1. Israeli-Based Firm Purchases Industrial Park for $13M -

Faropoint Investments, an Israel-based real estate firm, has purchased the Outland Business Center for $13 million, now its largest holding in the area.

On Feb. 11, Faropoint closed on the Southeast Memphis park, which includes five industrial buildings totaling more than 400,000 square feet at Outland Center Drive and Burbank Road.

2. Last Word: Clinton in Whitehaven, Changes to Parkside and The Replacements Book -

The Presidential primary caravan has arrived.
Former President Bill Clinton was in Whitehaven Thursday evening to campaign for his wife, former Secretary of State and U.S. Senator Hillary Clinton.
And it was a reminder of his political potency as well as his popularity in a city that went for Barack Obama over his wife in the 2008 Tennessee Presidential primary but which was solidly behind him in both of his successful bids for the White House in the 1990s.
Clinton spoke in a packed Whitehaven High gymnasium to more than 700 people for almost an hour and then worked the crowd that gathered near the podium for another 25 minutes before sprinting out a door to a waiting car.
We’ll be busy this weekend with the opening of the local Bernie Sanders campaign headquarters and we’re still waiting on that promised Donald Trump Memphis appearance.
And we expect to encounter lots of Republican presidential partisans at the local GOP's annual Lincoln Day Gala on the 20th.

3. New Numbers: Memphis Industrial Market Breaks Records -

The Memphis industrial sector had a banner year in 2015. According to year-end data from Cushman & Wakefield/Commercial Advisors, last year’s absorption level came in at 8.4 million square feet, 2 million square feet higher than 2006’s pre-recession levels and a record for the market.

NEW YORK (AP) — Stocks posted steep losses Friday, ending the week with broad declines, as investors fretted over a report showing that U.S. job creation slowed last month.

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Federal Reserve sounded a note of concern Wednesday about how global pressures could affect the U.S. economy, while keeping a key interest rate unchanged.

Six weeks after it raised rates from record lows, the Fed took stock of a more perilous international picture that could alter its plans for further raising rates. The statement it issued after its latest policy meeting signaled that the Fed could slow future rate hikes if financial market losses and global weakness don't abate.

20. Collierville Board Grants FedEx Tax Break Extension -

The Collierville Board of Mayor and Aldermen ratified a 20-year tax break for the FedEx World Technology Center during its Monday, Jan. 25, meeting.

FedEx will pay nearly $25.2 million over the period and will save about $75.5 million. As part of the retention PILOT agreement, FedEx will invest $40 million in real property and personal property upgrades.

Here are the basics:
You order from a list of items and Kroger fills the order and has it waiting for you to pick up.
When you think about the idea of supermarkets, which originated here in Memphis with Piggly Wiggly, it’s enough to make the Piggly Wiggly founder himself, Clarence Saunders, spin in his grave.
Before he came up with the idea of taking store shelves from behind the counter and putting them out there for you to get your own stuff from them, you would tell your grocer what you wanted and he would write it down on a paper bag and get it for you, wrap it up and present it to you.
Saunders changed all of that as you know if you’ve seen the Pink Palace’s child-sized replica of a Piggly Wiggly store from the start of the 20th century.
A century later, no paper bags and you can still walk among the shelves if you wish.
Perhaps this isn’t that extreme. Maybe this is simply a swing of the pendulum, back toward the middle ground.
Saunders tried to push it even further with his Keedoozle stores that followed Piggly Wiggly. In those stores, the items were lined up in what amounted to vending machines with shoppers releasing an item from the vertical row with a key.
Here Saunders went too far. He mashed the bread.

30. Terminix, CDS to Hold Job Fairs Wednesday -

A pair of job fairs on Wednesday, Jan. 20, is giving Memphis-area job seekers two chances to meet with potential employers.

Memphis-based pest-control company Terminix will hold its job event Wednesday from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. at 6399 Shelby Oaks Drive. The company, a division of ServiceMaster Global Holdings, is seeking to fill 120 positions at its Memphis call center over the next six months, with new hire classes starting at the beginning of each month. The full-time customer service positions pay $11 an hour.

Pinnacle Financial Partners is continuing to expand its ranks in Memphis.

The latest addition is a team from Cadence Bank that will accelerate Pinnacle’s commercial and industrial lending in the city and is based at Pinnacle’s Memphis headquarters on Quail Hollow Road.

32. City Council Votes On Countrywood Development -

Among the planning and development items the Memphis City Council votes on Tuesday, Jan. 19, is a residential planned development at the end of Countrywood Parkway south of Interstate 40.

The 163 acres of land include 48 acres of conservation agriculture land.

33. US Stocks Rebound a Day After Plunge, Led by Energy Sector -

The major U.S. stock indexes veered higher in afternoon trading, recovering from an early slide. Energy companies led the rally, climbing along with the price of crude oil. The gains came a day after the market had its worst drop since September. Exxon Mobil and Chevron each jumped about 5 percent, by far the largest gains in the Dow Jones industrial average.

Stocks fell sharply in late afternoon trading Wednesday as a dismal start to the new year got even worse. The selling was concentrated on some of the biggest winners from last year such as Netflix and Amazon, both of which doubled in value in 2015.

A slump in crude oil prices and other commodities weighed on stocks in afternoon trading Monday. Energy companies were among the biggest decliners as the price of crude oil sank to the lowest level in more than a decade. Investors also weighed the implications of another drop in China's stock market.

39. US Employers Hire at Robust Pace, Defying Global Trends -

WASHINGTON (AP) — The U.S. economy is motoring ahead despite slowing global growth that caused upheavals in financial markets around the world this week.

Employers added a robust 292,000 jobs last month, and the unemployment rate stayed low at 5 percent, the Labor Department said Friday. Job gains in the October-December quarter averaged 284,000, the best three-month increase since last January.

The 605,000-square-foot Pilot Distribution Center in Southeast Memphis has sold for $11.9 million.

Sealy Strategic Equity Partners LP, working as Sealy Pilot LLC, purchased the industrial warehouse at 4221 Pilot Drive from Pilot Distribution Center Inc. on Dec. 22, according to a warranty deed.

41. 7-Building Century Center Sells For $48.3 Million -

A light industrial business park in Northeast Memphis has sold for $48.3 million.

Boston-based Taurus Investment Holdings LLC acquired the seven-building Century Center Business Park on Dec. 30 from GID Investment Advisers, which had owned it for a decade. Miami-based Holliday Fenoglio Fowler LP marketed the park on behalf of GID.

A light industrial business park in Northeast Memphis has sold for $48.3 million.

Memphis-based nexAir, one of the largest distributors of atmospheric gasses and welding supplies in the U.S., has kicked off 2016 with a big expansion of its footprint.

The company is merging 23 Praxair Distribution Southeast LLC (PDSE) branches in Florida and southeast Georgia into its operation. That Praxair entity is also becoming a wholly owned subsidiary of nexAir, and the current nexAir management team will lead the overall venture.

47. US Manufacturing Shrinks for 2nd Month Amid Global Slowdown -

WASHINGTON (AP) — U.S. manufacturers contracted in December at the fastest pace in more than six years as factories cut jobs and new orders shrank.

The Institute for Supply Management said Monday that its index of factory activity fell to 48.2 from 48.6 in November. Any reading under 50 signals contraction.

The Irvine, Calif.-based company is a provider of global supply chain managed solutions for point of purchase displays, and like its other facilities, the Memphis plant depends on staffing agencies to fill its fluctuating needs. OSI’s leaders saw an opportunity to provide jobs to single mothers, who often need work flexibility to deal with their children’s constantly changing schedules.

The development company that wanted to build a speculative industrial park on the former Mall of Memphis site has sold the property instead.

Johnson Development Associates, Inc., acting as Memphis Industrial Properties, LLC, has unloaded the Mall of Memphis land in a Dec. 29 warranty deed.

98. Public Housing Site Approved For Municipal Complex -

The razed site of the Walter J. Simmons public housing development at Lamar Avenue and Knight Arnold Road gained approval to be rezoned from residential to municipal/industrial use.

At a Oct. 28 meeting of the Board of Adjustment, chairman Frank Colvett said in his approval of the rezoning that,“The good part about this site is that it hasn’t been used. It’s being developed because we are combining our services so there’s an economy of efficiency and we can create a campus-like environment.”

99. St. Jude to Build Data Center -

St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital has released plans for its new three-story data center at the northeast corner of St. Jude Place and the Danny Thomas Boulevard overpass.

The 60,600-square-foot building is planned for the four-acre lot that American Lebanese Syrian Associated Charities, the fundraising arm of St. Jude, purchased in March.
