Vibrant Hotels Inc., an affiliate of Batesville, Mississippi-based development company JVD Enterprises, is seeking a special use permit that would allow the conversion of the century-old Tenoke, located at 161 Jefferson Ave., and the adjacent one-story office at 191 Jefferson Ave. into an “upper-brand franchised full-service hotel,” according to an application filed with the city-county Office of Planning and Development in August.

The Heartbreak Hotel on Elvis Presley Boulevard was full Wednesday, Oct. 26 – its final night as a hotel.

By the time the $92 million, 450-room Guest House at Graceland resort opened across the boulevard Thursday morning, many of the doors at the Heartbreak Hotel were missing their room numbers – taken as souvenirs by guests who filled the circa-1980s hotel in its final days.

Belz Enterprises has taken a major step in the renovation of the shuttered Peabody Place mall into ServiceMaster Global Holdings’ future headquarters.

21. Bursting the Bubble -

Graceland is in Memphis. But the two have tended to coexist, rather than being part of each other, since Elvis Presley’s home opened as a commercial enterprise in 1982.

That is starting to change as a $137 million expansion of Graceland – a $92 million hotel resort opening in October and a $45 million, 200,000-square-foot entertainment complex west of the mansion to open in the spring of 2017 – begins to overlap with a renewed emphasis on Whitehaven as the home of many of the city’s middle class.

24. Last Word: Candlelight Protest, International Paper Rumors and Ruby Wilson -

Graceland and Black Lives Matter meet again Monday evening, according to the announcement as the weekend began of the Coalition of Concerned Citizens.

The coalition, which includes leaders of the July 10 bridge protest as well as the July 12 protest that briefly blocked traffic on Elvis Presley Boulevard outside Graceland, isn’t too happy with how its meeting with Mayor Jim Strickland went last Thursday.

25. Whitehaven’s Big Week Moves Needle on Long-Held Development Plans -

The land has been cleared for quite a while where apartment complexes once stood and a big back parking lot was. You can see parts of it from the steps of Graceland.

On Monday, Aug. 15, the day that Elvis fans mark the anniversary of his death with a candlelight vigil, leaders of Elvis Presley Enterprises will announce more details of the $45 million, 200,000-square-foot Graceland West project.

For the first time in years, the Peabody Place mall was packed. On June 3, hundreds of ServiceMaster employees and a handful of business and government leaders ushered in One ServiceMaster Center, a multimillion-dollar headquarters for Memphis’ fourth-largest public company.

ServiceMaster Global Holdings Inc. will be getting a lot of help with its headquarters move into the vacant Peabody Place mall.

Documents obtained by The Daily News show that mall landlord Belz Enterprises will contribute $12 million to improvements to the facility while ServiceMaster will invest $14.8 million in converting the 340,000-square-foot retail center into corporate offices with open working and research spaces.

On Friday, June 3, ServiceMaster laid to rest months of speculation about whether the company would relocate to a larger city like Atlanta or Dallas. Memphis’ available Class A office space can’t currently accommodate ServiceMaster’s needs, so it looked to the retail sector for its new home.

Dr. Guy Reed’s Memphis-based medical startup hit a big milestone toward the end of 2015, when Japanese pharmaceutical company Daiichi Sankyo reached a deal to license the company’s technology.

It looks like the dry rub will be in order for Memphis in May's barbecue weekend with a shower or two keeping the dust down in Tom Lee Park Wednesday.

If you can see it through the smoke, Mud Island might strike a first-tme observer as a marked contrast to all of the activity in Tom Lee Park that goes right up to the bluff's edge.

57. Legislators Playing Expensive Game With LGBT Issues -

The silly season is in full swing on Capitol Hill, but the “bathroom bill” and any jokes surrounding it are no laughing matter anymore. It’s getting downright expensive.

Tennessee Attorney General Herbert Slatery said this week the bill dealing with transgender student use of restrooms could cost the state more than $1.2 billion in federal funds for K-12 and higher education.

The Memphis development community is looking inward and upward to increase density in the urban core. New construction is happening across all four commercial real estate sectors, with long-anticipated projects like Trader Joe’s and the redevelopment of Central Station finally coming to fruition. Construction and operating costs continue to be a challenge as new projects hit the top of their class to command higher rents.

Before Lakeland became a city, it was the Lakeland Amusement Park. A California-based developer is bringing back that original flair with his proposal for The Lake District, a 165-acre mixed-use development.

77. City Council to Vote on Idlewild Gate, Water Rate Hike -

A gate across Idlewild Street between two competing supermarket projects in Midtown tops the Memphis City Council’s next-to-last meeting of the year.

The council is to vote Tuesday, Dec. 1, on a resolution that would close Idlewild south of Union Avenue to vehicular traffic and install a gate. The reason, according to the resolution, is to prevent motorists coming from Union Avenue and the two developments from cutting through the residential area.

78. Memphis City Council Heads For Rocky End Of Term -

With only two meetings left, Memphis City Council members are on their way toward what looks to be a rocky end of their four-year term of office together.

Memphis City Council members vote Tuesday, Nov. 17, on Elvis Presley Enterprises’ plan to redevelop Graceland Plaza into an entertainment complex.

The 46-acre complex, located on the west side of Elvis Presley Boulevard, will include two restaurants, a soundstage, new retail development and two new museums, including a car museum.

Memphis Mayor-elect Jim Strickland announced Wednesday, Oct. 21, that he has named 26 people to eight committees that are the structure of his transition committee.

The transition committee members were chosen by Strickland along with the three co-chairs of the transition committee.

88. Timberlake Remarks Show Generational Change in Music Heritage -

Memphis music heritage, and the remembrance of it, turned an important corner Saturday, Oct. 17, when Justin Timberlake walked on stage at the Cannon Center for the Performing Arts.

Timberlake, 34, is the youngest inductee into the Memphis Music Hall of Fame.

89. New Tax Breaks Attract Grocers to Memphis Food Deserts -

Two of Memphis’ prominent food deserts are on the mend with possible tax breaks to attract grocery stores.

Binghampton and Uptown are set to receive Community Builder PILOTs, a new payment-in-lieu-of-taxes incentive granted by the Memphis and Shelby County Economic Development Growth Engine.

90. DMC Eyes More PILOTs for ‘High-Impact’ Development -

The proposed Midtown mixed-use development at McLean Boulevard and Union Avenue has turned a corner with newly approved tax breaks.

On Tuesday, Oct. 13, the Center City Revenue Finance Corp., an affiliate board of the Downtown Memphis Commission, approved a 15-year payment-in-lieu-of-taxes incentive to support the residential, retail and grocery project.

91. Mixed-Use Midtown Market on Tap for Long-Vacant Corner -

Rumors and speculation have long run rampant about potential development at the southwest corner of Union Avenue and McLean Boulevard, one of Memphis’ busiest intersections.

Some of the speculation involved keeping the eight-story hotel, which was built in the late 1960s, as the central feature of whatever came next. In other scenarios it would be demolished.

92. Grocery, Apartments to Rise at McLean-Union Corner -

Belz Enterprises and Harbour Retail Partners of Marietta, Ga., have a plan to demolish the empty eight-story Artisan Hotel on the southwest corner of Union Avenue and McLean Boulevard.

The project would replace the blighted building with a $43 million mixed-use “Midtown Market” anchored by a “national gourmet grocery store." It also would include 188 apartments: 47 studios; 94 one-bedroom units; and 47 two-bedroom units.

93. Taser Contract Controversy Endures As Election Day Nears -

As the city of Memphis closed in on buying body cameras and other associated technology for its police department, the inner circle around Memphis Mayor A C Wharton was concerned.

They were concerned that Taser International, the camera supplier the city had picked, wasn’t getting close to the goal the city had set of at least 10 percent participation by minority- and women-owned business enterprises – MWBEs – in the total project spend.
