When Memphis City Council members were told in an Aug. 22 open committee session about Graceland’s plan to build a 5,000- to 6,000-seat concert venue, it wasn’t the first time local officials heard about the idea.

2. Graceland Sues Over Concert Venue Scrapped By Grizz Noncompete -

Graceland is challenging the noncompete agreement the city and county governments have with the Memphis Grizzlies in a lawsuit filed Wednesday, Nov. 15, in Shelby County Chancery Court.

The lawsuit by Elvis Presley Enterprises Inc. and Guesthouse at Graceland LLC seeks a declaratory judgment against the city of Memphis, Shelby County and Memphis Basketball LLC.

3. Editorial: The 5,000-Seat Noncompete In a Changing Memphis -

The mantra has been clear since Graceland dramatically changed the plans for its proposed Whitehaven concert venue: Almost nobody in officialdom wants to touch the Memphis Grizzlies’ noncompete clause for FedExForum.

More than a few bread crumbs on the direction the Fairgrounds redevelopment proposal is … well, developing after the second of three very important public forums last week by City Hall. The signs indicate a water park or surf park is highly unlikely, the gym at Maxine Smith STEAM Academy would go to open up Central Avenue frontage and a new gym built behind Kroc Center, a hotel by the Children’s Museum and the high school football field and track oval move from Central to where Libertyland used to be. And the city says none of this is set in stone even if it does show up on a tentative site plan among the exhibits last week.

Elvis Presley Enterprises has significantly altered the plans for its new entertainment venue in Whitehaven after the Memphis Grizzlies raised concerns surrounding a noncompete agreement with the city involving FedExForum.

The calendar says fall but the weather says summer and in Arlington the flags and notices say election day. The polls at the two polling places in Arlington open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday in municipal elections – the only regularly scheduled election of 2017 in Shelby County, which in our politics is frequently regarded as an invitation for departures and vacancies in other office that cause the scheduling of special elections. We’ve already had those earlier this year for a spot on the Lakeland commission and a state House seat.

This is essentially federal funding that will reimburse local government for money they spend up front for these kinds of disasters. The state’s request also includes a call for individual assistance to Shelby County homeowners and business owners whose property was damaged in the Memorial Day weekend storms.

For years the Memphis convention and tourism industry has known which comes first in the chicken-and-egg argument about drawing more convention business. More hotel rooms with meeting space take top priority in an environment where there is just enough political will for a $60 million renovation of the Memphis Cook Convention Center but not enough to build and finance a new convention center.

23. Graceland Announces March 2 Opening of 'Elvis Presley's Memphis' Complex -

Graceland will open its $45 million 200,000 square foot Whitehaven entertainment complex March 2-5, the second opening in five months of an expansion of Graceland’s presence in Memphis.

The opening date for the complex of restaurants, museums, shops and performance venues was announced Monday, Nov. 21, by Elvis Presley Enterprises about a month after the opening of the $92-million 450-room Guest House at Graceland hotel and resort.

24. $92M Graceland Hotel Expected to Be a Catalyst for Whitehaven -

The Heartbreak Hotel on Elvis Presley Boulevard was full Wednesday, Oct. 26 – its final night as a hotel.

By the time the $92 million, 450-room Guest House at Graceland resort opened across the boulevard Thursday morning, many of the doors at the Heartbreak Hotel were missing their room numbers – taken as souvenirs by guests who filled the circa-1980s hotel in its final days.

Graceland is in Memphis. But the two have tended to coexist, rather than being part of each other, since Elvis Presley’s home opened as a commercial enterprise in 1982.

That is starting to change as a $137 million expansion of Graceland – a $92 million hotel resort opening in October and a $45 million, 200,000-square-foot entertainment complex west of the mansion to open in the spring of 2017 – begins to overlap with a renewed emphasis on Whitehaven as the home of many of the city’s middle class.

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) – Paisley Park, the private estate and studio complex of the late rock superstar Prince, will open for daily public tours starting Oct. 6, the trust company overseeing his estate announced Wednesday, and the company that runs Elvis Presley's Graceland will manage it.

Are your lights on yet? How is your air conditioning? First came the rain Wednesday night and then came the power outages that stretched into Thursday.

So the last Twitter update from Memphis Light Gas and Water at 8 p.m. Thursday shows 248 outages in the MLGW service area with 2,746 customers still in the dark and the worst heat of the year so far. Those numbers translate to 95 percent of the customers impacted having their power restored Thursday evening.

Elvis Presley Enterprises has taken on a $40 million construction loan to build Graceland West, a 46-acre development to the west of Elvis Presley Boulevard, across from the Graceland mansion. Joel Weinshanker, managing partner of Graceland Holdings LLC and majority owner of Elvis Presley Enterprises, signed as grantor for the loan. Pinnacle Bank is the lender.

38. Elvis' Planes Could Take Flight in New Museum -

Two jets once belonging to Elvis Presley that have been displayed at Graceland for years could be destined for a museum, if the group that owns the planes has its way.

OKC Partnership, which owns the Lisa Marie and Hound Dog II jets, has applied to the Office of Planning and Development for a planned development to allow a museum featuring Elvis Presley’s airplanes at 3850 Elvis Presley Blvd. The museum would be located on a vacant lot that was formerly home to Covenant Presbyterian Church.
