A confession here – I am so sports challenged that I thought UConn was a team from Alaska until I saw it spelled out.
In my defense, who associates Huskies with Connecticut?
My point is what happens next isn’t just about basketball. It’s about a change with a good track record of being emotional in the worst way.
It’s linked to how we want to be known for treating people and what they think of us as a result of that.
In those two areas, it’s never just business. It’s always personal.
Josh Pastner’s four predecessors were each very different case studies in this regard.
It could have been any stop in any city with a basketball court and a one-and-done star he could find and recruit to John Calipari. But he still had to hide under a blanket in the back seat of a car on the way to the airport and lie about it long after everyone knew.
Knew about the Kentucky job that is. The mess he left at the university would surface shortly thereafter.
Tic Price was two fast seasons and the proof that the Memphis job isn’t just about what happens on the court and the attendance at games.
Price was clearly excited about coming to Memphis. He clearly understood the importance and heritage of Tigers basketball and valued it. And he wasted no time at all getting lost in the Memphis that is not a part of that all encompassing world.
It was the only job Larry Finch wanted and ultimately the job he couldn’t continue to have. That after ignoring conventional wisdom as a player and coming from Melrose High to Memphis State, bringing a beloved team with him and then picking Memphis again in the ABA over the Lakers in the NBA.
None of that was considered in pushing him out the door and then naming a building after him.
Dana Kirk
wanted to be the hustler John Calipari was. He was certainly impersonal enough about it and he took the team to an era where a post-season NCAA bid was expected and is still expected to this day.
But his impersonality exacted a high cost and he paid most of that cost. Although you could argue the experience for his team that produced some legendary players also made some of them legendary casualties of his emotional distance. It didn’t allow him to go elsewhere because he never figured out that he was being underestimated just as much as the team whose needs he ignored was in the national view of college basketball.
While Calipari dodged big trouble twice, Kirk wasn’t even in Calipari’s league when it came to ducking and timing.
We are past our inferiority complex. That’s what the last NFL drive of the 1990s did for us.
But it’s not necessarily a bad thing that we see the people chosen to occupy these very public positions as a reflection to the world of who we are.

An entity operating as 266 Lofts LLC bought the Class C building at 266 S. Front St. from Southfront Partners, in care of Ted Martin, according to a March 27 warranty deed. Built in 1957, the 33,318-square-foot building is located on the east side of Main between Beale Street and Pontotoc Avenue.

The Chisca Hotel ownership group has filed a $17.3 million construction loan to renovate and redevelop the historic South Main Street property.

Main Street Apartment Partners LLC filed the construction leasehold deed of trust, assignment of leases and rents, security agreement and fixture filing July 18 through SunTrust Banks.

It’s been almost two years since Pinnacle Airlines moved more than 600 employees into the One Commerce Square building Downtown.

Hailed as a victory in the long-running battle to revive Downtown, Pinnacle’s move to the 29-story building at Union Avenue and Main Street was hailed by city, county and business leaders as a signature event that would spur more investment and development in the city’s core.

64. Lynch Looks Ahead to Chisca’s Possibilities -

When the cast of “Memphis: The Musical” opens its run at The Orpheum Theatre later this month, they will include an extra performance the afternoon of April 26.

Cast members will sing several selections at the formal opening of the redevelopment of the old Chisca hotel, the real-life setting for the story of a Memphis disc jockey that is the basis for the fictional story line.

And it’s all due to stakeholders who braved the status quo in distinguishing the southern end of the Central Business District as that funky place with an indescribable vibe.

Developers announced plans for the Sears Crosstown building, Overton Square, Hotel Chisca, James Lee House and old United Warehouse in the South Main Historic Arts District. Construction began on The Pyramid, turning it into a 220,000-square-foot mega-Bass Pro Shop Outdoor World, and Memphis in May moved into its new headquarters at 56 S. Front St., a 14,600-square-foot building that’s on the National Register of Historic Places.

That’s because it now boasts 30 colorful banners created by students of St. Louis Catholic School, under the leadership of art teacher Robin Durden. The art exhibit, “Memphis Music Icons,” pays tribute to the Hotel Chisca’s legacy of being the location where Elvis Presley was first played on Dewey Phillips’ “Red, Hot and Blue” radio show from the WHBQ studios in 1954.

Downtown’s Brinkley Plaza has sold for $7.2 million to a Canadian real estate investment firm.

Montreal-based Olymbec USA LLC, an entity of Olymbec Corporate Group, acquired the 219,557-square-foot tower at 80 Monroe Ave., its ground lease and the adjacent 300-space covered parking garage.

The unofficial name for the $30 million project linking Main Street Memphis to Broadway Street in West Memphis via a bicycle and pedestrian boardwalk on the Harahan rail bridge across the Mississippi River draws fewer questions than the title that involves the term “intermodal connector.”

There was bicycle-powered smoothie preparation, an aerial circus-style art show, Beale Street Flippers, live music outside, a disc jockey inside, and food and drinks from Downtown restaurants and suppliers.

82. Work Moves Forward on Midtown’s Chiwawa -

Plans are moving forward for Chiwawa, a Southern-inspired Mexican restaurant near Overton Square in Midtown that hopes to open this fall.

A $347,257 permit was recently filed for Chiwawa’s renovations of the two-story, 3,196-square-foot building at 2059 Madison Ave. The space housed Chicago Pizza Factory in the 1980s and has been vacant since.

83. Visionary Project -

The reversal of fate for the blighted Chisca Hotel at the intersection of South Main Street and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue, plagued by passive out-of-town ownership and environmental hazards, was set in motion during a phone call about 18 months ago.

84. Chisca Renovation Funding Approved By CCDC -

The Center City Development Corp. approved Wednesday, July 18, $2 million in city funding to redevelop the old Chisca Hotel on South Main Street as an apartment building.

Barboro Flats, a mixed-use building at 100 S. Main St., has been financed for $9.6 million.

100 South Main Partners filed a 35-year trust deed through Love Funding Corp. for the five-story building’s 92-unit apartment section and 7,000-square-foot ground-floor retail space. The building’s garage was not included in the financing, according to loan documents filed with the Shelby County Register of Deeds.

Come mid-July, local restaurateur Aldo Dean will launch Aldo’s Pizza Pies, his group’s third concept in Memphis and second in Downtown’s Central Business District.

Dean is one of three partners behind the new 3,900-square-foot restaurant on the ground floor of Henry Turley Co.’s Barboro Flats at 100 S. Main St. Adam Slovis of Slovis & Associates LLC represented Dean and his group in its seven-year lease for Aldo’s Pizza Pies.

TUPELO, Miss. (AP) – Five Tupelo groups have partnered to pay for a market analysis that will target the possibility of building an entertainment venue in the Fairpark District.

The Northeast Mississippi Daily Journal reports the Tupelo Redevelopment Agency on Monday said it has joined with the Tupelo Convention and Visitors Bureau, the Coliseum Commission, the Community Development Foundation and the Downtown Tupelo Main Street Association for the study.

After having a popular Downtown presence for more than two years, Local Gastropub has inked its second location in Overton Square.

Local Gastropub will open in the former Yosemite Sam’s at 2126 Madison Ave., at the northwest corner of Madison and North Cooper Street. The 100-year-old, 5,826-square-foot, two-story building housed Yosemite’s Sam’s for 39 years before Loeb Properties Inc. acquired the property from Faye Pannell in August for $350,000.

100. Tunica Recovery -

Two weeks after rising Mississippi River floodwaters forced a mandatory closure of all of Tunica County’s nine casinos, the area is doing its best to recoup.

Six of Tunica County’s nine casinos and resorts remain closed. Tunica County Emergency Management officials and the Mississippi Gaming Commission are currently working with all nine casino resorts in an effort to assess flood damage, begin the clean-up process and prepare for facility re-openings.
