1. Mississippi Bank to Pay $146 Million to Acquire Texas Bank -

TUPELO, Miss. (AP) — A Mississippi bank will pay $146 million in stock and cash to buy a Texas bank.

Tupelo-based BancorpSouth announced Thursday that it would buy Icon Capital Corp, whose Icon Bank has seven offices and $794 million in assets in the Houston area.

The National Civil Rights Museum and the University of Memphis Benjamin L. Hooks Institute for Social Change will present “The Poverty Report: Memphis Since MLK” during a forum and panel discussion Tuesday, Feb. 27, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at NCRM, 450 Mulberry St. The report details how African-Americans and the poor have fared in Memphis and Shelby County over the past 50 years. 3. Snap's Elusive Task: Evading Facebook's Looming Shadow -

NEW YORK (AP) – Facebook has been bent on copying Snapchat ever since the social media giant tried unsuccessfully in 2013 to buy what was then an ephemeral photo-messaging app.

Now, the company behind Snapchat is bent on becoming more like its bigger rival – at least when it comes to success – by courting new users and with them, advertisers.

Those are the four companies that have applied to manage the Beale Street entertainment district.

7. Pinnacle Awards Honor Commercial Real Estate Standouts -

The local commercial real estate community gathered at the Memphis Botanic Garden Thursday, April 9, for the 14th annual Pinnacle Awards. Every year, the Memphis Area Association of Realtors Commercial Council honors its members based on their transactional volume, merit and community activity.

8. School Board Approves 10 School Closings -

The Shelby County Schools board voted Tuesday, Feb. 25, to close 10 Memphis schools with the new school year.

But the final plan approved by the board on a split vote and recommended by superintendent Dorsey Hopson gave a one-year reprieve on closing Northside High School, removed Alcy Elementary School from the list completely and keeps Riverview Middle School open but closes neighboring Riverview Elementary School to make Riverview Middle a k-8 school starting next August.

Memphis’ geography is limited to roughly 300 square miles, but its identity stretches beyond the city limits, resonating to the far corners of the globe.

The city’s brand has obvious cornerstones, such as its place in the nation’s cultural topography. Memphis attorney D. Jack Smith of the D. Jack Smith Law Firm was one of only two attorneys recently named by DirectSellingLive to its annual 2009 Power 50 list, which recognizes him as one of the Top 50 most powerful and influential professional people in the international marketing and direct selling industry. Smith was ranked No. 33 on the list, ahead of a nine-year former general counsel for Amway, who ranked No. 34, and business mogul Donald Trump.

18. Airport Makes Noise With $55M in Improvements -

Airplanes and shuttle buses aren't the only vehicles creating buzz at Memphis International Airport these days. Bulldozers and cranes have been contributing their share as well.

Memphis' airport - the world's busiest for cargo and a hub for Northwest Airlines - is in the midst of roughly $400 million in various capital improvements, ranging from easier access in and out of the facility to the construction a $55 million air traffic control tower.
