When Octavia Young opened Midtown Crossing Grill in 2014, the area around what would eventually become the Crosstown Concourse was a lot different than it is now.
Though there were some agreements in place at the time, there were no guarantees that the wildly ambitious but risky project would a success, and even if it was, there was no telling how long it would take for that success to spill out into the surrounding neighborhood.

The city of Memphis dedicates I Am A Man Plaza with a ceremony and open house Thursday, April 5, from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the plaza, which is adjacent to Clayborn Temple at Hernando Street and Pontotoc Avenue. The city plaza is dedicated to the 1,300 city sanitation workers that went on strike in 1968 and includes a wall with the names of the strikers. The first weekend since the Memphis City Council vote on the Overton Park Greensward was an eventful one on the greensward.
Here is our dispatch from Saturday.
The overflow zoo parking took up more of the greensward on Sunday afternoon.
As we reported, there were some sporadic attempts at sit-ins but no arrests. The cars were directed to park around the protesters in those cases.
The effort to get zoo visitors to park on street in the neighborhood west of the zoo picked up some steam over the weekend as well.

Taking advantage of warm temperatures, patrons packed the pop-up beer garden at the recently purchased Tennessee Brewery at 495 Tennessee St. Among those milling about: Shelby County Mayor Mark Luttrell, city councilman Myron Lowery, and members of the Grizzlies’ front office.
