The open field between Third and Seventh streets, south of Cedar Avenue in north Memphis, is surrounded by homes – some that have seen better days and others that are newly built.

Now after more than a decade of building homes on scattered sites one or two at a time, the local Habitat for Humanity chapter this summer will build its first Uptown subdivision. And the community will take the name of a section of North Memphis remembered by long-time residents.

Memphis City Council members delayed approval Tuesday, Nov. 17, of the lease agreement and financing of the Central Station redevelopment project for two weeks. And it also delayed a vote on the Graceland West renovation and expansion.

21. Mixed-Use Midtown Market on Tap for Long-Vacant Corner -

Rumors and speculation have long run rampant about potential development at the southwest corner of Union Avenue and McLean Boulevard, one of Memphis’ busiest intersections.

Some of the speculation involved keeping the eight-story hotel, which was built in the late 1960s, as the central feature of whatever came next. In other scenarios it would be demolished.

22. Grocery, Apartments to Rise at McLean-Union Corner -

Belz Enterprises and Harbour Retail Partners of Marietta, Ga., have a plan to demolish the empty eight-story Artisan Hotel on the southwest corner of Union Avenue and McLean Boulevard.

The project would replace the blighted building with a $43 million mixed-use “Midtown Market” anchored by a “national gourmet grocery store." It also would include 188 apartments: 47 studios; 94 one-bedroom units; and 47 two-bedroom units.

Tim Bolding, executive director of United Housing Inc., is the only Tennessean selected to teach at NeighborWorks America’s 2015 NeighborWorks Training Institute. Bolding has taught coursework at the training institutes, which focus on providing high-quality training to nonprofit housing professionals, for more than 10 years.

Memphis has a crippling issue with blight, and one nonprofit is front and center with changing the culture that led to the city’s inundation of abandoned properties and lots.

Neighborhood Preservation Inc. was founded in 2012 as a court-appointed receiver of properties taken away from neglectful owners. Over the years, it has evolved to become a robust advocate for stronger legislation and development tools to deal with problem properties.

34. Universal Life Building Developers Acquire Key Public Financing -

Developers of the Universal Life Building have received approval for two key pieces of financing and a commitment from the city of Memphis to lease about half of the building.

Self-Tucker Properties LLC won approval Tuesday, April 14, for a nine-year payment-in-lieu-of-taxes agreement from the Center City Revenue Finance Corp. to renovate the building for office use. Architects Jimmie Tucker and Juan Self, principals of Self-Tucker Architects, also gained approval for $2 million in Qualified Energy Conservation Bonds for the project.

Ferris Hall is an unassuming brick building on the edge of the University of Tennessee’s College of Engineering campus and home to the Department of Materials Science Engineering. There, Drs. Ramki Kalyanaraman and Gerd Duscher have opened the door to applying the magic of Hogwarts to military camouflage, cancer treatment or even Halloween costumes for a new generation.

36. Executive Inn Demolition Long Time Coming -

The old Executive Inn hotel on Airways Boulevard where Brooks Road dead ends is the latest problem vacant property to be demolished and touted by Memphis Mayor A C Wharton Jr. as another step in his administration’s anti-blight effort.

Memphis-based Loeb Properties has acquired one of the most venerable locations on the Highland strip.

Loeb purchased the long-time home of club and restaurant Newby’s at 535 and 539 Highland St. from Paragon Bank. A purchase price was not disclosed Friday, Jan. 2.

38. Shelby County Homebuilding Activity Continues to Slow -

Homebuilding in Shelby County was off last year’s pace again in November, with builders pulling fewer permits and selling fewer homes than in November 2013.

Shelby County homebuilders filed 43 permits last month, down 29.5 percent from 61 permits in November 2013, according to real estate information company Chandler Reports, www.chandlerreports.com. The 43 permits filed in November is down 31.7 percent from the 63 permits filed in October.

100. Awards Just One Facet Of Comm. Council -

This year marks a decade of existence for the Memphis Area Association of Realtors’ Commercial Council, the trade organization for the commercial real estate profession and its related sectors.
