Amid public opposition, Memphis Wrecking Co. has withdrawn its application to expand its landfill near Whitney Elementary School in Frayser. This is the second consecutive time the company withdrawn its application with the Land Use Control Board before the board could consider the request.

4. SRVS' Saulsberry Honored for Her Work -

Wendy Saulsberry is one of two recipients of the 2016 Direct Support Professional of the Year for Tennessee by the American Network of Community Options and Resources. Saulsberry is a direct support professional for SRVS, a United Way agency that supports more than 1,200 children and adults with disabilities.
Saulsberry says that as a DSP, she is deeply committed to the well-being of SRVS clients, assists them with their daily activities and advocates on behalf of their interests.

Alright, Memphis, it’s time to get this week started with our roundup of happenings you need to know about. 

The 2016 Memphis In May International Festival closes out Saturday with a pair of new additions to the monthlong lineup.
The Saturday by the river begins with the Great American River Run – a half-marathon and a 5K run with a riverside and Downtown route. There is, of course, a post-race party, which then segues into 901Fest – four stages in Tom Lee Park featuring local music and arts, from Al Kapone and Frayser Boy to the North Mississippi Allstars to Opera Memphis and the New Ballet Ensemble & School.
The idea here, and it may be an evolving concept, seems to be local and diverse and not as much of an emphasis on the stages and what happens there at the expense of those who stay after the run and those who come for the music and the arts.
To dot the I on that point, 901Fest also includes an air show.

Memphis City Council members vote Tuesday, Nov. 17, on Elvis Presley Enterprises’ plan to redevelop Graceland Plaza into an entertainment complex.

The 46-acre complex, located on the west side of Elvis Presley Boulevard, will include two restaurants, a soundstage, new retail development and two new museums, including a car museum.

Developer Archie Willis is leaving as chairman of the Beale Street Tourism Development Authority.

Willis announced his resignation from the panel Thursday, Nov. 12, at the end of the authority’s monthly meeting, its seventh since it was created in April.

Two community development groups are the first recipients of Community Builder PILOTS, a payment-in-lieu-of-taxes incentive housed at the Memphis-Shelby County Economic Development Growth Engine.

Binghampton and Uptown are both USDA-Certified Food Deserts, and that could change with Community Builder PILOT incentives intended to attract grocery stores.

34. City Council Approves Hotel-Retail Development Near Shelby Show Place Arena -

Memphis City Council members approved Tuesday, Oct. 20, plans to develop one of the few open parcels of land along Germantown Parkway as either a hotel with retail or two retail strips.

The Germantown Market planned development by the Debra Loskovitz Spousal Trust is on the east side of Germantown Parkway, south of Timber Creek Drive next to the Shelby Show Place Arena.

The Memphis City Council votes Tuesday, Oct. 20, on a planned development that could add a hotel to the area surrounding Agricenter International.

Developers for the Debra Loskovitz Spousal Trust have two possible plans for the four-acre development, which will be located east of Germantown Parkway and south of the Shelby Farms Show Place Arena.

Two of Memphis’ prominent food deserts are on the mend with possible tax breaks to attract grocery stores.

Binghampton and Uptown are set to receive Community Builder PILOTs, a new payment-in-lieu-of-taxes incentive granted by the Memphis and Shelby County Economic Development Growth Engine.

Clayborn Temple, the home base for the sanitation worker strikes of 1968, is on its way to restoration after decades of neglect and four years on the market. Nonprofit Neighborhood Preservation Inc. is taking over what is expected to be a multimillion-dollar project to return the church to religious, educational and community uses.

The fundraising arm of St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital has acquired an old day care center site on Second Street for $587,500.

ALSAC purchased the property at 460 N. Second St., located at Second and A.W. Willis Avenue near the St. Jude campus, from Straight Arrow LLC, according to a Jan. 9 warranty deed.
