April 7 and continue through April 30.

A Rome, Ga.-based surface components manufacturer is relocating its distribution facility to the Southeast Memphis industrial submarket.

Capitoline Products has signed a 23,500-square-foot lease at 5805 Advantage Cove, confirmed the firm’s co-owner, L.G. Smith. The company is currently located off Lamar Avenue.

A 51,000-square-foot industrial building in the Southeast submarket has traded hands. JLS Enterprises LLC purchased 4021 Delp St. in Airport Industrial Park for $850,000. The warehouse currently houses Coca-Cola Enterprises Inc. and is 100 percent occupied.

A Cordova retail center is under new ownership for the third time in five years. Atlanta-based Altus Real Estate Advisors LLC has purchased Trinity Place, 7990 Trinity Road, for $2.8 million.

Memphis awning and canopy maker Parasol Awnings recently took first place honors for “new and unusual” and “industrial applications” at the annual convention for the Southwest Industrial Fabrics Association.

90. Dodging the Deluge -

The last time the Memphis river gauge was this high, Memphis was a much different place. In 1937 when the Mississippi River at Memphis topped 48.7 feet, Mud Island was really an island with no levee connecting it to the city and the Wolf River flowing between it and the city proper. Parts of the city were still rural as was the county outside Memphis. Today’s suburban development was a long way off, and Millington was still a few years away from getting the Naval Air Station.

A San Jose, Calif.-based worldwide electronics distributor is entering the Memphis area with full force.

WPG Americas Inc. has signed a 54,000-square-foot lease at Airways Distribution Center, 481 Industrial Drive, in Southaven. The project – a relocation of the WPG America’s New York facility – represents a $1.5 million investment by the company and will create 60 jobs over the next three years.

Family Dollar has signed a 12,000-square-foot lease at 2754 Lamar Ave. Shawn Massey, partner with The Shopping Center Group LLC, represented the tenant. Harold Blockman with Keller Williams Realty Inc. represented the landlord, Chong K and Dul S. Pae.

96. Memphis Stands Tall as Logistics Industry Struggles -

Although the aftermath of the recession was palpable across all industry sectors in 2010, Memphis continued to prove its status as a critical logistics and distribution center.

The year came to a close with a milestone in economic development when Swedish manufacturer Electrolux said it will build a $190 million manufacturing plant on 800 acres of land in the Frank C. Pidgeon Industrial Park in southwest Memphis.
