5. Binghampton’s Diverse Culture On Display at Kaleidoscope Festival -

With nearly 20 nationalities calling Binghampton home, the neighborhood possibly is the most culturally diverse in Memphis.

That diversity will be celebrated Saturday, April 15, at Wiseacre Brewing Co. with Kaleidoscope, a multicultural food festival that will present a variety of food entrepreneurs serving up unique goodness from their homes. The food festival is the culmination of work over the past year to support refugee and immigrant food entrepreneurs in the Binghampton community.

8. Last Word: The Catechism of 1968, Downtown Hotels and Earth Day on Auto Row -

What happened 49 years ago this week in our city began long before the first sanitation worker walked off the job or the first “I Am A Man” sign was made. Maybe it was that long arc that explains the timing of what happened here in late March into the first week of April of 1968. For just about half a century now we have thought and thought again about that chronology, reviewed the details. And what we have is a sort of catechism of moments that if they had happened differently, we can’t help thinking, might have produced a different result.

11. 2 Midtown Restaurants Seek to Incorporate Shipping Containers -

The Broad Avenue Arts District has long been innovative when it comes to the creative reuse of formerly blighted properties, and its newest addition seeks to continue this trend.

The owners of City & State on Broad Avenue filed paperwork with the city of Memphis requesting approval to convert an abandoned liquor store into a diner – fittingly named The Liquor Store – that will serve breakfast, lunch and dinner.

12. Clayborn Temple Restoration Approaches One-Year Mark -

Box lunches and stained glass were the order of the day as developers of Clayborn Temple hosted the Rotary Club last month at the landmark Downtown church.

It was one in a series of events Frank Smith and Rob Thompson have hosted at the AME Church since they reopened its doors last October to explore uses for it and start a fuller renovation in time for the 50th anniversary of the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in the spring of 2018.

13. Clayborn Reborn Effort Charts Different Pre-vitalization Path -

The hope has been that the redevelopment of Central Station in the South Main area would cause a ripple in development to the east and link up with the sprawling South City development that encompasses the Foote Homes public housing development, the area south of FedExForum, and go south of Crump Boulevard.

14. City Council Pot Ordinance Passes Its First Reading -

The Memphis City Council is one step closer to decriminalizing small amounts of marijuana, passing an ordinance on its first of three readings at the body’s Tuesday, Sept. 6, meeting.

Councilman Berlin Boyd is the sponsor of the ordinance, which would allow Memphis police the option of writing a ticket with a $50 fine for possession of less than a half-ounce of marijuana. Boyd has amended the ruling to increase fines for multiple offenders and exempt juveniles from its provisions.

19. Concerts, Pop-Up Events and Beer Gardens Are Feeding Business at The TapBox -

A traveling beer-mobile with a variety of taps on the side for easy pouring might sound like a dream straight from Homer Simpson’s head, but partners McCauley Williams, J.R. Kingsley and Justin Brooks of The TapBox have turned that dream into a reality, creating several multi-tap refrigerated devices that are popping up at more events across Memphis.

20. Last Word: $60 Million, Frozen Graceland and Wreck It Ralph's Return -

The federal government’s problem with a law the Tennessee Legislature passed earlier this year is serious -- $60-million serious.

And Tennessee Gov. Bill Haslam, in Hickory Hill Thursday, said he’s working on a compromise that would have the Legislature undo what it did this year when the new legislative session begins in January.

21. Last Word: The Wiseacre Deal, City Hall Goes To Pot and TEDx Memphis -

That was quick. Less than a week to come up with lease terms between the city and Wiseacre Brewing for the Mid-South Coliseum including a due diligence period that is the first order of business.

22. City Council Approves Wiseacre's Coliseum Plan -

Memphis City Council members approved Tuesday, Aug. 23, with an 11-0 vote a resolution setting forth a plan for Wiseacre Brewing Co. to lease the Mid-South Coliseum.

23. Last Word: Busy Council Day, Crosstown High and Local Democratic Post Mortem -

There aren’t any terms yet. But it would appear that there is enough common ground between the owners of Wiseacre Brewing and the administration of Memphis Mayor Jim Strickland to take what amounts to a letter of intent on the Mid-South Coliseum to the City Council Tuesday.

24. Coliseum, Residency Rules Top City Council Day -

Memphis City Council members talk about possible lease terms for the Mid-South Coliseum Tuesday, Aug. 23, during their executive session.

The item – “discussion of Coliseum lease terms” – was added to the committee session agenda on Monday. It comes two weeks after the owners of Wiseacre Brewing Co. outlined to council members a general concept of moving the brewery into the Coliseum and greatly expanding their operations.

The first order of business is to figure out what the city and the owners of Wiseacre Brewing Co. are negotiating about when it comes to Wiseacre’s proposal to convert the Mid-South Coliseum into a brewery.

26. Grant Touts Ghost River Brewing as Neighborhood Asset -

The Center City Development Corp. has awarded its largest storefront improvement grant to date to Ghost River Brewing Co., which plans to use the $65,500 to building an outside patio and taproom at its 827 S. Main St. facility.

Ghost River Brewing Co. is adding to its South Main presence with a planned taproom to launch this October.

This weekend, volunteers will return to the Tennessee Brewery property to continue getting it ready for Tennessee Brewery Untapped, a six-week series of community events that will run April 24 through June 1.

43. Tenn. Brewery Announces New Partners, Beer Sales -

The Tennessee Brewery Untapped project’s organizers have been granted a license to sell beer during the event by the Memphis Alcohol Commission.

In keeping with the local nature of the event, locally made craft beer will be available during Untapped from participants including High Cotton Brewing Co., Ghost River Brewing, Wiseacre Brewing and Memphis Made Brewing.

Dixon Gallery and Gardens will host its annual Art on Tap event for the 18th consecutive year on Friday, Sept. 6. The beer-tasting extravaganza will feature offerings from local breweries and eateries, as well as live music and other entertainment.

49. Wiseacre Set to Open City’s First Taproom -

The city’s newest craft brewery will be officially open for business at the end of the week.

Wiseacre Brewing Co. held a ribbon-cutting ceremony Wednesday, Aug. 28, for its 13,000-square-foot brewery at 2783 Broad Ave., and the fledgling brewery will unveil its taproom and some of its craft beers to the public Friday, Aug. 30, from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m.

A ribbon-cutting ceremony set for Wednesday morning at Wiseacre Brewing Co. is about a business vision coming to fruition – but also something more.

A new craft brewery is coming to one of Memphis’ up-and-coming areas – the Broad Avenue Historic District.

Wiseacre Brewing Co., a concept from brothers Kellan Bartosch and Davin Bartosch, has leased 13,000 square feet at 2783 Broad Ave. and is planning to open by late 2013. They chose the old warehouse for its “big open space” and the Binghampton neighborhood for its community appeal.
