A moment of silence for Midtown Kroger if you will, now that you’ve been through the New Year’s mountain of emails etc.
Where to shop with the Midtown supermarket landmark now closed was the water-cooler question of the day for those who have had a love-hate relationship with the store.
If you are a creature of habit and your habit is that store, you’ve known it by many names – Seesel’s, Seesel’s by Albertson, Schnucks and Kroger.
And as many bad names as you called its original parking lot, you came up with some new ones for the God-forsaken parking lot and its marked pedestrian walkway to hell built on the elegant ghost of the old Trousseau shop.
The store's interior wasn’t quite “Double Indemnity” tiny – think Barbara Stanwyck in cat sunglasses talking furtively over doll-like shelves to Fred MacMurray before “My Three Sons.”
But the “super” in its version of a supermarket was the 1950s black-and-white television Superman.
When Pau Gasol – the original Gasol -- was still playing for the Grizzlies, I ran across him on a late-night grocery excursion able to shop two aisles at once peering over his own aisle to the one I was on, suddenly having that feeling that someone was watching me.
An informal and decidedly unscientific sampling Monday found the alternative sites were the Kroger at Poplar and Cleveland, Cash Saver on Madison, West Memphis WalMart (a go to destination for left of Midtowners, otherwise known as Downtowners) and “I’m still waiting for Trader Joe's."
The old Midtown Kroger has closed as the new and bigger Kroger is starting to take shape behind chain link fences with tarps and other construction barriers just west of the original store but still within earshot of the Idlewild Presbyterian Church carillon.

9. Last Word: Out With the Old, In With The River -

We end 2015 with an eye on the Mississippi River as the city marks the New Year with three major New Year’s Eve outdoor celebrations – one on Beale Street, another in the newly-awakened Overton Square and yet another in the Broad Avenue Arts District.
Two come with lots of memories of past New Year’s eves – with soon-to-be memories.
Overton Square’s comeback as a theater district has been a big story of the last two years.
But Beale Street at the end of 2015 is an institution that has also seen a lot of change in the last year with the move to a Beale Street Tourism Development Authority at year’s end.
Broad is a different story with a different context. The context is a diversified Memphis whose crowd is likely to be at least slightly more local than the mix in Overton Square and on Beale Street.
It's example could very well show us the path to a New Year's eve with public celebrations from Whitehaven to Frayser.

Orleans Place Retail Center LLC purchased the property at 1779 Kirby Parkway and 1789 Kirby Parkway from Cohen Orleans Place LLC in a Dec. 28 warranty deed.

30. Mixed-Use Midtown Market on Tap for Long-Vacant Corner -

Rumors and speculation have long run rampant about potential development at the southwest corner of Union Avenue and McLean Boulevard, one of Memphis’ busiest intersections.

Some of the speculation involved keeping the eight-story hotel, which was built in the late 1960s, as the central feature of whatever came next. In other scenarios it would be demolished.

31. This Week in Memphis History: September 4-10 -

2014: A mob of teenagers attacks and injures three people in the parking lot outside the Kroger supermarket in Poplar Plaza. Eleven juveniles are arrested by police in the next week and charged with aggravated riot and other felonies. Most are released to their parents. In East Memphis, defining a proper restaurant and entertainment district might seem to be more difficult, but in fact it’s existed all along on Brookhaven Circle. It’s just taken a few new restaurant openings to bring the neighborhood into full focus.

Germantown is in line to get an upscale steakhouse.

Nashville-based J. Alexander’s Holdings has filed a $1.6 million building permit with the city-county Office of Construction Code Enforcement for a Stoney River Steakhouse and Grill at 7515 Poplar Ave. in Germantown. The location, just west of West Street and West Farmington Road, is near the Shops of Saddle Creek.

41. East of Cleveland -

Consultants for the Memphis Area Transit Authority are exploring an extension of the Madison Avenue trolley line east of Cleveland Street to Overton Square and North Cooper Street.

It is one of seven Midtown routes the transit authority might change or enhance with a bus rapid transit concept that involves fewer stops, fewer turns off main thoroughfares and shorter travel times.

50. Drug Trafficking Indictment Targets Gang Members -

One of the leaders of a street gang banned last year from the Legends Park area has violated the “no-gang zone” court order and is now charged with drug trafficking.

Steve Nelson, an alleged leader of the Dixie Homes Murda Gang, directed the gang’s drug dealing activities from the Shelby County Jail. When he wasn’t in jail, he was arrested twice in the Legends Park area for violating the court order that bans gang activity as well as gang members from congregating in the area.

Radiant Group of Properties LLC filed an $11.4 million loan with BancorpSouth Bank on June 14 for 14 of its retail properties around Memphis and Shelby County.
