The first horse on the restored Memphis Grand Carousel was a “jumper” – a horse that moves up and down, as opposed to a “stander” that doesn’t move.
The white pony with a black, thick wooden mane was the first of 48 horses to be installed Tuesday, Nov. 14, as the 1909 carousel is prepared for a Dec. 2 grand opening at the Children’s Museum of Memphis.

The group Friends of the Fairgrounds got together Thursday evening at the Children’s Museum of Memphis and got the first group tour of the Grand Carousel center under construction at CMOM. This is as the museum focuses more on fundraising for the $6 million project that has already raised the money for the restoration of the carousel itself and now sets about the task of paying for the building around it including a banquet hall. By mid-summer 2017, the historic Memphis Grand Carousel will be spinning in its new home at the Children’s Museum of Memphis.
On April 27, designshop pllc garnered the necessary approvals from the Board of Adjustment to begin work on a 20,000-square-foot addition to the Midtown museum to house the carousel and event rentals. The new building on the northwest corner of the campus will connect to the existing museum and older administration building.
