1. Inaugural Grizzlies 5K to be Held April 9 -

The inaugural Memphis Grizzlies 5K benefiting the Memphis Grizzlies Foundation is now available for registration.

Grit, grind and run with the Grizz in the first Grizzlies 5K, which tips off at 9 a.m. in front of FedExForum the morning before the Grizzlies face Steph Curry and the NBA champion Golden State Warriors. Race packet purchasers will have their choice of a terrace-level ticket to either that night’s game vs. the Warriors or to the Grizzlies’ first home game of the 2016 NBA Playoffs.

A few weeks from now, Memphians will have a chance to hear from Kimbal Musk, the brother of billionaire Tesla founder Elon Musk, about his plans for the restaurant and garden concepts he’s bringing to Memphis.

4. Germantown Mayor Hosts Inaugural CEO Roundtable -

Germantown Mayor Mike Palazzolo recently hosted a meeting of area CEOs as part of the city’s new CEO Roundtable.

Palazzolo said he recognizes “the need for the top level executives within the city of Germantown to meet peer-to-peer and discuss matters of mutual concern regarding the challenges and opportunities that face our organizations and the greater community.”

7. Memphis Meets BYU in Inaugural Miami Beach Bowl -

MIAMI (AP) – BYU and Memphis will meet for the first time in the Miami Beach Bowl at Marlins Park on Dec. 22.

Memphis (9-3) was one of three teams that finished atop the American Athletic Conference standings, and comes into the game with a six-game winning streak.

Circa 1991, one of my golf buddies uttered a sentence using irregardless. Knowing what that meant, I didn’t challenge him. I figured someone else would. I was right, and he was able (at the other person’s expense) to point out that irregardless had been admitted to a certain dictionary the previous week. And thus was now part of his vocabulary.

13. EDGE Board Holds Inaugural Meeting -

The new Economic Development Growth Engine approved its existence Wednesday, Aug. 17, while also addressing some confusing technicalities.

“The president is selected by both mayors – this seems cumbersome,” former Shelby County Commissioner and EDGE director Deidre Malone said at the organization’s inaugural meeting at City Hall. “Having worked in the private sector and for an organization with a similar structure, I think it’s very interesting.”

14. Harding's Convocation to Inaugurate New Name -

The 10th annual convocation celebration at Harding School of Theology is scheduled for Monday, Aug. 22, when area leaders are scheduled to help inaugurate the school’s name change.

Prior to July 1, the school was called Harding University Graduate School of Religion. Harding School of Theology is associated with Churches of Christ.

15. Inaugural Seminar to Focus on CRE Issues -

Despite commercial real estate’s doldrums, local brokers are seeing signs of resurgence.

Commercial real estate investments – such as malls, office buildings and industrial properties – reached $316 billion nationwide in 2010, according to Thomas Reuters. That represented a 50 percent jump from an eight-year low in 2009 of $209 billion.

16. Haslam Begins Regional Inauguration Celebrations -

NASHVILLE (AP) – Gov.-elect Bill Haslam is kicking off a statewide tour to celebrate his inaugural with people who may not be able to make it for the formal occasion in Nashville on Saturday.

17. Memphis Celebrates Inaugural Amsterdam Flight -

Fifteen years ago this month a KLM Royal Dutch Airlines MD-11 dubbed “Elvis One” arrived in Memphis after a 10-hour flight from Amsterdam.

The Greater Memphis Chamber, Memphis Convention and Visitors Bureau, Memphis-Shelby County Airport Authority, Delta Airlines and KLM Airlines will honor the occasion – it gave Memphis its first direct overseas international flight – with a 15th anniversary celebration Thursday at 10 a.m. Festivities will be held inside the ticket area of Concourse B.

Shelby County Mayor A C Wharton Jr. became Memphis mayor on Monday.

19. Harvard Professor to Receive Inaugural Lipman Award -

Dr. Eleanor Duckworth, a professor of education at the Harvard Graduate School of Education, will be awarded with the inaugural Barbara K. Lipman Award for Advances in Early Childhood Education on Nov. 13 at the Holiday Inn–University of Memphis.
