Shelby County elections administrator Linda Phillips has been watching the ebb and flow of petitions for the 2018 elections and has found what she believes is a link to the weather. “Apparently when the dreaded ‘snow’ word is mentioned in the forecast, not only do people go out and clear the shelves of milk, bread and eggs. They also decide to pick up a petition,” she wrote in an email with the list of who has pulled and who has filed in the last two days.

8. Industrial Market Closes 2017 With Strong Q4 -

The Memphis industrial market finished the year strong by adding almost 1 million square feet of net absorption in the fourth quarter, bringing the 2017 total to more than 4.3 million square feet.

It also marked the 18th consecutive quarter of positive net absorption for the Memphis market, capping off a more than four-year span that has seen more than 23 million square feet of space absorbed, according to brokerage firm CBRE’s Q4 Industrial MarketView report.

11. DHL Planning New Memphis Distribution Facility -

International shipping giant DHL Supply Chain is planning a massive new development just north of the Tennessee-Mississippi state line.

The global logistics division of Germany’s Deutsche Post DHL Group is looking to build a 580,000-square-foot distribution facility on 55 acres of vacant land east of Tchulahoma Road and west of Meltech Boulevard on the northern border of the state line.

The developers of a $24 million Overton Square hotel and a Canadian elevator company looking to build its first U.S. facility in Memphis have been awarded tax incentives to move ahead with their projects.

18. Shelby County Road Projects on TDOT’s List -

Gov. Bill Haslam’s proposed IMPROVE Act would raise the state fuel tax and cut other state taxes to raise funds for a backlog of road and infrastructure projects across the state.

The Tennessee Department of Transportation’s project list contains 20 projects for Shelby County, work the state is committed to doing but has not funded. The Shelby County projects include:

Tennessee Gov. Bill Haslam has appointed eight business leaders, including a former University of Memphis interim president and the CEO of J.C. Penney Co., to the newly formed governing board of the University of Memphis.

20. Bursting the Bubble -

Graceland is in Memphis. But the two have tended to coexist, rather than being part of each other, since Elvis Presley’s home opened as a commercial enterprise in 1982.

That is starting to change as a $137 million expansion of Graceland – a $92 million hotel resort opening in October and a $45 million, 200,000-square-foot entertainment complex west of the mansion to open in the spring of 2017 – begins to overlap with a renewed emphasis on Whitehaven as the home of many of the city’s middle class.

2006: Shelby County’s reliance on manufacturing jobs is dropping, according to state labor figures, which show that 14 manufacturing companies have closed or cut back their workforces in Shelby County since January 2003. The closings and cutbacks account for the loss of 1,240 jobs.
The losses include 98 jobs at Coors Brewing Co., 5151 East Raines Road; 112 workers at Memphis Hardwood Flooring Co., 1551 Thomas St.; and 327 employees at Great Dane LP at 1095 Harbor Ave.

A New Mexico-based firm has acquired a Southeast Memphis warehouse for $2.4 million.

Westmeath LLC, which lists an address in Albuquerque, N.M., acquired the 33,190-square-foot warehouse at 4339 S. Mendenhall Road from SE Industrial Investments LLC, according to a March 30 warranty deed. William Preston Thomas Jr. signed the deed for the seller, SE Industrial Investments LLC.

A New Jersey-based investor has acquired a Memphis industrial property for $1.1 million.

E. Raines 4949 LLC, which lists a mailing address in Lakewood, N.J., acquired the 182,136-square-foot warehouse at 4949 E. Raines Road from Missouri-based MHB LLC, according to a March 19 warranty deed.

For Clyde “Kit” Carson, the road to becoming Shelby County Jury commissioner began when he was 16 years old and looking for as much time driving a car as possible.

Then-Circuit Court Clerk Clint Crabtree, who attended the same church as Carson, hired him to work in his campaign. When Carson turned 18, Crabtree hired him to work in the office. He began as a runner retrieving files from the basement of the Shelby County Courthouse.

Kroger has acquired the Belvedere Apartments in Midtown as part of a long-term project to reconfigure the grocery store’s antiquated and challenged layout.

A Class B warehouse in Airport Industrial Park has sold for $2.3 million, more than four times its price at a foreclosure sale two years ago. Northbrook, Ill.-based BCL-Memphis LLC bought the warehouse at 4049 E. Raines Road from Memphis-based Progression Realty, which paid $501,500 for it in August 2010.
