Gang cases in Memphis Federal Court are fairly common. Federal gang cases in which murder or attempted murder to further a criminal enterprise is among the charges are not common.

The last case to surface was also the largest drug case ever brought in Memphis Federal Court. It was the 2008 case against Craig Petties and his multi-state drug operation with direct ties to the Sinaloa drug cartel.

4. Hickory Hill Warehouses Sell for $27 Million -

Two industrial buildings in the Midway Distribution Center in Hickory Hill have sold for a combined price of $27 million.

The larger Building C warehouse went for $19.7 million. In an April 20 warranty deed, LBP Midway C LLC sold the property to Exeter 4550 S. Mendenhall LLC.

As a potentially damaging deannexation bill moves to the state Senate for a possible vote soon, city officials are considering options to combat the expected loss of revenue should the bill pass.

Memphis Mayor Jim Strickland estimates the state deannexation law could cost City Hall $27.7 million on the low end but as much as $80 million if all Memphis annexations dating back to 1998 were negated by voters in those areas.

A Chinese company has selected Memphis to be its first manufacturing site in the U.S., bringing more than 100 jobs and $4.2 million in local taxes.

At a Wednesday, Nov. 18, meeting of the Memphis-Shelby County Economic Development Growth Engine, the board approved an eight-year abatement in property taxes for DunAn Precision Inc. The tax break amounts to a total savings of $2.1 million.

A Hickory Hill nightclub where undercover police officers allegedly bought marijuana – and with a history of recent violence including a murder – remained closed as the week began.

A-Game Bar and Grill, 6642 Winchester Road, near Kirby Parkway, was closed under terms of a court order from General Sessions Environmental Court Judge Larry Potter declaring it a nuisance.

A Los Angeles-based real estate investment company has acquired two Memphis apartment complexes for $17 million.

LMREC CDO I Reo XI Inc., which is affiliated with L.A.-based Latitude Management Real Estate Investors Inc., bought the 300-unit apartment complex at 5246 Raleigh Lagrange Road from MPI English Village LLC, which is affiliated with Atlanta-based Miles Properties Inc., for $9.2 million, according to a Feb. 23 special warranty deed in lieu of foreclosure.

A Minnesota-based real estate investment trust has acquired a large Memphis industrial portfolio for $86.3 million, one of the largest transactions ever recorded in the Memphis market.

Welsh Property Trust acquired the six-building, 2.3 million-square-foot portfolio from DCT Industrial Trust in a sale that was finalized last week. Built between 1998 and 2001, the six buildings are located in the Eastpark, Chickasaw and Southpoint Industrial Parks. The purchase price breaks down to about $37 per square foot.

2005: Molson Coors Brewing Co. announced it would close its Memphis brewery in Hickory Hill in 2007 as a result of the Canadian company’s merger with Adolph Coors Co. of Colorado. At the time, the brewery and bottling plant employed 410 people. The phase-out was to begin in the second half of 2005. Today the brewery is known as Blues City Brewery, a part of City Brewing of Latrobe, Wis., producing beers and other beverages under numerous brand names.

The Shelby County Clerk’s Office was busier in 2014, with 5,847 business licenses issued – a 9.1 percent increase from 2013 when there were 5,361 licenses issued.

The licenses include both new and renewals. The 5,847 total included 5,618 licenses originating in Tennessee, according to The Daily News Online, www.memphisdailynews.com.

94. Fourth-Quarter Bankruptcies Reflect Continued Drop -

Bankruptcies in Shelby County dropped below the 3,000 mark in the last quarter of 2014 after being just above it in the third quarter.

The 2,634 bankruptcies filed from Oct. 1 to Dec. 31 compare to 3,135 filings from July 10 to Sept. 30.

95. Bankruptcies Dip Below 12,000 in 2014 -

Reflecting a national trend, Shelby County recorded a 7 percent drop in bankruptcies in 2014 compared to the previous year.

And the number of bankruptcies across the 33 Shelby County ZIP codes in 2014 was also down from 2013 and 2012 in each of the three types of bankruptcy chapters, according to The Daily News Online, memphisdailynews.com.
