1. Fall Creek Falls Project Leaves Destructive Trail -

The Fall Creek Falls Inn and Conference Center will soon be in ruins like the livelihoods of the state employees who worked there.

Fewer than half the state employees who worked at the inn found new state jobs after it closed in early April. Some are working for nearly half the pay, and some had to move away from Van Buren County or drive long distances to keep a job with the state.

A golf club is not unlike a garden. It needs tending. Fairways, greens, bunkers – they all need attention. But so do the members, who have many choices throughout the Memphis area and want to feel like their presence matters no matter how low – or high – of a score they shoot.

3. Unwilling Private Sector Gives Park Workers a Victory -

Two state parks are celebrating victories in an atmosphere of uncertainty created by the governor’s penchant for privatizing state functions.

Fall Creek Falls drew no bidders for a $20 million plan to hire a vendor who would tear down its inn, construct a new one and take over operations for 10 years. Henry Horton State Park, meanwhile, is set for $10 million in improvements this coming fiscal year, including upgrades to its hospitality facilities, plus a new visitors center, rather than a proposal to raze its inn and not rebuild.

4. Mahaffey Tent & Event Rentals: All Grown Up, Flexing Creative Muscle -

The beginning of Mahaffey Tent & Event Rentals goes all the back to 1924, when three brothers – Owen, Gene and Earl Mahaffey – got their start making awnings, canvas tarpaulins and cotton pick sacks.

When it comes to residential real estate around Middle Tennessee, there are plenty of buyers but not nearly enough sellers, says Heather Benjamin with Reliant Realty’s Benjamin McConnell Group. And new construction just can’t keep up with the demand.

Time was, crossing Lower Broadway safely only meant dodging woozy country music fans, speeding cabs and the occasional errant tour bus.

Now that global entertainment icon Justin Timberlake and his family have sold their happy local retreat, Mirimichi Golf Course, to a local group for $500,000, the new owners have an opportunity to increase the number of holes and tournaments played at the course, which underwent a massive $16 million renovation.

Vantage Point Holdings LLC has filed a $1.5 million loan to build Vantage Point Golf Center – a driving range and 3,600-square-foot clubhouse – on Macon Road near Big Orange Road in the Grays Creek floodplain in Cordova. The limited liability company closed on the property and financed it in the past week, said the LLC’s manager/owner, Chris Thompson.

Mirimichi LLC – an entity related to entertainer Justin Timberlake’s Millington golf course of the same name – recently received and financed property on Woodstock Hills Drive near the golf course.

17. Mirimichi to Build Performance Center -

Mirimichi golf course near Millington – the facility owned by megastar and Memphis native Justin Timberlake and his family – soon will begin work on the Callaway Performance Center, according to a $1.3 million building permit filed this week with the city-county Office of Construction Code Enforcement.

Justin Timberlake might be best known for hit records, dance moves and sold-out concerts, but the 28-year-old entertainer extraordinaire is much more than a singer/dancer/performer. 22. Big Creek Golf LLC Buys Millington Land -

The new owners of Big Creek Golf Course in Millington have acquired 22 lots and some land in the Woodstock Hill Subdivision adjacent to the golf course at 6195 Woodstock-Cuba Road. Big Creek Golf LLC paid $1.2 million for the lots and land, buying it July 28 from Tapp Enterprises Inc.

First, they saved it from the auction block last fall. Now, an ownership group that includes entertainer Justin Timberlake is seeking to transform a 303-acre golf course property south of Millington into a facility built to design standards unmatched in Tennessee and in few places elsewhere in the world.
