5. Last Word: The Bucc Falls, Lakeland Demolition and Crossing The Year Mark -

Late word Sunday that Bernal Smith II, the president and publisher of the New Tri-State Defender, died at his home Sunday. Smith was a part of the reporters roundtables we do from time to time on "Behind The Headlines." He brought back the city's legacy African-American-owned newspaper and in that role over the last seven years was a big voice in the reshaping of Memphis as a media market. He put reporters back on the streets of this city to cover Memphis and its issues in an independent way that make this a much richer and more competitive media market than it has been in quite some time. Editorially, he was a strong voice on numerous issues and he spoke from the experience of growing up in this city. He was 45 years old and here at The Daily News, those of us who came to know him and work with him on the show express our condolences to his family.

This is a follow up to the Board of Adjustment decision last month to delay any action on approving the other annexes of the business for 30 days.

12. Report: Centralize System for Indigent Counsel -

There should be one central statewide data and reporting system for how the poor are represented in civil and criminal matters in Tennessee, according to a state task force that reported its findings Monday, April 10, to the Tennessee Supreme Court.

13. Sit-In Protests Get First Historical Marker -

Nobody kept count until Jet magazine came to Memphis in 1965 to feature a group of seven sisters the influential magazine billed as “the most arrested family” in the country.

With a picture of the seven Lee sisters, the magazine said Lee family members have “been arrested 17 times for civil rights activities.”

Graceland and Black Lives Matter meet again Monday evening, according to the announcement as the weekend began of the Coalition of Concerned Citizens.

The coalition, which includes leaders of the July 10 bridge protest as well as the July 12 protest that briefly blocked traffic on Elvis Presley Boulevard outside Graceland, isn’t too happy with how its meeting with Mayor Jim Strickland went last Thursday.

At the end of March with much secrecy, Rev. Keith Norman took delivery and responsibility for a large, heavy crate that stayed in his office for the next month.

“Don’t tell anybody, don’t let anybody get it, if they come in and say they work for the park commission or anybody, tell them to show identification,” were the instructions said Norman, who is president of the Memphis Branch NAACP.

Two young developers are filling a niche by renovating, redoing, building and selling homes in the core of the city.

Griffin Elkington and Brian Green, principals of Elkington Green, are focusing on established areas of Memphis such as Crestview, Midtown, High Point and the University of Memphis area where residential properties have maintained a similar feel for generations.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) – A top Republican supporter of a bill to strip local governments of the power to bar handgun carry permit holders from being armed in parks, playgrounds and ball fields said Thursday that even if a school uses a park, playground or ball field for just one event per year, that would enable the school to ban guns there.

47. FedEx Decides Not to Renew a Renaissance Center Lease -

FedEx has decided not to renew a lease at a prominent East Memphis office building.

FedEx Services is not renewing a roughly 11,000-square-foot lease at the 189,644-square-foot Renaissance Center office building at 1715 Aaron Brenner Drive that expires Oct. 1. Employees affected by the decision will be moved to FedEx facilities, part of a broader consolidation and efficiency plan the company has been pursuing.

48. Beale Street Begins Charging Security Fee -

MEMPHIS (AP) – Beale Street has instituted a policy that increases safety by charging visitors a new fee.

WMC-TV reports visitors arriving at midnight Saturday or later had to pay a $10 charge to get past a security checkpoint and onto the iconic street in Memphis. The station reports the special event cover charge paid for 23 extra security officers.

49. Health Choice Selects Abisch to Lead Population Health Services -

Ellen Abisch has joined Health Choice LLC as senior director of population health services. In the newly created position, Abisch will be responsible for designing, implementing and managing population health and wellness programs for the Health Choice network.
Prior to joining the physician hospital organization, she served as manager of benefits and wellness for ServiceMaster.

66. Square's History as Varied as it's Buildings -

The idea of changing Overton Square may be controversial, but in its 40-year history, the entertainment district has been all about change of one kind or another.

The square's founders – none older than 25 but all with a knowledge of how businesses were financed – undertook a bold transformation of a set of pre-World War II storefronts along the border between the Munson Park and Trimbleton subdivisions.

67. Gun Laws are Getting Looser Across Much of US -

69. Houston Appointed by Governor To State Court Reporting Board -

Earl W. Houston II, a member of Martin, Tate, Morrow & Marston PC’s litigation section, was appointed recently to the newly formed Tennessee Board of Court Reporting by Gov. Phil Bredesen.

The Tennessee General Assembly established the board earlier this year. The seven-member board is charged with overseeing and maintaining a standard of competency for court reporters. The board also establishes professional qualifications and issues licenses for court reporters. Houston is the only Memphian on the board.

73. High-Dollar Deal Boosts Commercial Real Estate -

Following what has become a pattern, the local commercial real estate market in September was salvaged by one large deal that offset an otherwise dreary month.

This time it was Resource Real Estate Inc. to the rescue. The Philadelphia-based company bought the Wyndridge Apartments for $9.5 million Sept. 29 and carried the weight for Shelby County’s commercial activity during the month.

BAR II LLC has bought a Mapco Express portfolio for a combined $1.2 million from Mapco Express Inc. The sales closed Sept. 24 in special warranty deeds. Quitclaim deeds also were filed for the properties, which are at 6859 U.S. 70 (Summer Avenue) in Bartlett and 2980 Broad Ave. in the Rhodes College area.

Whitney King Fogerty has joined Jackson Lewis LLP as of counsel.

Fogerty was previously a shareholder at Ogletree, Deakins, Nash, Smoak & Stewart PC, where she specialized in labor and employment litigation. She has practiced law for 10 years and has been named among Chambers USA’s Leading Lawyers for Business the past two years.

78. Former MBA President, Attorney Goff Dies -

Memphis attorney Marvin C. Goff Jr. died last week at age 93 at Ave Maria Home. Goff was president of the Memphis Bar Association in 1965.

79. Robilio Takes Helm of Bar Auxiliary -

Victor Robilio Jr. has been elected as the first male president in the Memphis Bar Auxiliary’s history. But that’s not all he has on his plate.

The Memphis Bar Association will hold a free legal clinic Saturday from 9 a.m. to noon at Friendship United Methodist Church, 6220 U.S. 51 N. The clinic is free and open to the public and provides attendees with an opportunity to talk to an experienced attorney. Attorneys will see individuals on a first-come, first-served basis.

81. Awards, Accolades Help Caraway Strive for Professional Betterment -

Kirk Caraway, a partner at Allen, Summers, Simpson, Lillie & Gresham PLLC, earlier this month received the Memphis Bar Association’s Sam A. Myar Jr. Award. He also recently was selected as a “Rising Star” in the field of labor and employment litigation by Law & Politics Mid-South SuperLawyers 2008. This award is limited to attorneys 40 years old and younger.

85. Bogatin Well-Liked In Law Community -

The Memphis law community recently lost one of its most well-known and well-liked lawyers.

Irvin Bogatin, founder of The Bogatin Law Firm, passed away June 30 at the age of 92. He leaves a wife, Nancy, and two children, Mark and Elizabeth.

86. Bar Internship Introduces Law To Students -

The courtroom where the Tennessee Supreme Court convenes when it is in Memphis was packed earlier this month. And to some on that warm late spring morning, the crowd seemed a bit young.

Shelby County Mayor A C Wharton Jr. even mistook a few practicing attorneys as part of the group of 100 teenagers who are part of the Memphis Bar Association’s 2008 Summer Law Intern Program. The MBA’s Diversity Committee started the initiative a year ago to interest minority students in exploring careers in the law.

Someday soon, while sitting in your lawyer's waiting room, you'll be able to brush up on local history.

The Memphis Bar Association is sponsoring the publication of an updated history of its own, an exhaustive tome with hundreds of photos, a 70,000-word story and in-depth profiles of local law firms.

92. Hugueley Named Chief Nursing Officer For Methodist Extended Care Hospital -

Sandra Hugueley has been named chief nursing officer for Methodist Extended Care Hospital (MECH). Hugueley joined Methodist in 1996 as a registered nurse and became nurse manager of Medical-Surgical ICU at Methodist North Hospital in 1997. She recently served as corporate director of Interim Administrative Services.

Davidson Moving Its Headquarters -      Davidson Hotel Co. will relocate its corporate headquarters to Southwind near Hacks Cross Road and Tournament Drive in East Memphis from its current location at 1755 Lynnfield Road, company officials announced Monday.94. Alan Crone, attorney and co-founder of Crone & Mason PLC, has been named a fellow of the Memphis Bar Foundation. The appointment was made at the annual joint meeting of the Memphis Bar Association and its charitable arm, the Memphis Bar Foundation, Sept. 11.
