The National Civil Rights Museum will host a discussion with the editors of “An Unseen Light: Black Struggles for Freedom in Memphis, Tennessee” Tuesday, April 17, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the museum, 450 Mulberry St. In the book, 17 scholars examine the city’s role in African-American history. The Mississippi River Commission will host a public meeting aboard the Motor Vessel Mississippi as part of its annual high-water inspection trip Tuesday, April 17, at 9 a.m. at Beale Street Landing, 251 Riverside Drive. Interested parties are invited to present views on matters affecting the water resources infrastructure needs in the region, including flood control, environmental issues, recreation and more.

8. Jobs Explosion -

Conduit Global will hire 1,000 people over the next three to five years to staff a large call center in Shelby County, the company announced Wednesday, Jan. 22.

Conduit Global president Bryce Hayes said the New York-based company will start hiring 300 immediately for the $8 million call center serving Verizon.

A telecommunications-related company will locate a major call center in Shelby County, a project that will create hundreds of new jobs.

The company, which has been operating under the code name Project Moscow, will announce the deal that will employ over 500 people on Wednesday, Jan. 22, according to sources with knowledge of the project. The unidentified company would operate the call center for one of the nation’s largest telecommunications providers, Verizon.

The North Memphis plant that began by manufacturing automobile parts and eventually produced the bodies and wings for B-25 bombers, celebrated a milestone Wednesday, May 22, with the $300 million expansion of the Kruger Inc. facility near Mud Island in Downtown.

23. Council Takes on Property Tax Hike -

Memphis Mayor A C Wharton Jr. is expected to have some budget cuts when the Memphis City Council meets in committee Tuesday, March 20, to talk about a one-time only property tax increase.

The 9 a.m. committee session at City Hall, 125 N. Main St., is to discuss whatever cuts Wharton may put on the table and the amount of the tax hike.

Recent building permits have been applied with and issued by the city-county Office of Construction Code Enforcement related to Canada-based tissue manufacturer Kruger Inc.’s development of a $316 million Memphis plant to expand its current facilities here. The permits are the latest steps for the buildout of Kruger’s development at 400 Mahannah Ave., north of Downtown. Kruger’s multimillion-dollar deal was announced in August.
