4. City & State Stretches Its Reach -

The team behind the Broad Avenue coffee-and-retail concept City & State has exported it to Midtown, with an iteration that co-owner Lisa Toro describes as not quite a second location, more of a “1.5.” The cafe space inside the Memphis Brooks Museum of Art is now being managed by City & State. It’s an expansion of a partnership between the museum and Toro, who led the redesign and launch of the Brooks Museum Store in November. The museum’s cafe is now Cafe Brooks by City & State.

NEW YORK (AP) – "Sell by?" ''Display Until?" ''Best Before?" These food date labels intend to help shoppers figure out what to throw away, but they're also mixed up with deadlines for retailers as well. That causes confusion among shoppers who can't figure out what they all mean on a can of beans or a bag of pasta. As a result, shoppers discard food that is either safe or usable after the date to the tune of $29 billion a year in the U.S. alone.

The Economic Development Growth Engine for Memphis and Shelby County on Wednesday, April 19, granted tax abatements for a pair of companies with capital investment plans totaling $34 million and approved a resolution that allows the Greater Memphis Alliance for a Competitive Workforce to merge into EDGE.

13. Nucor Steel, Rice Manufacturer Seek Memphis Incentives -

Two companies have filed applications with the Economic Development Growth Engine for Memphis and Shelby County for tax incentives that would allow them to expand operations in the Mid-South.

Nucor Steel Memphis and Ebrofrost North America are both seeking PILOTs (payment-in-lieu-of-taxes) that would result in a combined investment of $34 million and 31 net new jobs, according to their respective applications.

NEW YORK (AP) – Olive Garden is defending its practice of giving customers as many breadsticks as they want, saying the policy conveys "Italian generosity."

The remark is part of a response by the chain's parent company, Darden Restaurants Inc., to a nearly 300-page criticism released by hedge fund Starboard Value last week. Starboard took Olive Garden and its management to task for a litany of issues, including its liberal distribution of breadsticks, its failure to salt the water used to boil its pasta and even the length of the asparagus it serves.

NEW YORK (AP) – Maybe there is such a thing as too many breadsticks.

In a nearly 300-page treatise on what's wrong with Olive Garden and its management, investor Starboard Value suggests the Italian restaurant chain is being reckless with its unlimited breadsticks. The hedge fund notes the chain's official policy is to bring out one breadstick per customer at a time, plus an extra for the table.

49. Report: SEC Investigating Trading in Heinz Deal -

NEW YORK (AP) – Federal regulators have opened an insider trading inquiry on the $23 billion acquisition of H.J. Heinz, according to a publish report.

Citing an unnamed source who was briefed on the matter, The New York Times reported Friday that the Securities and Exchange Commission is looking at "unusual trading" surrounding the deal for Heinz to be purchased by Warren Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway and 3G Capital, an investment firm that also recently bought Burger King. The report said regulators first noticed a suspicious spike in trading on Wednesday.

I think of Trefethen Vineyard, founded in the Napa Valley in 1973, as an old-school Winery. Vicki Newsum-Hall and her husband, Ernest “Tony” Hall, certainly had the desire, they got the nerve, they had a concept, they found the location and somehow the money and – not least by any means – a chef named Xena Lovelady, and they opened Evelyn & Olive Restaurant and Wine Bar on Jan. 9 at 630 Madison Ave., a rather lonely stretch of Madison between Downtown and the Medical Center.

56. Take a Ride With ‘Biker’ Zinfandel -

A wine nicknamed “Biker” would probably conjure the idea of a burly, bearded guy wearing motorcycle colors, midnight black shades and an old German army helmet astride a powerful Harley, hurtling down the highway in a roar of power and arrogance. The Four Vines “Biker” Zinfandel 2009, Paso Robles, however, while being fairly burly, does not come across as a two-fisted, no-holds-barred blockbuster. In fact, there’s a certain paradoxical sense of balance and decorum about the wine, though it is undeniably forthright and flavorful.

If you drink a wide range of wines, you probably know the names of most of the important grapes. I mean, you don’t have to take a wine class or even read a book to remember chardonnay, chenin blanc, pinot grigio and sauvignon blanc; cabernet sauvignon, merlot, pinot noir, syrah, zinfandel.

The small production wines of Cimerone Vineyards are available in limited quantities in a few states and by mail order only in California, and the winery does not offer a tasting-room. Pretty exclusive stuff, but because of a friendship between owners Roger and Priscilla Higgins and a local wine retailer, some cases of the Cimerone wines can be found in Memphis.

WASHINGTON (AP) – Who needs leafy greens and carrots when pizza and french fries will do?

In an effort many 9-year-olds will cheer, Congress wants pizza and french fries to stay on school lunch lines and is fighting the Obama administration's efforts to take unhealthy foods out of schools.

60. As Temps Dip, Try Hearty Wine Like Allegrini -

Here’s a great Italian red wine to start off November and a season whose growing chill dictates hearty flavors and long-braised dishes. This is the Allegrini Valpolicella 2009, a blend of 65 percent corvina grapes, 30 percent rondinella and five percent molinara, in other words, a classic Valpolicella from that area northwest of the charming city of Verona.

A quality one doesn’t find often in chefs is modesty. We’ve all dined at restaurants where the primary ingredient is the chef’s ego, served with side-dishes of arrogance and hubris.

Fortunato Oliva, on the other hand, is happy to admit the debt he owes to his family – especially his grandmother, mother and aunt – and to the mentors he worked with since he was 16 years old, that is, for half his life.

It’s safe to say that it’s been a banner year for Downtown’s dining options. Within the past 12 months or so, restaurant openings have included Thai Bistro and The Brass Door on Madison Avenue; City Market, Krispy Krunchy Chicken and the Green Beetle on Main Street; and Rizzos Diner on G.E. Patterson Avenue, to name a few.

64. Examining the Current Dining Landscape -

So, where was I?

Oh, right, I was writing about the now-closed restaurant M. Wells in Long Island City, Queens, N.Y., and the completely different approaches taken by two reviewers of the briefly wildly popular place – it closed after a year because of a rent dispute – Sam Sifton of The New York Times and Alan Richman of GQ. Why bother, since my readers and I live in the Mid-South? Because, to my mind, the controversy brings up issues that relate to how we dine out in a rapidly changing world.

65. Venture Off Kid’s Menu Every Once in a While -

So, you’re in the restaurant, the family and the kids. Everybody is behaving well, speaking in “inside voices,” including the adults. So far, so good, but the point is, what is everybody going to eat? The kids take one peek at the menu and look as if they’re beginning to tune up: “Mom, Dad, we hate tilapia with Southwestern succotash and mango-jicama relish!” Mom says, hopefully, “Look, Dick, look, Jane, there’s a kid’s menu! You love kid’s menus!” Signaling the helpful waiter for another martini.

66. Lively Muscat Boasts Alluring Bouquet, Taste -

The alternatives to the ubiquitous chardonnay, sauvignon blanc and pinot grigio continue to expand as wine made from once unfamiliar grapes from Italy, Spain, Portugal, Eastern Europe and South America reach our shores. Albariño and verdelho, vermentino and falanghina, furmint and grüner veltiner and torrontès all help to ease the boredom our palates feel from a steady diet of The Chard, S.B. and P.G.

67. Is ‘No Children Allowed’ Policy Right or Wrong? -

In July, Mike Vuick, owner of the Pittsburgh-area restaurant McDain’s, banned children younger than 6 from his establishment. More than 2,000 email responses to this action ran 11 to 1 in favor of the ban.

68. Chef Back at Ciao Bella as Restaurant Turns 10 -

It turns out that you can go home again; at least Jonathan Steenerson did. The original chef at Ciao Bella when that salad, pasta and pizza restaurant opened in November 2001, next to Kroger in Mendenhall Commons, Steenerson is back as executive chef of the Ciao Bella that moved a few blocks west in November 2007 to the Erin Way Shopping Center and much larger digs.

69. Southern Belle Restaurant Opens on Madison -

Southern Belle: Take-Out Hot Lunch and Catering has recently opened at 1329 Madison Ave.

Owner and chef David Johnson is serving hot Southern plate lunches Monday through Friday 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Menu items include blackened chicken pasta and crawfish etouffee over rice. All food is served as take-out, but seating is available for customers who prefer sit-down service. The restaurant will begin offering delivery services this month.

Downtown Memphis has landed another corporate headquarters. CrescoAg LLC, an independent information management company, has signed a new lease on 4,594 square feet at 88 Union Ave.

It looks like Kraft Macaroni & Cheese, and Kraft says it tastes just like the original. But a new ingredient is lurking inside this version of the American family dinner staple — cauliflower.

72. Restaurant Obligations: Meeting Patron Requests -

A friend of mine comes to Memphis from the West Coast once or twice a year, and we have dinner together. We’ve been doing this since 1987. He’s very particular about what he eats, basically asking for the same thing no matter where we dine: steamed or poached salmon, steamed vegetables (whatever is on hand) and a bowl of lemon wedges. No sauce or embellishment of any kind.

According to a study commissioned in 2008 by Vegetarian Times, 3.2 percent of Americans – about 7.3 million people – follow a vegetarian-based diet. About 1 million of those people are vegan, meaning that they avoid eating not only animals but animal products. Another 10 percent, about 22.8 million, said that they “largely follow a vegetarian-inclined diet.”

Several months later, in Memphis, I encountered other wines from this historic estate as well as having the opportunity to chat with Alberto Cisa Asinari di Gresy, as charming and unassuming a personage as one could wish to meet or desire to emulate. His is the kind of family that can say, “Oh yes, we’ve owned that vineyard since 1797.”
