NEW YORK (AP) — A bronze statue of a 19th century doctor who did experimental surgery without anesthesia on enslaved African-American women was removed from Central Park on Tuesday.

New York City's Public Design Commission voted Monday to accept a mayoral panel's recommendation to remove the statue of Dr. J. Marion Sims for relocation to Brooklyn's Green-Wood Cemetery, where Sims is buried, accompanied by signage with historical context.

10. Fred’s, Nielsen Expand Data Analytics Relationship -

Memphis-based Fred’s Pharmacy and Nielsen announced Monday, June 26, they have expanded their long-term relationship with the renewal of data insights and analytics services.

Nielsen will become the exclusive account-level data provider for Fred’s Pharmacy, covering metrics for all 601 fred’s stores in 15 states across the southeastern U.S., as well as future stores within the health and wellness marketplace.

NEW YORK (AP) – Americans are turning away from live TV on the tube and tuning in to streaming services, a Nielsen report says.

That's bad news for cable and satellite TV providers. Americans are increasingly watching TV shows and movies on Netflix, Hulu, Amazon streaming and other services. CBS and HBO have announced standalone streaming services as well.

31. Nielsen Says ABC News Didn’t Win in Ratings -

The Nielsen company says ABC’s evening newscast did not break a 263-week winning streak by its rivals at NBC, which had been reported last week.

News ratings for the week beginning Sept. 29 were affected by a software error that created miscalculations of television viewership dating back to last March. Industry officials said the error meant ABC’s viewership was consistently overestimated.

32. Nielsen Admits to Errors in TV Measurement -

The Nielsen company says they have discovered errors in their measurement of television viewing that incorrectly showed people were watching one network when in fact they were tuned in to another.

The company said it is investigating a software error that has been producing faulty data since March, but only became apparent in the past few weeks.

35. Study: Media Everywhere, Bathroom Included -

LOS ANGELES (AP) – TV viewers increasingly are watching programs on their own schedule, according to a Nielsen company media study released Monday.

In the past year, time-shifting of television content grew by almost two hours, averaging 13 hours per month, the study found. Viewers averaged nearly 134 hours of live TV viewing a month in 2013, down nearly three hours from 2012.

ServiceMaster CEO Robert Gillette has named Susan Hunsberger as the Memphis-based company’s new senior vice president of human resources.

Hunsberger comes to ServiceMaster from being head of human resources for the global business solutions group of Nielsen, the Connecticut-based information and data company best known for its television ratings.

A whopping 70 percent of consumers globally report trusting online reviews from strangers when making purchase decisions, according to Nielsen’s most recent Global Trust in Advertising study. In fact, four out of five consumers say they reverse their purchase decisions based on negative online reviews, according to a Cone study of online trends.

47. US Album Sales Rise for First Time Since 2004 -

LOS ANGELES (AP) – U.S. album sales rose more than 3 percent last year for the first gain since 2004 – a sign that rising digital sales are finally stemming the decade-long decline of compact discs.

48. In Up and Down Year for Cable News, Fox Dominates -

NEW YORK (AP) – It was a good year in the ratings for cable news networks. Or a rough one. It depends on your perspective.

Fox News Channel continued its dominance, with an average viewership that exceeded CNN and MSNBC combined in prime time and for the entire day, the Nielsen ratings company said Wednesday. Fox typically had 1.87 million viewers in prime time this year. The top 13 programs in cable news all aired on Fox.

49. iPads Become Child's Play -

NEW YORK (AP) – Make room in the toy box for the iPad.

Crayola allows tots to doodle on the iPad using its iMarker just as they would a crayon on a coloring book. Tweens are able to belt out their favorite Miley Cyrus and Selena Gomez tunes on a Disney microphone that turns the tablet into a karaoke machine. And technology accessories company Griffin enables teens to fly its toy helicopter by using the iPhone as a remote control.

50. Universal, Sony/ATV to Buy EMI for $4.1 Billion -

LOS ANGELES (AP) – EMI Group Ltd., the iconic British music company that is home to The Beatles, Coldplay and Katy Perry, is being split and sold for $4.1 billion.

The deal will open EMI's buyers, Universal Music and Sony/ATV, to regulatory scrutiny as they increase their dominance of the music industry.

51. US Home Builders Remain Pessimistic in August -

WASHINGTON (AP) – U.S. homebuilders are just as pessimistic about the depressed housing market as they were two years ago.

The National Association of Home Builders said Monday that its index of builder sentiment in August was unchanged at 15. The index has been below 20 for all but one month during the past two years.

52. Consumer Confidence Rises in July -

NEW YORK (AP) — Two years into the recovery, Americans' confidence in the economy continues its rollercoaster ride.

As their short-term outlook on jobs and income eased somewhat amid a mix of optimistic and bad economic news, U.S. consumers' confidence rose slightly to 59.5 in July, according to a survey released Tuesday by a private research group.

NEW YORK (AP) — Consumer confidence fell to a seven-month low in June on continuing worries about high unemployment and stagnating wages, following a string of bad news that threatens the painfully slow U.S. economic recovery.

54. US Builders' Outlook Falls Amid Weakening Sales -

WASHINGTON (AP) – The outlook among homebuilders has been grim all year. This month, it became grimmer.

An index that measures builders' sentiment for their industry fell three points in June to 13, the National Association of Home Builders said Wednesday. That's the lowest level in nine months. And it's just five points above the lowest reading on record, in January 2009. That's when the home market was absorbing the brunt of the housing bust.

55. Consumer Confidence Index Rises in April -

NEW YORK (AP) – Americans' confidence in the economy grew in April as fears about the job market eased, outweighing the pain from rising prices at the gas pump.

The increase comes after an unexpected drop in March. But the measure had risen for five consecutive months before that to hit a three-year high in February.

56. Inflation Worries Push Consumer Confidence Lower -

NEW YORK (AP) – Rising prices at the gas pump and in grocery aisles are starting to crimp shoppers' outlook.

The Conference Board's Consumer Confidence Index fell sharply from a three-year high in February, reversing five straight months of improvement.

You don't hear that much anymore.

The median age for viewers at those networks and CBS is now 51. The broadcasters' audience has aged at twice the rate of the general population during the past two decades, according to a new report. It's a quiet trend with a real impact on the way they do business.

63. AMA Wary of Obama Call for Public Health Insurance -

CHICAGO (AP) - The nation's largest doctors group isn't sold on President Barack Obama's call for a public health plan and could be a hurdle to his reform efforts.

Dr. Nancy Nielsen says the American Medical Association has "major concerns about government control over health care decisions." Nielsen is president of the AMA, which Obama will address on Monday.

64. Gannett 's July Revenue Slides 12.3 Percent -

NEW YORK (AP) - Gannett Co.'s July revenue fell 12.3 percent as retailers cut back on ad spending and classified ads continued to shrink, the largest U.S. newspaper publisher said Friday.

For the month ended Aug. 3, the McLean, Va.-based company, which publishes USA Today, said revenue fell to $546.4 million from $622.9 million a year ago.

WASHINGTON (AP) - The Federal Trade Commission has warned more than 200 companies about "potentially deceptive" mortgage advertisements that could give borrowers a false impression of the cost of home loans.

     Rogers previously was a news director at WAFF-TV, Raycom Media's station in Huntsville, Ala.

67. WMC TV General Manager Brings Award-Winning Broadcast Journalism to New Role -

Lee Meredith comes across as sincere, generous and hard-working. He's also the new vice president and general manager of WMC TV-5.

Meredith started his new job in late August after Howard Meagle resigned the post for personal reasons. Meredith had worked in a similar position at WAFF TV in Huntsville, Ala., since 2001.
