14. Last Word: After The Tom Lee Storm, Tiger Lane Changes and Crosstown Growth -

A year ago many of you were without power in the wake of a sudden and violent storm that has come to be known as the Tom Lee Storm. It is the third most powerful storm, according to Memphis Light Gas and Water Division, in terms of those without power and the damage done. It’s called the Tom Lee storm because the 1950s-era Tom Lee memorial in Tom Lee Park – the obelisk – was toppled and shattered as the obelisk fell from the base. A year later, the base that proclaims Tom Lee “a worthy Negro” remains and the obelisk is in storage.

A women’s boutique in Overton Square has refashioned itself into what will be a collective of small business vendors launching Dec. 1 and all operating from the one space.

Elmington Capital Group has submitted plans for a 71-acre senior housing, apartment and single-family development next to Shelby Farms Park. Dwell at Shelby Farms is a new $142 million development to be located on the north side of Raleigh-LaGrange Road near the intersections of Trinity and Fischer Steel roads.

Nashville-based Magnolia Capital Investments has purchased the Trustmark Centre located at 5350 Poplar Ave. from Israeli investors, Faropoint Ventures. Faropoint intends to reinvest proceeds from the sale to buy other Memphis properties.

35. Faropoint Acquires Office Portfolio for $19.3M -

Fresh off of the sale of the Trustmark Centre, Faropoint Ventures has acquired two more substantial office assets.

The Lipscomb Pitts Building, located at 2670 Union Ave. Ext.,  and Poplar Towers, located at 6263 Poplar Ave., were both purchased by the Israeli investment firm for $19.3 million using the capital they accrued from the aforementioned deal.

43. MAA Moves Forward With New Headquarters -

Memphis-based real estate investment trust MAA is moving forward with its corporate relocation to Germantown’s TraVure development.

The apartment-only REIT pulled a $7 million building permit with construction code officials to build out the fourth and fifth floors. It lists Grinder, Taber & Grinder as the contractor, developer Gill Properties as the owner and MAA as the tenant.

Memphis-based real estate investment trust MAA is moving forward with its corporate relocation to Germantown’s TraVure development by seeking a $7 million building permit to build out the fourth and fifth floors.

It’s almost like the first half of 2017 was a decade in the making, at least when it comes to commercial real estate. An Atlanta-based real estate investment firm has made its first purchase in the Memphis market with the acquisition of a 198,103-square-foot shopping center in the heart of Bartlett.

The Bartlett Towne Centre, located at 6005 Stage Road, was acquired by Branch Properties LLC from Houston-based real estate investment trust Weingarten Realty for $28.8 million.

The story of how the Overton Park Conservancy raised $1 million in two months didn’t go according to the script. It wasn’t large donors, it was a lot of contributions of $250 or less it turns out, many from people who have never been to the park, the zoo or the greensward in particular whether it’s on foot or in a car. There were donations from Puerto Rico, the District of Columbia and every state, except South Dakota.

Called the Shops of Wolflake, the Bartlett shopping center is located between St. Francis Hospital-Bartlett and the Wolfchase mall and is anchored by Eat Well Sushi and Grill.

Plans for Trader Joe’s Germantown location are changing again, and it could expedite the store’s opening.

Developer Centennial American Properties received unanimous approval from the Germantown Planning Commission Tuesday, Jan. 3, for a revised site plan that would locate Trader Joe’s within the former Kroger store at 2130 Exeter Road instead of in a new building on an outparcel of that site.
