6. Technicolor, Agilent Approved for Tax Incentives -

The Economic Development Growth Engine for Memphis and Shelby County approved a pair of tax abatements Wednesday, Dec. 20, that have the potential to affect more than 1,000 jobs in the county.

The payment-in-lieu-of-taxes agreement for California-based life sciences, diagnostics and applied chemical company Agilent Technologies would create 117 new jobs, while one for a division of multimedia production and distribution giant Technicolor would retain anywhere from 158 to 916 jobs.

8. As Temps Drop, Shelby County Home Sales Continue to Rise -

As the temperatures cool, the Memphis-area housing market typically does too, but September home sales figures in Shelby County continued to outperform those of previous years.

The average home sales price in September increased 8 percent to $171,929 compared to a year ago, according to real estate information company Chandler Reports, chandlerreports.com. Germantown East’s 38139 ZIP code recorded the highest average price for the month, at $445,117.

The city started a pilot program last year to clean up blight by utilizing a 25-square-block strategy.

Due to the program’s success, the 25-square strategy is being implemented as the strategy for neighborhood improvement going forward.
