1. Memphis City Council Considers Surface Parking Lot at Main and Beale -

Memphis City Council members vote Tuesday, Aug. 28, on a special-use permit to turn the land on the northeast corner of South Main Street and Beale Street into a surface parking lot with landscaping.

2. Shipping Container Retail Village Coming to Medical District -

A shipping container retail village is planning to open in the Memphis Medical District in mid- to late-November as part of an effort to give entrepreneurs a creative alternative to traditional bricks and mortar.

The Memphis Air Show will be held Saturday and Sunday, May 13-14, at Memphis-Millington Airport, 8101 Hornet Ave. Gates will be open from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., with flying performances from noon to 4:30 p.m. Featured performances include the U.S. Navy Blue Angels and Leap Frogs, an Air Force F-16 Viper demonstration, the Canadian Forces Snowbirds and CF-18 Hornet demonstration teams, the Shockwave Jet Truck and more. 4. List of the 138 JC Penney Stores That are Closing -

J.C. Penney on Friday released a list of the 138 locations that will close in the coming months as part of its plan to cut costs. Most are located within malls or shopping centers. Liquidation sales will start at the closing stores on April 17, and most stores will be shut by mid-June, the company said.

6. Cordova’s Future LA Fitness Site Sells for $2.4M -

LA Fitness is one step closer to opening a Cordova location.

Insomnia Inc., the company owned by former topless-club operator Steve Cooper, sold two parcels near its former restaurant/nightclub on Fischer Steel Road to Orlando, Florida-based National Retail Properties Inc. for $2.4 million, according to a Dec. 20 warranty deed. The same day as the sale, Fitness International LLC, an affiliate of L.A. Fitness International LLC, signed a lease with National Retail Properties for the property.

7. Last Word: Tubby Time, Haslam's Veto and Africa in April's 30th Year -

It was just four weeks ago that all of this talk about change at the top of the Tiger basketball chart was put to rest. Coach Josh Pastner’s performance was reviewed by the University of Memphis administration and he was staying at least for another season. Four weeks to the day of that announcement, Pastner is the new coach at Georgia Tech and we are in the first day of the Tubby Smith era at the U of M.

13. Sounds Like a Hit for Neighbors -

For months, sounds of construction surrounded the Nashville Sounds’ sparkling new First Tennessee Park in Germantown.

The constant thump-thump-thump of pounding jackhammers competed with the irritating, high-pitched beeps of vehicles backing up. Ka-ching! Cranes lifted steel beams into place, keeping time with a syncopated thrumming of never-ending drilling. Ka-ching!

The blue banner that hung until recently at the curved building at Cooper Street and Madison Avenue and read “Returning in 2012” will soon ring true for Overton Square and its developer, Loeb Properties Inc.

News last week that the law firm Glankler Brown PLLC will vacate 39,000 square feet in One Commerce Square signaled another blow to the embattled 31-story tower, a fixture on the Memphis skyline for the past four decades.
