Last Word: The Heat and The Memphis Identity and Stackhouse to Grizz -
Monday, June 11, 2018
What is it that draws us to social events outside when it is this hot? This is a topic where the specifics counsel against generalities. So it could be argued that the beckoning of summer heat – pre-summer heat in this case – that smothers you after greeting you like a brick wall at any door opening is an indication of the degree to which you are of Memphis.

For some of you this is not the week before the week before Christmas. It is Star Wars week, as the latest sequel in the sci-fi series begins its run in theaters across the country. Along those lines, there is a social media slide show of 1970s images of George Lucas telling the story of what an uphill climb the original Star Wars was – the making and the distribution. And around Planet Memphis, the premiere certainly wasn’t that big a deal. There was an advance screening at the old Memphian theater – now the Circuit Playhouse – that didn’t draw a whole lot of attention.

Last Word: Carson Cancels, Haslam Endorses, Bank Numbers and Kobe's Exit -
Friday, February 26, 2016
Presidential campaigns and the security concerns that come with them aren’t something that comes up a lot in terms of press coverage in this election cycle.
But it has come up leading into what will be a busy weekend locally and in the region among the presidential contenders.
Republican candidate Ben Carson was scheduled to attend both Sunday services at Highpoint Church in East Memphis.
Leaders of the church emphasized it was a non-political event in which Carson would talk about his personal story and his faith but would not make a political pitch.
This is not unprecedented.
In 2008, Republican contender Mike Huckabee attended an ordination ceremony for two ministers at Bellevue Baptist Church in Cordova – an event that was billed also as a nonpolitical event.
And so the reporters who came to cover the candidate who would win the Tennessee Republican primary days later watched not from the sanctuary but from the room where Bellevue’s video and audio feeds are coordinated. Huckabee talked politics with reporters after the service as he made a run for some barbecue to-go from Corky’s on his way to another city on the campaign trail.

Or maybe it would be appropriate to have a weather map that includes the Groundhog Day immunity zones – areas where the long shadow of the groundhog does not venture.
Note to television meteorologists: This would in no way interfere with your right to declare large parts of your viewing areas as places of "potentially severe weather" far into the future. But you will need a different color for the Groundhog Immunity Zones.
