NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) – An ex-Tennessee teacher who fled with a 15-year-old student last year and set off a 39-day nationwide manhunt has asked to change his plea in federal court.

A document filed by his lawyer Thursday in federal court in Nashville says 51-year-old Tad Cummins wants to change his previous not-guilty plea. It says he "would like to enter a plea of guilty."

Tad Cummins filed paperwork with a federal court in Nashville saying he will plead not guilty to charges of taking a minor across state lines for sex, and obstruction of justice. The 50-year-old teacher waived the right to make the plea in person at an arraignment scheduled for Thursday.

Through September, things were looking somewhat bleak for Memphis and Shelby County on the economic development front.

At that point in the year the city and county were on pace to tie a record low for the number of payments-in-lieu-of-taxes, or PILOT, agreements granted to companies in a year. While granting fewer tax incentives could be viewed as good news because companies were more fiscally sound or confident about operating in Memphis and Shelby County, the lower level of activity represented a dip in the level of economic investment in the area.

Two companies won approval Wednesday, Dec. 17, for tax incentives for projects that will create around 1,400 jobs.

In October, Old Dominion Freight Line Inc. opened the door, or 267 doors to be more precise, on its new $30 million service center in Memphis.

The tag “Hip Donelson” evoked plenty of snickers, eye rolls and snarky comments when it first appeared. After all, the local joke goes, Donelson’s known for hip replacements – not hipsters.

Cummins Inc. is eyeing a Memphis property for a planned expansion of the company’s distribution operations, a move that would be welcome news for Memphis officials.

Economic development and the quality of jobs coming to Shelby County are the dominant issues as county elected leaders begin a new four-year term of office this month.

And there are plenty of indications the local strategy is about to change, or at least shift, in response to the resurgence in manufacturing and distribution in North Mississippi.

Memphis and Shelby County are preparing to fight a border battle with Mississippi to keep hundreds of jobs inside the city.

The state of Mississippi is aggressively courting diesel engine manufacturer Cummins Inc. to move most of its Memphis operations south of the state line to DeSoto County, according to sources familiar with the effort.

Dr. Dan T. Meadows has been appointed to the Tennessee Board of Dentistry by Gov. Bill Haslam. Meadows, who has a private practice on Walnut Grove Road, will serve as the Rotating Dentist member through June 2016.

A different kind of Detroit comparison was made in the Mississippi Delta this week.

It’s a comparison to Detroit’s golden age as the center of the U.S auto industry instead of its later decline and recent fiscal insolvency.

Memphis area commercial real estate brokers were not only brought up to speed on the latest numbers and trends Thursday, Feb. 7, at the Memphis Area Association of Realtors Commercial Property Forecast Summit – they were also briefed on how to tweak their marketing strategy to recruit business by a former executive with the Federal Reserve.

Last year President Barack Obama announced an “all-hands-on-deck strategy” to train 10,000 new American engineers every year.

WASHINGTON (AP) – Fewer people applied for unemployment benefits last week, the second drop in a row and a hopeful sign the job market could be improving.
