Authorities in southwestern Mississippi say they found a dogfighting operation with about three dozen pit bulls, some that were chained to trees and some that were mutilated.

3. Medical District Stakeholders: Neighborhood Full of Potential -

Some 2,500 new employees start jobs each year at employers in the Memphis Medical District, and about 1,300 new students each year start hitting the books at educational institutions there, too.

That’s according to Medical District Collaborative president Tommy Pacello, who says the 2.5-square-mile area between Midtown and Downtown that’s home to eight anchor institutions is full of untapped potential. So much so that his organization, which launched earlier this year, is leading a revitalization of the district that leans heavily on anchors like Regional One Health and Methodist Le Bonheur Healthcare to help in a buy local, live local and hire local push for the neighborhood.

4. Bolding is Only Tennessean to Teach at 2015 NeighborWorks Institute -

Tim Bolding, executive director of United Housing Inc., is the only Tennessean selected to teach at NeighborWorks America’s 2015 NeighborWorks Training Institute. Bolding has taught coursework at the training institutes, which focus on providing high-quality training to nonprofit housing professionals, for more than 10 years.

5. What Better Place for an NRA Convention? -

When the National Rifle Association announced that it would hold its 2015 convention in Nashville, the timing was propitious.

In 2010, gun sales and handgun permits were booming, and Tennessee had just enacted a controversial and contested new “guns in bars” law that allowed people with handgun permits to carry concealed firearms into bars and restaurants that serve alcohol.

An affiliate of Thomasville, Ga.-based Flowers Foods Inc. has paid $1.8 million for the former Hostess Wonder Bread bakery at 400 Monroe Ave. Downtown.

THOMASVILLE, Ga. (AP) – Flowers Foods Inc. has completed its $355 million acquisition of several breads, bakeries and other assets from the company previously known as Hostess Brands.

9. MLGW to Hold Neighborhood Conference -

Memphis Light, Gas and Water Division will host a conference for neighborhood leaders Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

The conference is designed to help build stronger neighborhoods. It will address how communities can prepare for an aging population, create arts programs and enrichment centers for youth, collaborate and strengthen communities, finance energy-efficient home improvements and obtain reverse mortgages.
