Despite a growing trend of major businesses relocating Downtown, the East submarket still led the way by a large margin in office leasing volume in the third quarter.

In total, the Memphis office market absorbed 156,280 square feet of space, which marks the third consecutive quarter of positive absorption, according to Cushman & Wakefield/Commercial Advisors’ Q3 Office MarketBeat report. This brings the year-to-date net absorption to 625,707 square feet, a drastic increase from the negative 59,344 square feet absorbed in the first three quarters a year ago.

Atlanta-based developer IDI Gazeley appears to be planning a large-scale commercial warehouse less than two miles from the Memphis International Airport.

Located at 3292 Holmes Road, near the intersection of Holmes and Tchulahoma roads, IDI has already began moving dirt on the 139-acre site to prepare for a new commercial warehouse facility. The property is currently being marketed by Scott Pahlow with the commercial real estate advisory firm Newmark Knight Frank.

The Economic Development Growth Engine board has approved Loeb Properties' request for a 15-year tax abatement to build a 100-room boutique hotel near Overton Square.

Despite some concerns from the EDGE board over the definition of blighted property, Loeb Properties and its partners, boutique hotel developer LRC2 Properties and hospitality management company MMI Hotel Group, were approved for the payment-in-lieu-of-taxes incentive Wednesday, Sept. 20, to help offset the construction costs of the $24 million hotel.

About two weeks after unveiling a concept plan for Memphis riverfront development, Mayor Jim Strickland’s administration has reactivated a dormant city move to redevelop the Mid-South Fairgrounds.

By the end of the year, the administration of Mayor Jim Strickland plans to have a specific enough plan for Fairgrounds redevelopment to take an application for a Tourism Development Zone to state officials for approval.

79. HealthChoice Promotes Henning To Director of Population Health -

Sarah Henning has been promoted to director of population health programs at HealthChoice. Henning previously served as manager of the department. In her new role, Henning is responsible for designing, implementing and managing population health and wellness initiatives and programs for the HealthChoice network.
She also collaborates with stakeholders to promote and support these programs and to ensure they meet the needs of the affected populations and adapt with the changing health care environment.

80. Tenn. Accounting Firms Merge, Memphis Will be HQ -

Memphis-based certified public accounting firm Brundige Payne & Co. PC is set to merge with Chattanooga-based Henderson Hutcherson & McCullough, effective Aug. 1. The combined company, to be called HHM Memphis, will move to a centrally located headquarters at Memphis’ Kirby Centre, 1755 Kirby Parkway, in October.

Ericka Milford recently joined the Greater Memphis Chamber as director of events and programming, a job in which she’s responsible for planning and executing chamber events and programs and for increasing engagement opportunities for members and the community. Milford’s new role marks her return to the chamber, where she served as events coordinator from 2007 to 2012 before taking a job with HigherVisibility.

Memphis-based Monogram Foods has tapped a woman who joined the company in 2013 to fill a newly created position of chief information officer.

Having a female executive at a company like Monogram in charge of IT is something of a rarity, according to Joan Vanness, who was promoted to the new role after joining Monogram first as senior vice president for information technology.

86. Bartlett Shopping Center Sells for Nearly $30M -

An Atlanta-based real estate investment firm has made its first purchase in the Memphis market with the acquisition of a 198,103-square-foot shopping center in the heart of Bartlett.

The Bartlett Towne Centre, located at 6005 Stage Road, was acquired by Branch Properties LLC from Houston-based real estate investment trust Weingarten Realty for $28.8 million.

89. Thomas & Betts to Invest $20.7 Million in Expansion -

Thomas & Betts plans to add 75 employees and invest $20.7 million in its headquarters relocation in Memphis and is seeking a 15-year payment-in-lieu-of-taxes (PILOT) incentive to help defray those costs.

Saturday night on Beale Street is more than a catch phrase for businesses there.

An analyst says Fred’s got cut out because of questions about the corporation’s viability to enter into what is an ambitious change of course for the company on a large scale.

Dennis Ring has joined the Peer Power Foundation as director of development. In his new role, he is responsible for spearheading and cultivating development and donor relations efforts for the 12-year-old organization, which serves more than 1,000 students using a peer-to-peer tutoring method.

96. In Midst of Changes, ArchInc Becomes Woman-Owned Biz -

The Memphis-based architecture firm formerly known as Architecture Inc. is in the midst of some major changes. The 23-year-old firm has rebranded as ArchInc; promoted Valentina Puppione Cochran to president and majority shareholder; and added preservation architect and urban designer Charles “Chooch” Pickard as a partner.
Cochran has been with ArchInc for 13 years, and her promotion makes the firm a woman-owned small business, which ArchInc says will boost the firm’s minority participation on projects.

97. RedRover Adds Will Cook As Design Architect -

RedRover Sales & Marketing has added three new employees in recent months, including design architect Will Cook, who has more than 10 years of graphic design experience and comes to RedRover from The Commercial Appeal and Savant Learning Systems. In his new role, Cook primarily designs print and web collateral for RedRover’s clients while also assisting the sales and marketing teams in other ways, including participating in sales meetings and calls.

98. Tennessee Brewery Developers Seek Incentives for Second Phase -

The developers of the Tennessee Brewery project are seeking a 20-year tax abatement to begin construction on phase two of their Downtown Memphis mixed-use development.

William Orgel, Jay Lindy and Adam Slovis, representing 495 TN Partners, have applied to the Center City Revenue Finance Corp. for a payment-in-lieu-of-taxes incentive to build an additional 130-unit, four-story building they estimate will cost around $12.3 million.

The ACE Awareness Foundation’s fourth Universal Parenting Place recently opened at Christ Community Health Services in Raleigh, with Tara Seay serving as site director/parenting coach. Seay is a licensed professional counselor–mental health service provider.
In her new role at the Raleigh UPP, she’ll provide parents and caregivers with individual therapy and give clinical insight in group therapy programs. In addition, she will develop new programs over time to cater to the needs of the population that we serve in the Raleigh area.
