17. Fresh Market Updates Memphis-Area Stores -

The Fresh Market has unveiled a new look and shopping experience at its Memphis-area stores, part of changes the brand is rolling out company-wide through 2018.

The Memphis stores were part of the early rollout, which has already seen updates to Fresh Market stores in the company’s home state of North Carolina, as well as in Boca Raton, Florida, and Columbia, South Carolina. In general, the changes include a new look inside and expanded product offerings – at the company’s store at 2145 Union Ave., for example, a baby section greets customers for the first time.

18. Corky’s Targets Millennials With Store Upgrades, UberEATS -

Corky’s BBQ is chasing a new generation of customers it wants to turn into barbecue fans.

To do that, the company is making what co-owner Barry Pelts estimates is a six-figure investment in renovations for its Memphis-area eateries. That update is already basically finished at the flagship Corky’s restaurant at 5259 Poplar Ave., which features an open floor plan, three widescreen TVs, brighter interior lighting, new booths and more.

29. New York Firm Pays $23M For 3 Memphis-Area Hotels -

AR Global Investments, a New York-based asset management firm, has purchased a trio of Germantown hotels for a combined $23 million from Austin, Texas-based Summit Hotel Properties, according to three warranty deeds filed with the Shelby County Register of Deeds on April 28.

31. Last Word: DNA Unit Trouble, 100 Years After Ell Persons and Gas Tax Hike Redux -

The suspension of Ouita Knowlton, the Memphis Police detective overseeing the MPD's DNA Unit, appears to involve more than alleged violations of police policies. The unit oversees testing and processing of all current rape kits and those left unprocessed for decades that the city is currently working its way through five years after the admission. The District Attorney General’s office is part of the investigation of Knowlton, the office confirmed Monday. There are no specifics about what is involved here. But the police investigation will go to District Attorney General Amy Weirich who will then determine if criminal laws were violated and if there is a case to be made.

Planned Parenthood Greater Memphis Region is preparing to open a second location.

The organization has finished construction on a $2.7 million health center at 835 Virginia Run Cove, near Summer Avenue and Interstate 240 in the Berclair area, and will begin seeing patients there May 1.

Primacy II, a 123,265-square-foot East Memphis office building, has a new owner thanks to a huge $17 million deal.

Nashville-based Priam Capital purchased the office building located at 6055 Primacy Parkway near the intersection Ridgway Road and Park Avenue from The Southland Companies for $16.6 million, according to a warranty deed filed with the Shelby County Register of Deeds April 11.

41. Binghampton’s Diverse Culture On Display at Kaleidoscope Festival -

With nearly 20 nationalities calling Binghampton home, the neighborhood possibly is the most culturally diverse in Memphis.

The ghost of the Luau lives on. Loeb has a new tenant for the Shops of Chickasaw Gardens called ‘Ono Poke that features Hawaiian cuisine. And the restaurant will be just about on the other side of Poplar Avenue from where the Luau used to stand with its large concrete Easter Island head, Polynesian dishes and Hawaii Five-O era architecture – not the remake, the real Five-O and the real McGarrett.

51. Former Senses Nightclub To Be Sold in Foreclosure -

The shuttered Senses nightclub on Poplar Avenue is facing foreclosure after its owners, who had planned to resurrect the once-popular nightclub, defaulted on a $1.1 million loan.

C&R Events Enterprise LLC bought the former Senses property at 2866 Poplar Ave. from Mascom Properties for $1.2 million in May 2015. The purchase included the 14,700-square-foot warehouse that housed the nightclub as well as the adjacent 134-space parking lot.

52. Last Word: Gas Tax Resurrection, More Monitoring and Germantown's $200 M Plan -

Tennessee Gov. Bill Haslam's gas tax bill emerged from the workshop effectively on Monday with a sharper cut in the state grocery tax making the complex set of gas tax hike and other tax rollbacks more than revenue neutral.

53. Atlanta Developer Files $200 Million Germantown Mixed-Use Plan -

Atlanta developers have filed an outline plan with Germantown leaders for a $200 million mixed-use town village development on the 32-acre “Arthur tract” west of the Saddle Creek South retail center.

The Memphis Cook Convention Center renovation is about to get a construction manager and soon to follow will be a price estimate – how much an upgrade to the 40-plus-year-old facility can the city get for its money.

Sometimes, a building can be as much a place as it is a statement, a testament to values and the culture of the people who occupy it.

Such is the case Triumph Bank makes about its new roughly 10,000-square-foot Commercial and Mortgage Lending Center at 5904 Ridgeway Center Parkway. It has an open layout, with teams, desks, executives and employees arrayed in basically a large circle, wrapping around the center of the space.

Cooper St. That store will close Sunday, Feb. 12, to begin the move to an 8,500-square-foot bay in Crosstown Concourse – nearly quadruple the size of its current space.

61. Union Billboard, Impasse Changes Precede Police Contract Talks -

The union representing Memphis Police officers and the city administration are just about ready to start negotiating a new contract.

The contract talks come with a lot of scenery – notably a new billboard on Poplar Avenue that is the latest in a series from the Memphis Police Association in recent years. But along with the contract negotiations, a proposal to change the city’s impasse procedure is on the horizon as well.

Almost a year after it opened, The Curb Market is closing its Cooper-Young location Sunday, Feb. 12, as it begins its move to Crosstown Concourse.

Details: In a letter that went out to its congregation over the weekend, Temple Israel announced plans to expand into the Crosstown Concourse this summer.
Officials said the new Crosstown campus won’t be a second synagogue, but will instead enhance the Temple’s community outreach programs.
“We believe that Temple will thrive in Crosstown and that you, the members, will be truly amazed by the collaboration in the years ahead,” Temple Israel president Elkan Scheidt said in the email. “Crosstown’s creativity, innovation, and social-action focus aligns seamlessly with Temple and Reform Judaism’s inclusive philosophy.”
Temple Israel formed a preliminary Crosstown committee, which included Cara Greenstein, Alex Shindler, Daniel Kiel, Meggan Kiel, Bruce Landau, Susanne Landau, Joanna Lipman, Josh Lipman, Liz Rudnick and Elton Parker to discuss the move before deciding to sign a lease for a 1,200-square-foot “Midtown Living Room” in the Concourse.
“By offering countless programming and Tikkun Olam opportunities, Temple Israel Crosstown will bring the celebrated Temple Israel spirit of 38120 to 38104,” the announcement went on to say. “It will also become a new member gateway for unaffiliated Downtown/Midtown Jews and newcomers to Memphis.”
“Tikkun Olam, Hebrew for “repairing this broken world,” expresses the fundamental Jewish idea that what we do to heal the hurt and help those who are suffering most – in our city and in this world – is what matters most to the one God who loves us all,” Rabbi Micah Greenstein, senior rabbi at Temple Israel, said.
The email outlined some of the programs Temple Israel could offer in Crosstown, such as partnerships with their Crosstown neighbors, lunch and learns, baby-and-me classes, Hebrew tutoring and Women of Reformed Judaism-Sisterhood knitting for the Manna House.
Temple Israel, which is located at 1376 E. Massey Road, was founded in 1854 as the first permanent Jewish house of worship in Tennessee and now serves 1,500 member families in the Memphis area.

Kroger has filed a building permit application with the city-county Office of Construction Code Enforcement for more renovations to its Poplar Plaza location, which includes a new Starbucks kiosk.

66. Johnson Road Park Dropped As Germantown School Site -

The Germantown Municipal Schools board has dropped the idea of building a new elementary school in Johnson Park.

Meeting Monday, Jan. 30, the board narrowed its choices to three sites. One is on the north side of Poplar Avenue between Kimbrough and Oakleigh. The second is at Forest Hill-Irene Road and Poplar Pike, and the third is a parcel of land south of that.
