Say what you want about the kind of city Memphis is or isn’t for foodies who prefer originality to the chains and knockoffs that are so familiar a sight in suburbia. But let it be known that 2017 was another year of ascendancy for Memphis’ singular, distinctive food scene, with the constant arrival of new concepts and experiences that in turn also says something about the city that patronizes those establishments.

NEW YORK (AP) – Ruby Tuesday is being acquired for about $146 million in a deal that will take the struggling chain private.

Like other sit-down restaurant chains, the Maryville, Tennessee-based chain has lost customers to cheaper, faster and more casual places. Comparable-store sales at Ruby Tuesday have fallen for six consecutive quarters and the company has not reported a quarterly profit in two years, even as it has made tweaks its menu and made small changes, like adding salad bars, in an attempt to boost traffic.

Tennessee Taco Co., owned by Ben McLean and chef Rob Ray, is set to open Monday, Sept. 11. Located at Poplar and Holmes Road, the restaurant will feature 24 kinds of street tacos, with menu options encompassing tastes that range from a preference for beef to chicken, pork and fish.

7. Last Word: The Amazon Competition, Millington Shelters and Grizz Ownership Drama -

With a social media post Thursday morning, Memphis Mayor Jim Strickland said the city is ready to compete in a very public competition for the $5-billion second North American headquarters Amazon.com announced earlier Thursday. Some context here. The $5 billion investment by Amazon in what it calls HQ2 compares to the $9 billion St. Jude is investing in its expansion including about $1 billion in capital costs and the rest research, technology and other development costs included in what is more than a physical expansion.

22. $20M in Improvements on Tap for One Commerce -

Plans for $20 million worth of tenant improvements are coming right along at One Commerce Square.

Commercial Advisors LLC held a tenant meeting and appreciation lunch Thursday, Aug. 11 in the historic bank lobby, 40 S. With the help of one generous donation, the Shelby Residential and Vocational Services (SRVS) agency is able to address one of its most crucial needs.

Thanks in part to a nearly $150,000 grant from the Plough Foundation, the agency bought nine brand-new vans this month. The one-time grant allowed SRVS to replace outdated vans to cater to new clients.
